Be aware that Madeira is very hilly and steep hill starts are inevitable. Outwith Funchal parking was free everywhere else that we went even in custom built car parks. Areeiro summit has fabulous views and PR1 is stunning if you are fit and comfortable with big drops (there is always a guardrail so exposure is not too bad). H M Borges in Funchal offer a wide range of Madeira wines to try from 1 Euro to 7 with informed service, highly recommended. Funchal market is expensive, lovely to see but buy elsewhere.

Typical 1980's airport, little or no frills but efficient enough and friendly enough but could tell staff not that interested as it was off season. Flight was delayed by 2 hours so had to wait in departure lounge but not exactly comfortable waiting area or that interesting, limited activities although the outside balcony overlooking planes and runway was interesting

If you plan to explore the island, hire a small car - you’ll understand why :) Look for the SurPrice rep with a board, waiting in the car rental area at the terminal exit. There is a 5 minute ride off airport to pickup the car.

Small car was very practical in narrow streets. Cabo Girão was our first sightseeing and the view was fantastic. We drove the mountain roads and saw diffrent kinds of landscapes from forests to villages and breathtaking views from mountains. Car rental was mandatory to us and navigation was easy.

Great visit to Medeira. Make sure to visit the high points ( as in Elevation when it is clear weather and don't bother if it cloudy). Also make sure to do a lavada walk and see some of the forest. Drive to the natural swimming pools and take in the spectacular scenery on the way. Taste some local wine and beers as well take a stroll down the Funchal waterfront. The other must is to sample the abundent fresh seafood. Have a great visit, no complaints from me not even the weather!

Listen to the people at the rental. They give advice and tips. For exemple take a stronger car for hilly Madeira. Go out as early as possible to use all daylight and have beautiful colours to see and photograph. Decide before starting the drive to take it easy and safe and that things will be smooth. In another country, people on or off the road might drive terrible or not follow codes and rules that well. Take it into account and do not stress. Enjoy a smooth and nice holyday!

The Island of Madeira is a place of real natural beauty that begs to be explored. To do this you need a small car and have a spirit of adventure. The roads have greatly improved over the past 15 years and getting around the island is now safe and efficient. The mountain roads are best avoided when heavy rain has recently fallen due to road debris from the surrounding hillsides, that said I have never experienced any concerns. The food, beauty and the friendliness of the islanders draws you to visit Madeira time and time again.

Nice airport, well organised, clean with friendly staff, a good thing to do until you are ready to board is once through security go out to the smoking area(which doesnt smell of smoke as its so big and in the open) where you can watch the planes arriving and departing.

Se tiverem tempo evitem os túneis, prefiram as antigas estradas regionais para apreciar a beleza da costa. Não perder a costa noroeste da ilha que é linda (em especial entre S.
