About Car Hire at Bristol International Airport

Bristol is a spectacular city, rich in history and heritage. It is all about the B’s, including boats, bridges, and the beautiful countryside. It has much to offer children and adults alike! From playgrounds and planetariums for the kids to the cathedral and chapel for the adults, there is a lot to explore here. At night, Bristol comes alive with lavish restaurants, exciting clubs, and hip bars. What better way to explore Bristol than by car?

Bristol International Airport (BRS) is the primary gateway to Bristol, which serves the region and nearby areas. Earlier used as an RAF base, the airport today consists of one runway, which is also the shortest in the country. The highest number of passengers ever managed was 8.2 million in 2017. Over 15 airlines ferry passengers from this airport. Swiss Airlines, KLM, Lufthansa, Ryanair, and Wizz Air are the most popular carriers. The most popular destinations from Bristol are Amsterdam, Katowice, Frankfurt, Zurich, and Madrid.

At Bristol International Airport, there are many types of car hire companies to select from based on your hire car requirements. Once you arrive at the airport and collect your luggage, proceed to the Silver Zone Car Park, which is a short shuttle ride away from the airport. Here, you will find the desks of the biggest car hire agencies. Sixt, Avis, Virtuo, Thrifty, Hertz, and Enterprise are only some of the hire agencies present at the airport. You have a range of car hire vehicles to pick from, depending on your requirements and price range. The size and cost of the hire cars vary, ranging from little minis and medium-sized sedans to large SUVs. Once you receive your hire car, drive to downtown Bristol, which is approximately 20 minutes away.

Downtown Car Hire in Bristol

Bristol has a reliable public transportation system that consists of buses, trains, and hire e-scooters. However, they may not take you everywhere you need to go. What’s more, if you are on a business trip or on a honeymoon, you do not want to get stuck relying on public transport anyway. Nothing is simpler than using a hire car from a downtown location to go in and around Bristol. Additionally, you could save money by hiring a car in the city centre as opposed to the airport. Due to the restricted space in the airport's parking area for hire cars, you may even have additional options to choose from in the city. A mid- or full-size SUV will guarantee that you, your family, and all of your belongings have ample space while on vacation. No matter if you are travelling alone or with a friend, you should get a car that can accommodate all of your needs.

Driving in Bristol

While travelling in Bristol can be a breeze, driving on the roads might not be because of the congestion. So here are a few laws to keep in mind before heading out:

While Bristol has plenty to offer, there are many destinations around that are worthy of road trips. Here are a few destinations we recommend:

If you and your family enjoy wildlife, get on the A4 from Bristol and head to Longleat Safari Park. The park is very well-maintained, which sets it apart from its rivals. In addition to normal farm animals like donkeys, chickens, and bunnies, you may see amazing species like koalas, hippos, gorillas, lions, huge anteaters, and meerkats here. When you are done with the tours, you can sip on some coffee or enjoy a pizza!

The biggest display cave system in Britain is located at Wookey Hole, a network of caves that lies beneath the Mendip Hills. It is an incredible sight that you will not soon forget. Keep an eye out for the rare rock formations on your way to Dinosaur Valley. It has delightful animatronics that will keep the children screaming with excitement! Get on the A38 and B3134; it takes approximately 45 minutes from Bristol to get here.

- don’t fill your hand luggage ( even if this is your only case. This is for gifts, shopping and to make your travel hands free as much as possible. - arrive early at the airport so you don’t need to rush through security or bag drop/ check in - check in before you arrive online - encase your book, any other reading materials and essential toiletries in a separate bag within your hand luggage. This is just in case the luggage needs to be checked in due to lack of space. It also saves time on board. - pre prepare your toiletries in the clear plastic bags before you arrive at the airport. This makes security process quicker. - take off your shoes, belts, jewellery and separate laptops and electrical items before you reach the security gate. This needs to be separated in each tray. - use Avis car rental, for your choice of hire car. Everything is prepared in advance and time is saved on collection and drop off. Seamless service and time saving. -

Do insure any batteries you are carrying, are kept in your carry on. When using the automatic check in machines, that your boarding pass, is inserted printing upwards, not like your passport, which is inserted, printing downwards. Makes sure that any keys you have for padlocks used on your cases, are on you, as security might ask you to open your case. Load your cases on the weighing machine, sideways and with the carry handle upwards. Tie a hankie or similar, to easy identify your case on the belt system Wear light slip on shoes. More often than not, you will not be asked to take them off. If your shoes use laces, you will definitely be asked to remove them. If there is a strong chance you will need your own medication on board, enclose it in a clear plastic bag.

Very organised airport in general. Nothing much prior to going through security, which is well tended & organised, it then centres around a circular shopping area, with a variety of eateries & watering holes. Gates all easily accessible with approx timed walks to each, with plenty of info boards

Bristol Airport is small to navigate. Give yourself plenty of time to get through security. Don’t let car hire company push for further insurance. Give yourself plenty of time to return car for car inspection. Look up petrol stations near to airport in advance to be organised to refuel car.

Do expect to pay an additional fee to bring the insurance excess down to a sensible level. Do leave enough time when collecting or dropping off car as the airport transport only runs every 30 mins. Do take the time to thoroughly check the vehicle over before signing any acceptance paperwork.

EasyJet's new automated checking in facility leaves a lot to be desired. Flight was showing on the notification boards to checkin at desks 1-12 so we queued up, had our boarding cards checked by the staff there and were shown to an automatic check-in station to weigh our bag, print labels etc. Unfortunately the machine didn't agree that the flight was actually open for checkin so we had to stand around waiting for 10-15 minutes until it finally accepted our bags. Security search area was fast and efficient despite being busy.

Nice small airport. Plenty of restaurants. Plenty of shops. Good seating area. Walk to gate can be long, ours was 7 mins. If someone meeting you at airport express pick up a short walk away but expensive £1 for a 10 mins wait! Security checks effective and staff friendly.

Book in advance and give yourself time in case there is someone is in front of you in the queue at the office. I had someone in front of me and had to wait about 20 minutes- not unreasonable but you ought to know. Check any scratches /marks you are not sure of with the person in the car park office.
