The question is, how can a small town of no more than 10.000 people be of interest to almost the whole world? The answer is Lego. Billund, a small town in Denmark, has the special privilege of rightfully calling itself the birthplace of the Lego Group.
Billunds existence goes back as far as the year 1200. Back 1930 there were still only about 300 residents but this started to change over the years to come with one of the main reasons for growth being the gradual expansions of Lego. Billund is a town with many families with children and one might wonder if the nearby presence of a toy factory has something to do with this. Another valid question when visiting Billund is, how do I choose the perfect car hire? The answer is Holiday Cars. There are several companies for car rental Billund Airport and Holiday Cars can find you the best car rental deals available, making it very easy to rent a car.

The birth of the Lego Group

In the beginning of the 1930’s Ole Kirk Kristiansen started a company which initially manufactured stepladders, ironing boards, stools and wooden toys. A few years later the name Lego was formed and adopted by the company. The word Lego is is a combination of two Danish words that translate to “play well”. In the following years the number of employees and products kept growing steadily while facing challenges such as the Second World War and losing the Lego factory to a fire in 1942. All this while staying true to their motto “Only the best is good enough”. Today Lego has more than 19.000 employees globally and about 20 billion elements are made every year. Here’s another interesting number according: the minifigures are the world’s biggest population group with approximately 4 billion.

Billund Airport

In 1961 Godtfred Kirk Christiansen built a private runway and hangar which was later transformed to a public airport. The opening was in november 1964 and two years later the first terminal was opened. Nowadays nearly 3 million passengers pass through the airport annually with 90% of them either coming from or going to a destination outside of Denmark which certainly gives this airport an international nature. Just as many other international airports Billund has many facilities to ensure that passengers are properly taken care of. Food & Drinks are available at both landside and airside of the airport and in the lounge you could grab a quick shower if you would like to freshen up. Not the best airport for families as they don't allow you to bring your pushchair to the door and don't deliver pushchair at the flight door. Although they provide service pushchair they are not available for arriving flights and it's difficult to juggle babies when arriving with no pushchair at flight door. This is very poorly thought through given that Billund is a family destination given legoland etc

Of course visit magical Legoland, a source of entertainment and surprises for adults and children alike, but also try canoeing on the Skjern River, from Vesterlund on Rørbæk Lake, about 3 hours' paddling downstream through a string of glacial lakes with forested shores and fields of waterlilies, to the rest stop at Hastrup. Arrange a car crew to bring a picnic there and then drive you back to Vesterlund, and the canoe company will collect the canoes. A fun adventure for a group! Another great day out is to follow the old Army Road (Hærvejen), from Nørre Snede to Jelling. Find the sources of the Skjern and Guden Rivers just 100 metres apart and flowing in opposite directions from the high ridge of Jutland. Drive along a gravel track through heather and oak scrub, between the burial mounds of Bronze Age chieftains, ending at the church in Jelling sited between the gigantic burial mounds of Gorm the Old and his wife Thyra. If you are lucky, your visit could coincide with a summer Viking festival at Jelling.
