About Car Rental at Cagliari Elmas Airport

Situated in the municipality of Elmas next to Sardinia’s capital Cagliari, is the Cagliari Elmas Airport. Only four miles away from the centre of Cagliari, it is an international hub for holidaymakers, tourists, and travellers from all over the world.

The second largest island in the Mediterranean, Sardinia is a truly beautiful area to explore, and renting a car is highly recommended if you want to see all the sights it has to offer. Luckily for you, Cagliari Elmas Airport has you covered, with over twenty different world-renowned and local car rental agencies to choose from. So, whether you just want to see a few sites with minimal fuss, or you’re hoping to traverse every inch of this historic location, there is sure to be a car hire agency there with the right option for you.

Downtown Car Rental at Cagliari

You may want to get settled into your accommodation before deciding on a rental car, and this couldn’t be easier with the large range of agencies available in Cagliari City Centre. Here you can find many of the same companies that are situated at the airport, as well as a few more. We recommend doing your research and maybe even booking or paying beforehand however, as this will ensure you get exactly what it is you are looking for within the budget you have available. Not only that, but most car rental agencies will have extra deals and offers on their websites that you can’t get if you just turn up at their office on the day.

Driving in Cagliari

Driving in Cagliari and the surrounding areas of Sardinia is a wonderful experience, and one you don’t want to miss. Although the traffic can get a little heavy in the centre of the capital, as long as you avoid rush hour around more popular beaches during the summer months you will have a more than pleasant experience on the Italian roads. Outside of the centre, routes are scenic and quiet and everywhere is well connected, but despite this do make sure to read up on the local laws so that you can ensure you’re being safe and responsible whenever you’re behind the wheel.

A few helpful tips for driving in Cagliari:

Car Rental Agencies in Cagliari

It doesn’t matter whether you decide to rent a car downtown or at the airport. Either way, you are guaranteed great service from one of the many agencies available to you. There are so many to choose from, with big names like Hertz, Budget, and AVIS, or more local options, such as Ruvioli Rent a Car, Matta Rent a Car and Autonoleggio Pintauro. If you are unsure about which one to go for, do some research beforehand and see what each agency has to offer. Many have plenty of additional benefits like second named drivers, breakdown cover, and extras such as child seats and first aid kits too.

If you still aren’t sure, we would definitely recommend choosing Autonoleggio Pintauro. A local car rental agency, they will be able to not only provide you excellent service and a whole range of fantastic vehicles to choose from, but an insider’s knowledge into the land and what there is to see and do in Cagliari.

Top Road Trips from Cagliari

Cagliari is a stunning place full of an impressive mix of both modern and historic culture, but don’t forget to set some time aside for exploring some other parts of Sardinia too. It’s a beautiful island, and you wouldn’t want to miss out.

If you’re a fan of beautiful landscapes and awe-inspiring ancient architecture, the small town of Olbia is a must-see. It is full of a breath-taking number of timeworn structures, such as an 11th century cathedral, Roman and Carthaginian ruins, and much more.

Or, if you’re an adventure lover, take a trip out to the Gulf of Orosei, where you can explore the famous Bue Marino Caves. Arguably one of the most beautiful places in Sardinia, you can also go snorkelling, rock climbing and hiking around this treasure trove of natural beauty.

nice airport with lots of shops and restaurants, departures upstairs with bag drop in desk not very clearly marked so it can be bit confusing, no issues with anything at all, good experience

Allow plenty of time to get round Airport. It covers quite a large area. Have water or other drink on you as queuing can take a while e.g. Passport control on entering for EU arrivals channelled though automatic passport recognition stations and there were only 2 of these installed. Some people must have been queuing for an hour or more based on when I went through. Same issue queuing for rental car. One small building with far too many people in 30 degree heat is uncomfortable. Travelling into or from Gagliari centre? Get the Train! Very modern and comfy and run around every 15 mins . Only takes a few minutes and costs €1.30 pp. Make sure you stamp your ticket at machines before getting on train. Put ticket in right side of slot then slide to the left. You'll hear it click so will know it's been done. This is not intuitive or obvious!! Not a massive range of food/drink outlets when you get through security so may want to eat before you go through. Go to far end of departure lounge for the Lowenbrau stall. They have a good choice of food and beers with tables for diners out of sight behind where you place your order. The Bavarian style sausages are delicious!! Even better with a nice cold beer!! Check the screens for info as the announcements were not too clear for me to understand. Taking my own Satnav was valuable as hire car did not have one built in but it did take me into some windy streets. Make sure your maps are up to date before you fly or use offline maps.

Cagliari airport was pretty well set up. They had buses, trains, taxis, car hire and everything is really well (bilingually) sign posted. Bear in mind that the train station is a bit of a walk from the terminal. The connections are pretty regular so we didn’t have to wait long for a train. The ticket purchasing was a bit complicated because you have to ‘validate’ the ticket and the validating machine didn’t work. There was another but a local had to try and explain that to us! We got the train into Cagliari for a few nights then popped back to pick up the car for the rest of our holiday so we got to experience two sides of the transportation options! It was pretty quiet and everything was pretty straightforward.

Arrived at a quiet time, security check area still had all the rope barriers up making everyone walk back and forth! Totally unnecessary. Think of all the elderly people please. Water fountain available was good and very smooth and efficient service

Cagliari is a charming city - big and small at the same time with a lot of beautiful historical buildings and sights. I would also recommend renting a car to experience other parts of the lovely island. It's easy to drive in Sardegna, not too much traffic at all. A stunning place to see is the waterfalls of Sa Spendula in the mountains. Also a Pula/Nora beaches and ancient ruins are worth a visit. Try the small and cozy local restaurants in the villages - great food and authentic Sardinian atmosphere.

Sella del Diavola - A must see. Park the car just after the hotel/restaurant at Calamosca, and take the footpath up to the cliffs overlooking the Devil´s Saddle - Sella del Diavola. A must see with the declining sun over the city center of beautiful Cagliari

We had a great time. We spent the first part of our holiday in SW Sardegna and drove to a lot of interesting cultural/historical/beach sites. It was great to have a car to get out and see things. We were in Cagliari without a car, which really wasn't needed at that point.
