What to do in Johannesburg?

Johannesburg is the capital of South-Africa, a country which is visited by lots of tourists every year. One of the main sites in Johannesburg is the ‘Apartheidsmuseum’, where there’s a lot to be seen of Nelson Mandela’s war on racism. The museum directly makes an impression at the entrance, where visitors are divided on the basis of the color of their skin. Gold Reef City is also one of the biggest tourist attractions. The roads around the airport in Jhb can be very confusing. There are plenty of signs, but it is easy to miss some of them because there is so little space and time for thought, for a driver who is not familiar with them, and driving a newly hired car. Put your luggage and bags into the boot of the car and don't put wallets, phones etc. on the dashboard or passenger seat. Road surfaces are not always especially good so take care as it is easy to add a scratch or dent to a car. The airport is a large and stunning complex, but when checking in to leave JHB airport, give yourself plenty of time, especially if travelling abroad! The international departures hall can get extremely crowded, especially in the later afternoon, and it is not very big. There a plenty of good restaurants and other shops both before and after security / passport checks, so get rid of those bags early and relax!

Easy pick up of rental car in Johannesburg Airport. Very nice and new rental car, spotless clean. Contacted me to assure the rental car was in good order and within service period, and when service needed arranged for another new rental car for me - brought to my hotel to make it easy for me. Upgraded my rental car when they brought me the next (newly service) car. Easy contact to company while I had their car. When I was hit from behind by a careless driver there was no problem with the company, all they needed was my info and they took care of it for me.

First no problem to drive around in Johannesburg and surround's. Mandela square has two very good restaurants (Trumps and Bucher). Shopping mall Sandton City has many shops, not only expensive. Take care some places if you have to turn right with your car, green light means not that you just can drive, have a look at your left first. Restaurant "the grill house" in Sandton center had great food an fantastique view over Johannesburg. Car Return at Johannesburg Airport was easy done, thanks to the whole crew.

To get through passport control and get your luggage speedily, you should know that there are at least 2 queues: 1 for RSA citizens and another for non-RSA citizens. Both queues move relatively quickly, but ensure you go into the correct to avoid any issues. There are no paper forms to fill in which is great! After passport control take note on a big screen what is the convener carousel where the luggage will be deposited to know exactly where to go. When waiting for the luggage stand close to the exit of the short converyer to receive the luggage as soon as it comes out. There are plenty of trolleys in the area if you have bulky suitcases. Once your luggage comes out, proceed towards the exit. Toilets are a good idea at this point - still very clean and uncongested. There will be a customs/security checkpoint just before the exit. If you have a connecting flight, you can re-check in your luggage right at that point without having to exit. If you are exiting the airport proceed out to the general public area. All is very smooth and clear.

International travelers are advised to carry cash as fuel must be paid for in cash or using a gas-company issued credit card. Most gas stations have ATMs, but the ATMs are not always functional. There are no self-serve gas stations. It is customary to tip attendants who clean your windshield and/or check your oil.

Depsite the fact that this airport has a slightly negative reputation in the Netherlands, we have not experienced anything negative over the past year. Handling of passengers is fast and easy. Airport has clean ablutionblocks. Checkin was also fast and way in advance. Boarding was as expected also fast and efficient. Departure was in time. Number of restaurants at the airport is not so good. Having a meal at the intercontinental (al fresco ) before flight is really nice.

Before your travel, ensure you have your car hire voucher printed out. Makes sure that you bring your valid driver's licence and the credit card used for the car hire. In case there is not a map at the car hire desk, have your route printed out or bring your own map or GPS. This will avoid any confusion on leaving the airport and getting to your destination. Once you have checked your vehicle and are happy with it, store your luggage and adjust your seat and mirrors before you depart. This will prevent any mishaps when trying to make adjustments whist traveling. Be safe and keep to the correct sides of the road for the country you're driving in. Happy travels.

I travel a lot and a follow a few rules: Try every type of food you can, at least 1 bite before you reject it. I make a decision before I go about taxi's or hire car and stick to it (never regret a decision made). Same about Hotels am I just working so any old thing will do, or do I hope for a weekend or relax again I decide before I go and stick to the decision. I take a small amount of local monies (or get it from a cash machine). I then use the credit card so I pay £1 extra per transaction, but remember the credit card company is buying the services/good so any issues it's their problem not yours.. well worth the £1.. I always check if the flight is full if not see about a spare seat next to me don't waste time trying to get an upgrade. I always see if the hotel has a bigger or better room while at reception 30% of the time it works

Ask for maps or directions out of the airport - while there are signs, knowing the direction of where you want to go is helpful.

Make sure you type in your email address correctly. If in any doubt about your hire, contact the company by phone. They are very helpful. There is a petrol station on the airport (Johannesburg O R Tambo), so fill up when you get there. Take pictures or video of any damage. Although we had no problems on return. Most people in South Africa want to help you, but be aware of the few that don't. Driving in South Africa is easy. Don't get stressed about it.

Along Panorama route, it is can be breathtaking and scenic at every corner of the road, however, there are potholes along the route. Eyes on the road please! Please make sure you test your aircon before you leave the rental compound. Due to the high heat and temperature of the African sun, your aircon might not work! Additionally, we used our Chev Aveo into Kruger National park, you do not need a 4x4 to explore the park, however, i recommend staying on more gravel road, as dirt part might be moist and wet to pass through. Enjoy!

Get SAFE directions to Northern suburbs or destinations. Some of the airport routes to the city and North go through very run down areas with higher risk of crime. Warn about police stopping people for very minor traffic infringements e.g. not indicating!

I had landed in johannesburg and rented the car from there. This is the business hub of south africa. Touched down to excellent weather. Please i would recommend that you book with holidaycars.com. i then travelled to cape town with the same car i rented from holidaycars.com. a 1300km drive. Never once did the car cause any problem. Please do book through them. You have to visit south africa for at least 2 to 3 weeks in order to cover the full country. You have to visit the botanical gardens in Johannesburg together with a family day out at gold reef city for the kids. Then haev a picnic at the beautiful park in Johannesburg named as zoo lake. Then a day out at johannesburg zoo. Johannesburg offers a wide range of restaurants to tourists. Then off to cape town, you have to visit table mountain one of the seven wonders of the world. Then a drive to chapman peak. A very beautiful and scenic drive. Excellent beaches such as muizenburg beach, camps bay or clifton beach. Then a day to cape agulhas, a place not many have heard of. This is the place where the indian and atlantic oceans meet. The atlantic being icy cold water and indian being warm water wherein one is able to swim. Signal hill offers a beautiful view of cape town. Cape point also a very scenic drive. Please if you visit south africa this a must. The two cities are totally different with johannesburg being a fast city and business hub and cape town a slow and peaceful city. Durban is also very beautiful.
