I absolutely loved my travels in Spain and Portugal but the driving time was WAY too much! I would suggest that, if a traveler is flying into Madrid but journeying to Portugal, to get a connecting flight from Madrid to Lisbon, Porto or Faro and rent a car there instead. Then do the reverse coming back to Madrid! The rental car was absolutely necessary for us to get to remote areas of Portugal, but we could have had so much more time to explore if we would've avoided the ~15 hours of driving time between Spain and Portugal.

the airport can be a bit confusing so give yourself plenty of time. The security points are very efficient and pass through very quickly. The shops can be a bit expensive but that’s what happens with a captive audience, overall a nice airport and most staff speak English.

Tips-bring your car chargers from home, phone holders for the car. Also its gets very hot in Madrid and a soft cooler is very good to have. Several new laws have changed for downtown Madrid in regards to cars, be sure to familiarize yourself and make sure your rented car is approved to go there. Very important to remember that Spain, many people walk and take public transportation. Beware on extra alert and take extra precaution when make turns a lights where there are crosswalks.

Madrid airport is actually quite large so maybe plan for some extra time if you are traveling out of a different terminal. Traveling into Madrid using a rental car was actually quite easy! I would recommend visiting the plaza mayor. The line to visit the royal palace was really long, so maybe reserve tickets ahead of time if possible. We booked a hotel that seemed to be near the airport, the Avent Hotel. While it was a very nice hotel, it wasn’t as close as we thought so the taxi fare round trip cost almost $50. I would recommend using the shuttle if possible. Madrid was a beautiful place to visit, with so much history and culture. It’s definitely worth visiting! The architecture of the buildings was magnificent!

Say no to everything the rental car staff tries to sell you. don't cede into their scare tactics. Drive North of Madrid for 60km and find the beautiful Sierra de Guadarrama, the mountain road takes you up to 2.000 Meters. You'll find some amazing lakes and natural swimming pools on the way.

The Airport is really big and it takes app. 10 minutes to get from T1 to the metro(subway). It is old Airport (the EU part) but inside it is modern. The metro is well organized. Same the navigation to and in the metro. You can buy "day tickets" for a good price. There are a few shops with meal and coffee :)

Arrive early if you are in a hurry as Firefly didn’t have a lot of staff working to process rentals. The wait wasn’t too bad overall. All of the Firefly offices are outside the airport, so you might have to walk a bit to get there. The metro is very quick to Madrid city center, about 35 minutes. If you are renting a car from the airport, but not flying, don’t waste money on a cab. Be sure to read the rental agreement throughly, the insurance policies are a bit complicated. If you are planning on driving in the countryside, you may want to purchase full coverage.

Signs are missing for location of rent a car Signs when drive in and out of the airport are mostly in Spanish !! Rent a car return is on T 1 so be careful in case you travel from T2 . Gates are available only after you pass the security. Outside you just see the terminal and check in counters.

The airport is vast so if unsure of where to find the car rental desk enquire with a member of staff, it will save you time. Upon returning a car rental to terminal 1, follow the signs for terminal one instead of using the sat nav for the car rental destination as this will bring you to a floor above where you need to be, with a further ten minute journey to the correct place. Interment had the cheapest deal I could find online and searched quite a bit. It is much cheaper to book online months in advance and most offer a free cancellation in case you change your plans. The deposit was only 300, when I booked through holidaycars.com, again this was the best deal out there and considerably less than the competitors. Service at the desk in the terminal was friendly and not too pushy when offering additional cover. The car was picked up in the car park where all the other car rental cars are, so no deference in comparison to other providers. The car it's self was exactly as advertised and was clean inside and out, with a full tank.
