Car Rental Kona International Airport

Everybody needs a vacation once in a while. Put a Hawaiian vacation in Kona on your bucket list and start saving up. On your vacation you’ll probably need a car to travel from A to B for a full Hawaiian experience. HolidayCars will help you find the rental car that suits you best even at a sharp price. You’ll find several public bus lines and shuttles at Kona International Airport, but renting a car is a perfect idea to see the region and its surroundings. Just across the baggage claim areas A and B there are several car rental companies.

Kona International Airport in Kalaoa

Kona Airport, officially named Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport, is located at Keahole in Kalaoa, about 15 km away from Kona city center, and is the main international airport on the Island of Hawaii. You are most likely to arrive at this airport from your inter-island flight or your flight from the mainland. The airport also serves Trans-Pacific flights. Kona International Airport occupies about 3,450 acres and has 3 passenger terminals within the same passenger building. Several airlines serve the airport, most notably United, Delta, Hawaiian, Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, American, Mokulele and Kona Shuttle.
The look of Kona Airport gives its visitors the very Hawaiian look and feel. The airport doesn’t have a large building with sterile hallways or multi-stories; it looks like a collection of huts that makes you feel at home in paradise immediately. While passengers wait for their flight, they can enjoy a restaurant/bar, lei and fresh flower stands, newsstand, and gift shops. If you have a little extra time on your hands while at the airport, it is recommended to experience the Ellison S. Onizuka Space Center which is dedicated to the memory of the Kona native and first Asian American in space.

Hire a car at Kona Airport

Car hire in Kona is by far the most convenient option for local transport; this way you’re free in doing whatever you want. There are so many beautiful spots in Hawaii to discover. The Big Island is known for its active volcanoes, orchids, golf courses and scenic coastline, so you will never have a dull moment. Adventurers can swim with sharks in Haleiwa (Oahu), take a boat tour through Na Pali Coast in Kauai and enjoy the landscapes by learning its history, passing through waterfalls, snorkel with turtles and so much more. The Hawaiian Islands have a wide diversity of nature definitely worth to see. Hire a car at Kona Airport so you can visit the most beautiful cities, such as Naalehu, Honokaa Kaunakakai and Maui. Discover a true paradise on earth!

Kona Airport car rental companies

Renting a car at Kona Airport should be planned ahead, because the price of rental cars can fluctuate very fast due to supply and demand. Most big car hire companies are represented at Kona Airport, as well as some local ventures, but HolidayCars compares only the best and trusted rental companies. Their offices are right in front of the airport, so receiving your rental car has never been so easy. From small low budget cars to luxurious or premium category cars, HolidayCars will always find the right car you need for your holiday. At Kona Airport you’ll find the following car rental companies:

1. Do not arrive too early if you have to check a bag as the agent may not available until closer to when your flight departs. 2. Do not attempt to bring any fruits (apples, bananas, etc.) or vegetables in your bags - they will be confiscated at the agricultural check. 3. Luggage retrieval sometimes takes a bit longer than you might expect but I've never had a problem. 4. Every time I've rented a car, the overall process went smoothly. 5. Some car rental agencies need more agents when more than one flight arrives at similar times. 6. There are always staff to help you cross a street/crosswalk immediately.

The airport is easy access into and from the site. Rental car shuttles are readily available, quick and simple. As mentioned earlier, go directly with the rental car service. They are more direct and clear. I could not contest a thing when I used a third party booking agent like HolidayCars. Furthermore, being a nonUS company, it made it more sketchy to deal with them. Otherwise, Kona airport is a small airport with open air boarding area. It begins the Hawaiian aspect of your trip.

The best travel tip I can give you, is get a rental car. It allows you to get to places that are just too difficult to get to you by bus or public transportation. You are able to go to for snorkeling on such as Two step. We were even able to swim with the dolphins without having to pay a guide tour since we had a car to take us to Hookena bay. I would also recommend the farmers market. There were also several fun places to eat as a vegan vegetarian, the herbivorewas great as was Lava Lava, their virgin pina colada is the bomb!

TIPS: 1. Tip the shuttle driver if he's helping load your heavy bags. 2. All you need to take to Hawaii is two swim suits, a bottle of SPF-30 sunscreen, sandals, and one of those little soft-sided insulated beverage bags that will hold a six-pack and some ice. I am exaggerating of course; actually, all you need is a bottle of SPF 30 so you do not burn up when you are walking from the plane to the baggage claim area. 3. Put on the sun screen in the lavatory on the plane before it lands, so you don't have to take a chance on getting a burn when they open the door. 4. Going to the airport: Wear a swimsuit, shorts, and a loud shirt under your regular winter clothes, and wear sandals. You can throw away the winter clothing if you want, or just leave it all in the bathroom in the plane shortly before landing, you know, when you step in to put on the SPF 30. Someone on the return flight can probably use them. 5. When you arrive in Kona go to Thrifty and pick up your car. Remember you do not have to stop and get your baggage because you didn't bring any. This saves time. 6. Drive the car from the airport straight to Costco. Load up on sunglasses, food and "beverages." 7. Don’t buy loud clothing at Costco, there are better selections of loud clothing in downtown Kona. But the sunglasses selection at Costco is pretty good. 9. Ice up, drive to the beach, and chill out.

