The LIS airport is wonderful and renting from Sixt has gone smoothly both times I’ve been their customer. I will definitely return. If using your phone map app for directions, be sure to check if your settings are avoiding toll roads or not; on my first Portugal visit, I accidentally took a very scenic route to my first destination because of this, haha! I loved having my own rental car to explore the country but was also relieved not to drive within the city of Lisbon. I left that to the professionals/locals! I can’t wait to return. Até a próxima!

The signs at the airport were a little confusing to find the place to return the car. The car rental desks are in the terminal and it is a short walk to the cars. I think it is helpful to rent the automatic toll device so that you can use the fast lanes when driving. Also, there are instances when there are no toll collectors and you need an automatic toll device.

If you are planning on doing a lot of sightseeing in Lisbon, you should definitely invest in a 24 hour pass. It allows you to ride the trams, buses, funiculars, and even the Santa Justa lift for under 7 euros. While in Lisbon use your taste buds to decide for yourself which pastelaria perfects the pasteis de nata, a custard tart that is said to have originated in Belem. Although Lisbon is a must see, be sure to spend time exploring the countryside and visiting smaller towns where you can really experience the food, culture, and hospitality that Portugal is known for. With it's colorful tiled architecture and the picturesque Douro river, Porto is a very romantic city that begs you to stay longer. While you are there be sure to try the francesinha, a tasty dish of bread, ham, sausage, smothered in melted cheese, tomato and beer sauce. Also, spend plenty of time tasting the exquisite wines at one of the many vineyards throughout the country.

Modern airport, with all the amenities one would expect. Easy to get around, the directions are clear. Abundant seating areas, as well as restaurants and / or cafés. Good connection to the city via subway and bus, if you do not want to take a taxi. Two good hotels within walking distance, ideal when one has a very early flight. And for those with longer waiting times, the Ana Lounge is a good option: you can pay the admission directly at the reception, and all passengers are allowed, regardless of the airline one flies with.

Can’t miss the castle in Sintra. Go early in the morning to beat the crowds. The palace in Mafra is outstanding with the cathedral inside it. Porto is an underrated city. Go to the Douro Valley for laid-back wine and port tasting and some of the best hospitality in Europe. If you have time, Marvao is worth a stop and a tour of the castle and walled city. In addition, appreciate the immaculate highway quality and ease of traveling Portugal by car!

Lisbon airport can be a little confusing outside the gate area. There's two separate check-in areas and the commercial kiosks at the departures entrance block the signage. A GPS is a must for travel in the cities of Portugal as the streets are narrow and winding. Trying to use a map is difficult. A wine tasting excursion to the Douro region is worth the time and energy as the area is beautiful, the wine very good and these trips usually include a fun boat trip up the Douro river. We loved our time in Lisbon & Porto but we’re especially fond of Cascais and plan to go back. The Portuguese are, for the most part, fluent in English. They are friendly, helpful and happy to host tourists. A good point of interest when driving from Lisbon to Porto is Cabo da Roca, the Western most point of the European continent. A wind blown promontory above the Atlantic Ocean.

If spending a week in Portugal, rent a car and explore around! You will see beautiful views and can have great stops between the major cities. - Visit Porto! Worth the hype, and less busy than Lisbon. The port caves are a must, as well as a walking tour in the city. Also, visit the garden from the Serralves art museum, with a great view on the building and great statues. - Aveiro is a great stop to do as well, amazing salt farms, views from the lighthouse, and cute canals with gondolas. The true Venice of Portugal. If you go there don't leave without trying ovos moles - In Lisbon do not miss out on the Gulbekian and Berardo art museums. Pack light and if possible only carry hand luggage. You’ll spend less time in Qs waiting to check your bags and retrieve them at baggage claim. Pay for reserved seats and priority boarding, especially on budget airlines. Not only do you save time and have less stress during the boarding process, there will almost certainly be room in the overhead bin for your carryon. Apply for Global Entry to save time at passport control. Lastly, when traveling to a location where your native language isn’t spoken, use the google translate app’s microphone for quick/easy translations, including oral translations.

There is an online checkin which helps the checkin process. They have a sign to follow the download process. The key is to find the globe icon to switch to your preferred language. You can then input the information they want from you to speed up the process. Even doing this though, it was still a long wait to get our car and go. Figure on two hour process. You get a number. We had approximately 20 or more people ahead of us and only two people doing the checking in. If you figure on there being a wait time and process, then you can plan on it and not be so rushed.

If you're going to stay in Lisbon, and do not have too much luggage to carry, take the subway the city center: it's only a 10-15mn ride, and much, much chepaer than a taxi. Otherwise, check the Aero-BUS, as it stops close to several hotels: you pay a little more than by subway, but it is easier if you have more luggage. Lisbon is a beautiful city! Take de vieuws from the top of Parque Eduardo VII, from the castle of S.Jorge, or from the viewpoint of Principe Real. Enjoy the terraces of the cafés in Chiado, and the cobble stone streets of Bairro Alto, Alfama or Mouraria. For a different experience of Lisbon, go to Parque das Nações, beautifully located by the river, for restaurantes, night life events, one of the largest aquariums of Europe (Oceanário), etc. The old doc warehouses between Cais do Sodré and Alfama, refurbished to stylish restaurants and bars, are also a nice place for a night out. Or you might kike to spend a day at Colombo, the biggest shopping mall of the Iberian Peninsula. On the cultural side, you should not miss the Gulkenkian Museum and the Centro Cultural de Belém, but there are many other Museums and monuments which are also worth a visit. Lisbon is a city with plenty to chose from, depending on time and interests.

