About Car Rental at Milan Malpensa Airport

Milan Malpensa Airport is just under 49 kilometers away from Milan and the drive into the center takes around an hour, traffic depending. So, whether you’re flying to Milan Malpensa Airport for pleasure or for a business trip – we’d always recommend renting yourself a car to give you the flexibility and freedom to explore the area properly. Renting a car at Malpensa Airport is a favorite amongst tourists travelling to Milan, thanks to its convenience, reliability and competitive rates. At the airport, you will find a number of different car rental options, including:

These car hire companies are great options if you want to rent a car right away at the airport. We compare hundreds of different car rental companies, like the ones above, quickly and efficiently so you don’t have to.

However, renting a car from the airport isn’t everyone’s first choice, you can also rent a car in Milan, should you prefer.

Renting a car in Milan

If you prefer to settling into your accommodation first and don’t mind getting a taxi there from the airport, renting a car in the center might be the best option for you – and it might even save you a bit of money too. In Milan, you can find hundreds of car rental companies, but we do recommend booking well in advance – especially if you are looking to travel on a budget. At HolidayCars, we can get you the best deals out there, whether you are looking to rent a car at the airport or in the city.

Driving in Milan

The first thing to remember when driving in Italy is that they drive on the right-hand side of the road, with exceptions of overtaking and lane driving. In and around cities, there are also traffic cameras dotted along the roads to encourage people to abide by the speed limits, stop them from jumping lights and keep people safe on the roads. These cameras are not only here to make sure you are doing the right thing, but they are also here to ensure your safety on unfamiliar roads too.

As a tourist in Italy, you should keep in mind that access to the city center of Milan is limited by Area C (the congestion charge area) from Mondays to Fridays. In order to enter this area, you need to make sure you have purchased a ticket in advance, otherwise you may experience a hefty fine. If you would rather not make this payment, you could always park on the outskirts of the city and then make use of the tramlines to get yourself into the center – but you will need tickets for this too.

Car Rental Agencies in Milan

At Terminal 1 in the airport, you will find all of the car rental desks. Here, you will have your pick of a number of different car rental companies, including, as mentioned above, Europcar, Hertz and Maggiore. At the airport, you will find all of the top-rated car rental agencies in Italy, along with some of the most requested companies in the world. We always recommend renting well in advance, which is why finding the most competitive car rental agencies in Milan is one of our passions.

Top Road Trips from Milan

There are hundreds of road trips you can take from Milan – it is just a question of what you would like to get out of the trip itself. One of our favorite road trips from the city is heading to Lake Como. About 30 minutes from Milan is the small city of Como, where you will find Lake Como. From here, you can get a boat that leaves regularly everyday that stops at other lakeside towns, each with its own unique features.

Another of our favorite road trips from Milan is heading to Venice. Venice is about 2 and a half hours from Milan by car and is a must-see when visiting Italy. Many people have said that, aside from Milan, Venice is the top tourist destination in the whole of Europe – so it simply cannot be missed.

Frequently asked questions about car rental Milan Malpensa airport

What's the best area to stay in Milan?
Milan is one of Italy’s most beautiful cities, which is why you can’t go wrong wherever you decide to stay. However, we have some of our favorite spots for you. If you are looking for a convenient place to see all the sights, Centro Storico will be somewhere to consider. Centro Storico is considered to be Milan’s historic center, so you will never be short of things to do. Other places to consider are also Brera and Porta Romana.
What is the cheapest time to go to Milan?
Typically, the winter months are the cheapest times to travel to Milan – but this can vary drastically depending on what festivals are occurring during this time. Some research has also suggested that March is a cheaper time to fly to Milan, but we would always recommend comparing prices, especially if you can be flexible and go at any time of the year as you’re likely to be able to save yourself quite a bit of money.
What is the best time to go to Milan?
In our opinion, the best time to visit Milan is between April and May, or September and October. In Italy, these are the spring and fall months and are typically less busy and not as hot – meaning you can enjoy your time in Milan, without the hustle and bustle of tourists and at a comfortable temperature too.
Can you get around Milan without a car?
Italy has an incredible network of public travel – from trams, to trains, to buses. It is quite easy to travel in and around Milan without a car. However, for ease of travel, we would recommend getting yourself a set of wheels. Not only will having a car give you the freedom and flexibility you need – but it will also help you to see a lot more of the surrounding areas too.

Airport is quite large, so check maps when trying to get to car rental. There are a number of car rentals within walking distance of the airport, check in advance. Make sure to have printed copies of all documents, a lot is still done using hard copies at the airport. Check-in and security are quite efficient. Large on-site hotel at the airport if needed. Food offering at the airport is better after you pass through security.

The train to Milan for a short visit is good value. The mountain passes to Switzerland and back - especially the Splugen are out of this world. Bellinzona is a delightful town and we found a great Air B&B. Lake Como and Lecco were beautiful on a calm evening. Even the mortorway tolls are cheap and easy to pay on line. And the airline fare from Liverpool UK is only a headline E25! What's not to like!

