About Car Rental at Cancun Airport

A taste of Mexican paradise, Cancun is a city that brings ancient culture and contemporary comforts together in an exciting and vibrant mash up. Situated on the northeast coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, it boasts of white sands and turquoise seas, rich, Mayan history, colourful natural sights, and an electric nightlife. It is arguably the tourist destination of Mexico, and with hundreds of people flocking to enjoy the long list of things to see and do here, it isn’t hard to see why. So, whether you’re looking to soak up some culture in the Underwater Museum of Art, explore the array of ancient Maya archaeological sites, or you want to seek the thrills of swimming with whale sharks and go wind-surfing on the Caribbean waves, your trip to Cancun is guaranteed to be full of sea, sun, and adventures to last a lifetime.

Cancun International Airport (CUN) is one of the busiest airports in the Caribbean, located just outside the city of Cancun at kilometre 22 of the Cancun-Chetumal highway. It is one of the most convenient and therefore most popular airports when travelling to and from Mexico. Because of this it has an increasing number of visitors, and the airport is continuously growing and adding new services to accommodate its new passengers, with plenty of facilities and amenities that rival major international airports all over the world. You can find the car rental agency counters in Terminal 3 on the ground floor.

Why Consider Car Rental in Cancun?

Cancun is a lively and atmospheric city, with plenty to see and do both in and around it. To truly make the most of your time here we recommend renting a car. Not only will this enable you to set your own schedule, but it also gives you the flexibility to explore more than just the surroundings of your hotel and the inner city. Although packed full of fantastic attractions and activities within walking distance, the Hotel Zone can be expensive, crowded, and tends to have a wider variety of chain restaurants and shops. By renting a car you will be able to step outside of this area as and when you want to explore some of the more local culture, with the opportunity to discover authentic Mexican markets and cuisine instead.

But, make sure you pay attention to the rules of the road and do your research before stepping on the pedal to ensure the safety of yourself and others around you.

Top Road Trips from Cancun

There is an abundance of things to see and do in Cancun, but it is worth noting that the city is close to many incredible places that, if possible, should be added to your list of things to do whilst visiting the area. With locations like Isla Mujeres, Playa del Carmen, and the former Mayan city of Coba all within driving distance, fitting a road trip or two into your holiday would be an easy way to explore even more of the beautiful southeast area of Mexico.

Or, for a chance to connect with the beautiful Caribbean nature, take a trip to the Tortugranja (Turtle Farm) on Isla Mujeres, which is a site dedicated to the protection, research, and conservation of turtles.

Be sure about what insurance you have and what you need. All car hire companies in Cancun push hard to sell additional insurance, often unneeded. If you're sure that you are already covered, be firm and don't take extra (but be sure). Book ahead to avoid disappointment. In Playa, look out for potholes in the road - they're everywhere, especially after heavy rain! Be careful when you pay for gas and try to give the exact money - giving the wrong change is rare but happens around the Playa area.

make sure you know which terminal you are exiting from as some rental offices are only on one side of the airport (although they usually provide shuttles). taxis are an absolute rip off anywhere around the airport

Do your research planning holiday itinerary to make the most of it. Pack light. Buy a local SIM for your phone. Use Uber, Citymapper, Visitacity, Monzo, AirBnb apps. Take a good book. Do a holiday blog.

Make sure you pay upfront for rental as this leaves no wiggle room for the car companies to change the rental rules. Did not do so recently and walked into quite a lot of argument when picking up a car from Eurocars. Will never hire from them again.

Rent from Hertz. If you pan to take the toll highway, toward Mérida, be sure to have plenty of pesos to pay the toll before leaving Cancun. There are many van and affordable taxi services to consider before renting a car. Don’t speed. Mind the frequent speed bumps. Enjoy you visit to this wonderful country.

The airport was fine. They keep it ridiculously cold. The main issue is that none of the gates are announced until an hour before the flight. We were there 3 hours early as instructed, so we were required to just sit and wait for our gate to be announced, but could not really get comfortable. We constantly had to get up to check the screen to see where our flight was leaving. Not the best way to run an airport, but really just mildly inconvenient

The international terminal 4 is brand new and really works well. Both arrivals and departures ran smoothly, little queuing, but that may well be pot luck. We were traveling with my 80 year old mother who was in a wheel chair and they really could not do enough to help her which was really refreshing vs the UK. On arrival to Mexico do have your ground transport pre booked, Cancun Shuttle worked well for us. On the spot taxis can be expensive and the otherwise excellent cancun bus service is not very apparent at the airport.

Skip the loads of people hounding you as you come out of baggage... go straight outside to find your Fire Fly rep. Make sure to hit Akumal beach and the Monkey Sanctuary there as well... Grand Cenote was beautiful! The Mezzanine Restaurant in Tulum was amazing food and a beautiful view as well!

Pay attention to your Terminal #. If you only dropping people, go to terminal, not parking. Parking is paid. I liked the new terminal. There is not Exchange on it. If you need this you have to go through police to the old terminal.

Avoid the people trying to sell anything as soon as you exit. Just walk to the exit, get on the van to pick up a car.

This regards terminal 3. The check-in and security sections are clean, fast and fairly efficient. Have a good look round in the duty free section as there are some bargains here! We went to Bubba Gump’s in the airport as we had a good night at the one on the hotel zone. This one in the airport is just as good with friendly service from the happy staff. Try to have a good look round if there is time as the various shops offer all sorts of surprises. Not just the standard gifts but really quirky items and clothing. There are dedicated disabled seating areas too. Although many able bodied people sat at them!