If renting a car in Lisbon you need to take advantage of all the places to see outside of the capital! You won’t need a car in Lisbon as you can walk every where but you should take a day trip over to Sintra and see the town and the castle. It’s absolutely breathtaking. Driving from Lisbon to the southern Algarve coast only takes 3 hours so it’s a must do. Lagos and Portimao have some of the most beautiful beaches, caves, and sandstone rock formations going into the ocean and without a car you aren’t able to explore from one coastal town to the next. The car was the biggest perk we had to exploring the Algarve. Porto is a 3 hour drive north from Lisbon and that also incredible. A beautiful city sitting right on the duoro River. Incredible food, incredible sights, and incredible Porto and vino verde wine! Having the car to go explore the duoro valley was amazing. Must do for sure!

All in all it is an easy airport to navigate but is pretty big. I would recommend arriving by the standard advised time prior to departure for international flights as the check in line could be long. Security goes fairly quickly. If you have lounge access, I find Blue to be better than ANA but both are comfortable. Time from lounge to gate can vary so be conscious of that. If going with a rental, be weary of companies such as Goldcar that advertise a cheap price in order to get you in the door and then hit you with essentially required add-ons.

We would highly recommend other travelers to chose the services of Europcar. Not only because we were 100 %satisfied with the rented car but because of the professional customer service provided by the staff of Europcar at the airport in Lisboa. When we arrived to the Europcar office at the airport in Lisboa we received our ticket to get in line from an elderly gentleman who was very friendly with all customers while waiting in line to pick up their cars. Even though the line was long it went so fast to our surprise. The representative of Europcar who took care of us was extremely professional, he was able to answer all our questions and concerns (which we had as it was our very first time in Portugal). The administrative procedure didn't take more than 5-6 minutes including checking our personal credentials and recording all necessary data required for pick up the car we had reserved. Just a few minutes later we found ourselves sitting in the car we always wanted to drive in Portugal. During our trip we fully enjoyed our rented car which made our trip so memorable. To drive in Portugal, especially in Lisbon, it helps to have a small car as most streets are narrow and parking is at a premium. A GPS is also helpful: although the A series highways are amazing and easy to follow, driving in bigger cities and smaller towns can be challenging. It is also necessary to be aware of the toll routes on the highways, and do your research to decided whether or not you need a Via Verde activation, or whether you can pay the tolls yourself. I highly recommend researching the rules of the road and being careful when driving in Lisbon, as there are many one way streets, traffic lights that are not easily visible from your vehicle, and common knowledge rules that do not always have signage (i.e. do not turn right on a red light).

Lisbon is a wonderful city with plenty of amazing attractions. However, we rented a car for a reason. We highly recommend to drive to Sintra, and visit the castle and it’s wonderful gardens. From there you must visit the Windmill Restsurant on your way to Guincho. The beaches in Guincho are wild and beautiful no matter what season. From there drive to Cascais where a charming town with beautiful restaurants and boutiques offer something for any taste. You might want to visit the beautiful art museum . You could drive along the beach all the way back to Lisbon. The views are stunning. A suggestion for someone who does not travel on a tight budget or wants to celebrate a special occasion: In the Penha Longa Resort in the middle of the forest between Sintra and Cascais there is Portugal‘s most amazing restaurant, The Lab. It is a Michelin Resraurant , and our experience there was beyond any expectation of a fine dining place. Last but not at all least; we loved our car, the service was easy , friendly and efficient at the best price we have ever paid at Lisbon airport. We have used many different companies in the past, but will definitely go back to Rhodium next time. Carmela Casella

Lisbon itself is wonderful, many things to see and do. Travelling north of Lisbon to Silver Coast (Obidos) is also worth considering. Beautiful views, good food and friendly people. Golfers can enjoy interesting courses at very good prices. Weather Portugal is generally nice although the Atlantic wind can have a bite to it sometimes. Many Portuguese speak English or French, so communication is easy without being able to speak Portuguese.

Wow. So much to see and do! Lisbon is a wonderful city - full of culture and history but the real adventure is outside the city. Hiring a car allows you to travel around Portugal at your leisure and well worth it. Highlights are visiting Óbidos, Ericeira, Sintra, Tomar, Porto, Guimarães, Geres, Monsanto, Coimbra, Marvão, the Alentejo and the Algarve. You will miss seeing all of these amazing places if you dont hire a car! PLUS, don't miss visiting all the many small villages along the way. The people are warm and very proud of their country. Having a conversation with anyone, anywhere will show you how special Portugal is!