If You are driving a car alone - please investigate also other traveling options like bus (FLixiBus or other company) or train. When travelling by the highways- it is not so cheap: from Milan Malpensa to Bolcano with return it cost for me additionally ~70EUR. So total rent for 6 days cost me: ~40EUR car + 40EUR insurance (optional)+15 SicilyByCar tech support (optional)+ 70EUR highways + ~50 EUR petrol = ~215 EUR.

Grab some water & snack food from the airport store on arrival. If you have booked a shuttle or taxi, make a sign with your family name so the driver can find you too. Make regular refreshment stops - don't drive too long. If you need a car park, investigate parking location options before you arrive at your destination. Plan your day prior and have a back-up plan in case things change. Keep your valuables (such as wallet, phones, tablets, purse and /or passports) out of sight. Always carry some cash and separate cash and credit cards in different bags in case one bag gets stolen or you loose it. Other than that, relax and enjoy your wonderful holiday with friends and family! :)

Take into considerations that the rental stations are closed after 0.00 am in Italy. Beware traffic limitations in Italy cities and security cameras. Police is quite active in Rome - looking for parking in 2nd row. Sixt is quite loyal in terms of rental extension and city change. Be careful at autostradale exit - always pay for it even in case of system bug and have ticket on hand. Also consider full insurance - Italians are reckless drivers and parkers. Never leave luggage in your car - it is highly likely to be stolen.

When traveling in Italy. (1) Get Navigation in the car. It places the required speed limit on the odometer so you’re ready for changes. (2) Watch for narrowing road signs or symbols painted in the street (3) Stay in the middle lane on the auto strata if possible. This keeps you out of the fast lane and also away from merging traffic. (4) watch for motor cycles on smaller roads as they will pass closely and without warning (5) signal and prepare for the unexpected in advance (especially on smaller roads, traffic circles and in heavy traffic). (6) Don’t be intimidated by tailgaters. They will eventually find a way to pass. (7) Take breaks on long trips and enjoy the scenery. (8) get used to traffic circles and speed limit changes.. .they’re everywhere.

Most important is to stay positive as travel could be quiet stressful if not well prepared. It should fun for everybody. Go well prepared and have additional copies of travel documents in case of loss and a list of (emergency) contact numbers for each traveler, especially your bank and loved ones. Make sure all travelers know what action to take in case of any calamity and ensure you take sufficient time to get to the airport for returning your rental vehicle and flight check in. Lock down the GPS coordinates of the rental services prior departure of car rental terminal. Have fun.

Then Rome for 4 days with Vatican, The Coliseum, La Fontana di Trevi and The Vatican.

Arriving at MXP is usually smooth and efficient. Baggage delivery is typically quick unless it is at a very busy time. There is a good selection of coffee shops and even a mini market where you can get a few supplies before going home or to your accommodation. Always ask the car rental company for a local area map, even if you have GPS. You have to be very quick at reading the road signs if you want to get on the correct route at first attempt. Enjoy your stay and see every aspect as an adventure.

Make sure you use a car rental company that is "on site". It takes a lot of the stress out of travelling, especially when you return the vehicle. Research the best route to your final destination on the internet before leaving home and write it down....step by step. Even if you use a GPS, there is so much to think about that you should have a back up plan. We are often tired after a long flight and clear directions are a must. Use a good map to familiarize yourself with the names of towns and the general geography of the area. Sometimes signposts feature places we have never heard of....then you have no idea which one to follow!

Have an espresso on arrival at Mi Gusto! Its a wonderful way to stand at the counter and experience a great coffee in Italy. The Milan exhibition as you exit the airport is great to see as well. Make sure you add Lake Como to the list and visit Villa Carlotta. I go to Italy twice a year and always eat the gelato (have it for breakfast!) anywhere and everywhere!! A visit to the Cathedral is always a great way to crowd watch and experience the culture.

Malpensa is a good destination to fly for, as you can go to very many destinations from there. Starting Italy, France, Switzerland and even Austria and Croatia. There is a trick of how to find car pickup garages (Goldcar, Avis), so follow the signs. The same applies to the car return, as going in the wrong one will lead to at least 5 EUR (PArking cost) and extra circuit around the airport. If you choose car return on Waze its tricky and you need to check yourselves, as it drives you a bit different way, it was good that it wasn't my first time there, so it would be good if someone would make an official point in waze on car return. And my favorite part of MXP - you can have great espresso right at the gate for the Italian price, that seems like peanuts in traditional airport coffee prices.

Good thing to do when going from the airport is to get familiar with the roads and where to return the hired car. That will save time and frustration when returning to the airport. If you arrive late at night and plan to hire a car, it is good to just get a room at a hotel nearby, where there is a shuttle service. Take the shuttle to the hotel and get a good night rest and a nice breakfast in the morning. Take the shuttle back to the airport next morning and go to the car hire service. That way you are fully rested and relaxed before you go on driving in Italy. In addition, it is more enjoyable to drive during the day ;-)
