Washington National Airport is convenient. I've only once had the opportunity to leave the airport and ride the metro line. That was most helpful. The Rental Car Center is on the airport grounds which works well when retrieving and returning the vehicle. The airport expansion appears to be progressing well. Regret that some parts of the view of the great city of Washington, D..C., will be obstructed.

The airport can be a bit tricky as it is somewhat large. Know which gate is yours and where the entry to that gate is. Car rental kiosks are located in Terminal A and there are multiple levels. Read the signs when you first walk in to figure out which level your rental company is on.

Check many sites for prices. Check early and often. Always arrive early at the airport. You never know how long it'll take you to go through TSA. Try not to cram too much into your time. it'll make it stressful instead of relaxing. Give yourself time to try something new.

Tell the DCA airport to put up notices that the shuttle bus to Rental cars are on the the 3rd level outside. Took us 30 mins to find it after asking 3 people. 2 people gave us wrong information at 11:30PM and we barely made it to the other building before they closed at midnight.

Reagan is wonderfully tray to got into and immediately get into the city. I love this airport, it's always fast and easy. I love it's design as well, very open, bright, with good colors where they have space to paint.

I enjoy flying in and out of the Washington Reagan airport because of its smaller size. It also has a convenient location in northern VA with close proximity to DC and has metro access. The construction has made drop off and pick up a little longer but it's still not bad. The food options have expanded in the pre and post security areas which is great as well. I enjoy the ease of not having to take shuttle from each terminal and the airport is easily walkable as is the parking lot area from the terminal. Most of the rental car agencies are available in close proximity as well with the exception of EZ rent a car and perhaps a few others. The security lines at DCA are also not as bad as other airports so you do not have to get there quite as early.

Use Holiday Cars to book your rental car. They offered the best price. Hertz/Thrifty provided excellent service. Compact cars are a good deal, especially if there are only two of you. Also, I suggest that you book your rental car early. Use company that have the rental cars on airport.

Check in advance about the shuttle. It works great, but the pickup is from the parking garage, not the terminal. Talk with the staff. They were very knowledgeable about the area. They also knew all about the airport and how to get around there. Spend time in Old Town Alexandria. It was terrific. I never thought much about the area, but my wife and I are now considering it for retirement.

DCA is easily accessible by Metro to DC areas. The airport itself is easy to get around in. Bring an empty water bottle to fill once you get through security. Coffee lines can be long in the morning.

It's a handy place to get better pricing on rental cars. All major rental agencies are there. I recommend Avis. Be aware that the garages to drop off rental cars are around the same side of the airport as the arrival/departure gates, so you may be stuck in some traffic when you go to drop your car off. In addition, they make it very difficult to exit those garages if you're not in a rental car. So if someone drops you off, they may have a tough time exiting the garage. Metro is probably the best bet.

Know that each terminal has limited options. Plan to grab a bite or spend time outside of security before heading to your gate. Sometimes TSA is not faster than the regular line.

I love Washington, DC. I grew up here and return to see my mom, shop and enjoy tourist attractions twice a year. Its best to take the Metro wherever you can. Use Yelp for dinner recommendations. Falls Church, Arlington and Roslyn are great places to eat. Be sure to research MANY places in the DC area to visit, not just the crowed museums.

I LOVE DC! Lots to do and so easy to get around. We rented a car and was able to find parking, and a short walk to the MLK memorial, and from there, it was a nice walk to the FDR memorial and then to the Jefferson monument.
