The motorways are easy to drive on and on beautiful settings but do explore the back roads which being happy surprises. Beware of the tolls..try to make sure that you have change in the car. Taormina is a beautiful town so leave plenty of time to amble in the streets. Really worth a visit is Isola Bella which is a little haven of peace. Chat to people and hear their stories..we met many Who were happy to talk about the island and their life on it. Make sure you eat some ice Cream!

I probably would not recommend staying in Catania, but I would recommend renting Goldcar to drive around to other Sicilian towns, such as Enna and Agrigento.

Car hire was pretty essential if you wanted to explore. (Tip - Hire smallest car available and/or adjust pacemaker if you have one. Sicily is just like mainland Italy when it comes to crazy drivers!!). Don't plan to do anything too energetic between midday and 3pm as heat can be ferocious. Explore some of the fabulous beaches, if that's your thing, as there are some really great ones with crystal clear water. but be sure to hire or buy a beach sun umbrella it really is essential along with sun block. Siracusa, (home of Archimedes and his principle), is worth a visit, along with its street market as is Taormina, (use the park and ride facility if driving there) and Noto which is one of the oldest towns. Eating out was reasonable value and pretty good choice. Locals seem pretty layed back and we found them friendly and helpful. Always have some water with you try and park in the shade if you're hiring a car.

Beautiful island with interesting historic sights. It is however more part of Africa than Europe and government services, like road maintenance, rubbish collection are worse than in Nigeria. The people as friendly as Africans, luckily.
