How to Drive in Trieste

• Drivers have to be at least 18 years old to hire a car in Trieste.

• Children under 12 years old must sit in the back seats at all times.

What to see in Trieste

The Piazza Unità d’Italia is a must-visit when you’re in the city. This is the city’s main square, known for its Austro-Hungarian architecture and views over the Adriatic Sea.

For history lovers, the Castello di San Giusto is simply unmissable. It is a 15th-century castle, and from the top, you are rewarded with panoramic views over the city.

Trieste Barcola is also a nice place to walk along and experience the city’s famous coffee culture, as well as being able to swim in the sea or enjoy a walk along the seafront.

Best road trips from Trieste city

There are many road trips from Trieste, making it an ideal place from which to base yourself.

For example, Venice can be reached in around two hours, while Verona is roughly three hours away, and Bologna can be reached in around four hours, depending on traffic.

However, basing yourself in Trieste gives you the excellent opportunity to explore some of Italy’s neighbouring countries, including Slovenia, Croatia, San Marino and Austria.

Ljubljana (Slovenia) can be reached in around two hours from Trieste, while Pula (Croatia) is an hour and a half away. For those wanting to go further afield, San Marino can be reached in around five hours, as can Innsbruck (Austria).
