Driving on the right is always a great place to start and very much appreciated by the locals... You can drive from north to south in about 1-1.5hours (120-80km/hr) on the motorway, so its worth exploring the contrasts between the arid south to the lush north. Some of the places we particularly enjoyed visiting in no particular order were; 'Los Gigantes' (north west) for the dramatic cliffs and scenery around the north west tip. Our visit to 'San Cristóbal de La Laguna' in the (north east), which used to be the capital before it moved to 'Santa Cruz', was interesting with history, Spanish architecture, small museums, cafe's etc, but unfortunately we needed more time than we had available to explore here. Then there's 'Puerto de la Cruz' which had to be one, if not our favourite location, with its extremely long and interesting Prominade and some great restaurants etc to relax, shops, history and lets not forget 'Loro Parque', which was brilliant!, you really could spend the whole day here! Last but not least there's 'Mount Teide', its a long way up and down and your brakes would probably appreciate cooling off halfway down, but its worth it. Just shy of the summit there's a visitor centre/cafe and tourist info and from here you can enjoy fell walks, scrambles and rock climbing, but if you want to ride the cable car be sure to book your tickets on line before you travel to save disappointment. We've hardly scratched the surface. Enjoy..

In Tenerife: Visit Anaga and the cafe at Mirador de la Granona in El Sauzal. Both will give you something unexpected. Candelaria is also very nice place to stop by. It has pretty much to give for a traveler. Still one of the best experiences have been Easter play in Los Realejos (visited year 2018). No need to know perfect Spanish because one can follow the play if only have some knowledge of the Easter things in Holy Bible.

The airport itself is located in the North. Ideal for Puerto de La Cruz or Santa Cruz but around an hours drive from the Southern resorts of Los Cristianos & Las Americas. It is a nice drive though but a bit of hassle if you don't hire a car. You must visit Mount Teide as it is beautiful.

Thrifty was fine and we had no issues. Their service was just fine. However, some of the drivers from CICAR (Canary Islands Car Rental) drive (when returning their cars to the rental lot) like wild savages and do not even respect Stop signs, almost causing an accident. So, please be very careful as you drive out of the Car Rental location so that you drive out in one piece.

We chose not to stay at Santa Cruiz but at Buenavista del Norte, which I think was the best choice. The view is great, and the village has kept its non-touristic atmosphere.

Car hire and petrol is so cheap and its the easiest way of getting around. Try visiting Teide at night to see the stars - there is no contamination up there and the views are breathtaking. Cold at this time of year 2.5 degrees so wrap up warm...
