Several civilisations once ruled Sicily, including the Greeks, Romans, Arabs, and Normans, resulting in a rich and diverse culture, evident in the island's architecture, cuisine, and language.

Car hire at Catania International Airport

Catania International Airport, also known as Vincenzo Bellini Airport, is an international airport serving the city of Catania on the Italian island of Sicily.

The airport is the busiest airport in Sicily and the fourth busiest in Italy in terms of passenger traffic. Several airlines serve the airport, including Alitalia, Ryanair, and EasyJet. The airport offers flights to destinations throughout Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

The airport has two terminals: Terminal A, and Terminal B. Terminal A is the main terminal and handles most of the airport's traffic. Terminal B is a smaller terminal that handles low-cost carriers.

The airport has many facilities, including restaurants, bars, shops, a bus station, a train station, and car rental companies.

1) Find out what the speed limit is in advance of going to Sicily/Italy for each of the different grades of road. It is rarely posted along the road and while you want to avoid getting a speeding ticket, sometimes you could be going much too slow. 2) Don't trust the navigator voice on your phone to take you the best way through small historic centres. I had a few difficulties in being sent through steep narrow streets, as the shortest trip, when less direct but more comfortable routes would have been more enjoyable. 3) Get to Agrigento in the late morning, have lunch at "Capotavola" and then visit the temples in the late afternoon and sunset. Your tastebuds will be satisfied, your photos magical with beautiful light and your happiness will overflow, when you walk back up the road to the carpark seeing the lights reflecting on the Temple of Juno and the darkening sky around her.

Make sure you understand who you are actually renting your hire car from, many local agents acting for the big names and expect to wait for your car at busy times. Food a refreshments are plentiful whilst you await your hire car, be sure to take out independent hire car excess insurance before you travel. Completing registration on line for the hire car does not help, they still spend 15-20 minutes copying all the information again !

Sicily is very beautiful from within. You will meet cool people, get impressions of beautiful nature. Very good food and service if you avoid the "need to see" places, but will go inside the island and up the mountains. We saw huge sheep flocks grazing in the mist, between the stone monoliths. Eat at the farm restaurant at Don Santo. We experienced a wonderful night at the stormy sea, in a leased house just 15 meters from the sea. We definitely got back because 10 days were not enough.

Allow time for queues to pick up rental car. In Sicily renting a small car makes vavigating the narrow streets and parking much easier. Take out the full excess waiver to be safe. We did not need it but it gave us piece of mind in heavy traffic

Catania Fontanarossa is a clean and efficient airport, in a bright new Terminal building. Landside offers decent snack food; better than what's available after passing through security. Prices are comparatively reasonable on both sides. There's plenty of airside retail to suit all tastes and requirements. Security is smooth and efficient. For those travelling to non-Schengen countries, expect a long wait (in line) for Passport control to open.

Make sure everything is explained exactly,do not sign until you have read the small print. On returning Don’t arrive more than 2 1/2 hours before departure. As you will not be able to put your bags through. The coffee is good and the pizza.

Should you have to wait for the car rental to open (like me) just go round the Corner and have a marvellous coffee at the "Wood Café". This Café was absolutely worth not getting the car on time. So don't miss it!

The motorways are easy to drive on and on beautiful settings but do explore the back roads which being happy surprises. Beware of the tolls..try to make sure that you have change in the car. Taormina is a beautiful town so leave plenty of time to amble in the streets. Really worth a visit is Isola Bella which is a little haven of peace. Chat to people and hear their stories..we met many Who were happy to talk about the island and their life on it. Make sure you eat some ice Cream!
