Check in returns at a different location than where people are reserving cars. Mark areas for parking returns more clearly.

The airport is open air. The agricultural inspection is not open till 5:15 am. Everyone goes through the inspection. Only your cargo, hold luggage is inspected the rest is at the next airport. The rental cars go fast. Make sure you have all your documents!

We stayed in Volcano. This was to be the highlight of our trip but ended up having to drive into Hilo for everything - dinner, excursions, groceries. It was about a 30 minute drive. So many stores, restaurants closed on Sunday so we struggled with dinner the first night. Wish we would have stayed in town now. Visited Coconut Island for a day! Great place to spend the day with small sandy spots where you can get into the water. Did a volcano tour with Travel Shack. We had Angela as a guide and she was fantastic. Took us to a private Lava Tube - such a treat!

HolidayCars.com was the best price the agent upgraded me for free and was super helpful. Quick service and car was clean and smelled good. Easy to use and quality service. Car was full of bells and whistles and made driving easy. They provided and asked if we needed information about the area. Was knowledable when we asked for directions. Very pleasant and would recommend over some other rental companies. I used Thrifty in the past and Budget was much better. Would HIGHLY recommend HolidayCars.com

We flew into Hilo airport from Kauai. It was an easy trip, and we had no issues with Hilo airport. We appreciated how our car rental office along with the cars were right outside the arrivals. I recommend flying in and out of Hilo as opposed to Kona's airport. Kona Airport is outside, and the buildings which are there have no air conditioning. Also, Hilo airport is situated in a convenient location in relation to the town.

Travel Tips: 1. Reserve with the Thrifty Hilo airport as they are courteous, prompt and efficient. 2. Make sure to call the on-site kiosk at Thrifty if your flight is delayed; they made sure our rental car was there when we arrived and this was after hours. 3. Make sure you check the vehicle once it is received and document any kind of dents or scratches. 4. Book your car early. 5. Booking on-line is also easy.

If you want to see the lava flow in Kalapana, be prepared for a four mile bike ride then a two-mile hike in and two miles out back to a four mile bike ride. Go up to the Kilauea caldera and visit the Jagger museum, which is as close as you can get to the crater these days. Drive the Hamakua coast, stop at Akaka Falls, then on the Tex Drive Inn in Honoka'a for malasadas - they are almost as good as Leonard's in Honolulu! If you drive around the island to Kona, be prepared for parking challenges. If you park in the city lot bring cash for the machines where you pay in advance. Driving back to Hilo take the new highway- ( Daniel K. Inouye) It cuts more than an hour off the trip. But - be prepared with a full tank of gas and an empty bladder. There are no services of any kind for 50 miles, but it is an excellent road and the views of the recent lava flows are worth the drive.

Small quiet airport. Means little traffic, but few services. There is a small cafe outside of security, and a 'bar' with hot dogs or instant noodles inside, but that is about it. Counter for Hawaiian Air was quick and simple to use. Security check was easy, but pre-check was closed by 5:00 on a weekday, so don't expect it open. There is a gas station right across from the airport, so easy to fill and return cars. A few restaurant options nearby, so eat before you get to the airport.

Go all over the island. It is very diverse and vast. I stayed in Pahoa, up from Hilo. I stayed in the jungle at an Air B&B. Kind of rural, fun hippie town, a little out there, but the people were nice. Hilo is an equally cool town. Rainy side of the island, great markets and produce. Great food there and tons to do. Great Thai restaurant called Sombats. Super yummy! Find a map and just go do everything you have time for, you will not regret it!

Hilo is a very lively town. Tsunami park and a local market is a must to visit. Small parks are everywhere - really small but very cute and great views. Just drive the shore and you will see them. Locals are friendly but looks like they got their share of tourists. Just be nice and polite, don't go to private property and you will blend. Nearby towns like Kalapana and Pahoa are great too. You can walk the lava beach with black sand, visit local market or fair. Lava boat tours is a must. Once in a lifetime to see lava flowing into the ocean.