The rental car site is close and very easy to get in and out of. There is a gas station about 3 miles away from the airport so fueling up before returning is easy. If going to Hilo from Kona, allow plenty of time (at least 2 hours) due to weather going over The Saddle Road and possible protests on top. The Kona airport is small and a little confusing so if it is your first time, add extra time. Enjoy the drives, there is so much to see! Obey the speed limits (Police cars are hard to spot!) and you will have a great time visiting Hawaii!

Get a jeep if you plan to go to Green Sands Beach. The walk will take all day. Try to get a car with tinted windows. If you get a convertible, get their insurance cause sometimes they know you're a tourist and they slash the cover to get in. Do not keep anything in the car even if your parked in hotel or just around town or at beaches. I love the island and its a great place. Very safe generally just don't be obvious. Go to all the venues, especially down to Kona where you can do a lot of water activities and get some great local food right after. The water gets warm right after it rains so thats a perfect time to take a dip. Be sure to get a malasada or an ice cream snow cone. AND most of all, don't take anything from the island that is of natural habitat like rocks or corals or flowers. That takes away from the state and is a bad spiritual decision. The natives don’t appreciate it at all. At the airport, youll go through an agriculture scan on your bags to be sure youre are not bringing fruits & vegetables. You can bring things home like what you can buy in the ABC stores. Also, if you spend $100 or more at ABC, you get a free gift. The more you spend the more you get!

Kona is a great place to take a snorkeling trip down to Capt Cooks monument, lunch is included. If you like coffee, there are literally dozens of Kona Coffee growers on the western side of the island. Be sure to drive up Hwy 19 to the top of the Big Island to visit King Kamama's birthplace. To experience a completely different climate and topography, drive over to the Hilo side of the island. There are a number of beautiful waterfalls on the western side of the island. In the town of Kona there is a great number of shops and restaurants. One of our favorites is the Fish Hopper overlooking the Kona bay, and the Kona Inn has a great restaurant. Our favorite dinner was at Merriman's in Waimea in the northern part of the island on Hwy 19.

Head over to Captain Cook, the drive is worth every moment and the smells and sounds take your breath away. Snorkel in Kahalau'u beach park in Kona, the fish are actually tame and you can get a really good look and it's a safe beach for kids. Then go to Hilo and walk the Kaumana caves which is really the longest lava tube on the island (you could go all the way back to Kona but I don't recommend it!). I would pay tribute to the various heiau, the places of worship for the Hawaiian religion. There are a great many cultural sites to see. One of my favorites spots, is at Kealakekua bay where Captain Cook was killed. I wish I could have seen Mauna Kea again. Or taken a hike down Waipiʻo valley. But wherever you go, it is imperative that all cultural sites or heiau you visit are treated with the utmost reverence as you would a church. There are many customs broken or liberties that are taken by foreigners when they come to Hawaiʻi, which is really disrespectful to the culture and the people.

Explore as much as you can! We drove almost 500 miles in the week we were there, and I don't regret a mile of it. The Big Island has so many sights to see, and every drive is a scenic one (especially given the lack of billboards...). The Hot Ponds were great, as were the different colored sandy beaches (black, green, white, etc.). One thing to note if traveling with children under the age of 16 is that you won't be able to go to the Mauna Kea observatory due to the high altitude, although you can go up part ways to a visitor's center. If not traveling with children, though, I wouldn't miss a night at the summit!

There was even snow at the top of the mountain when we went in December. We stayed at the Royal Kona Resort and were very pleased with our stay as it was right on the water. I highly recommend to explore the island and go beyond tourist acitivities like visiting the shops. Instead visit local markets, farmers markets, local restaurants and towns where you will truly find the Hawaii spirit and beauty of the environment.

The water bottles will keep your food cold and then be refreshing for you to drink later on:) Absolute destinations are Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (for at least a full day) and snorkelling at Honaunau and Kahaluu Bays!

Kona is very easy to drive, we experienced no congestions. Kailua Kona has limited free (street) parking, so be prepared to opt for paid public parking facilities.

Read the fine print on the airline cancelation insurance. We paid for insurance for six tickets and was unable to use the insurance to cancel or transfer two tickets.

Kona and the Big Island of Hawaii are awesome. Great beaches and lots of green turtles. Lots of Hawaiian history and of course Volcanoes National Park.

easy to drive around the Big Island - visiting northern beaches on Kohala coast is a must, especially with high end hotels. Seeing Volcano National Park, and spending time in East Hawaii, including Hilo town, and the Hamuka coast is a treat

Some of the roads to some of the more interesting beaches are a little rough, so 4WD helps eliminate what would otherwise be a long walk.
