Our family planned the entire 2+ week holiday without the assistance of a travel agent. This allowed us complete freedom in our agenda. We relied heavily on the Rick Steves Travel book on France, which was an enormous asset in our travels. We felt that Rick Steves gave accurate unbiased information on the country, travel details and sites to explore. Our advice is to plan in sufficient detail that you prebook highly sought after excursions. Make the hotel, car and airfare reservations in advance so as to procure the best pricing. Pack lightly to provide maximum mobility. Make sure and take excellent rain gear and an umbrella so that the weather does not ruin your siteseeing.

Use public transport to arrive to, and leave, the airport, whenever possible. RER is the best way to travel to/from Paris. The connection between RER and Metro is seamless. If going to or coming from a city other than Paris, many long-distance trains pass through CDG, or can be connected from it. If using the Air France lounge, the best one is in Terminal 2E gates K.

The customer service throughout this airport is outstanding. Don’t hesitate to ask questions. We had trouble with a lost bag, missed flight, and issues with our rental car and everything was resolved quickly and kindly. It could’ve been a nightmare! Travel from the airport taking the train, bus, or car is straightforward.

Make sure you have an agent check out the vehicle with you and confirm in your native language what is documented on your contract. Also, have extra fees and costs clearly highlighted when you rent through a third party since much of the language around these additions can be vague. Last, appropriate at least 1.5 hours for pick-up as many of these counters are busy and often understaffed. Have your vouchers and confirmation of insurance printed out with multiple copies which I did but still doesn't guarantee efficient service.

My best travel tip is not to shy away from travel accessories when flying. Have an empty water bottle and refill it after security, use noise-cancelling headphones, wear compression socks on long flights. Also charge your phone on the plane to be stress-free when landing. My second travel tip is to never speed on the road, triple-check street signs and fees when parking in an unknown city etc. There’s nothing worse than getting a rental car impounded on vacation (or business trip) because the parking lot turns into a market place one day per week! Last travel tip is to make room for surprise. Travel ahead of time when possible, engage in small talk with locals. Plan in advance but dare to stir away from the plan!

Always come earlier than you would anywhere else. Indications in this airport are not very good/clear (although I speak the language!). So having more time will save you useless stress.

Nice open light airport with car hire right next to terminal, plenty of shops and facilities and security is reasonably quick.

Be prepared to wait on your car. I opted not to take the navigation system at the counter. Lo and behold, the car had a great touch screen system at no additional charge.

Didn't spend any time in Paris as I travelled north to Cambrai and then south to Normandie. Be aware of the toll charges on long journeys which can end up being quite high.
