Isle of Man airpot is very small. I'd recommend booking your hire car in advance. Make sure there is a parking disk in the car. Parking is free on the Isle of Man. However, you do need to display the parking disc to show your arrival time. Parking times vary depending on the street you park on. Make sure you bring your driving licence with you.

Don't forget to look out of the window when approaching the island - it's very beautiful. If you are travelling from the UK (as I was) the entire process of arrival is very straightforward. Although I only had a carry-on bag I could see that hold baggage was already being brought in to the terminal. I hired a car from Athol and was in the car within fifteen minutes of arrival and heading for Langness, within twenty five I was watching seals bobbing in the sea and Oystercatchers probing the sand. I was only on the island for a day to visit my parents grave but also managed to fit in the lovely sunset at Peel. The island is well served by fuel stations but don't forget to restore the tank to its original reading before returning it - there is a garage just North of the airport.

It's a tiny airport so usually arriving 90 minutes before departure is plenty of time. Free WiFi works very well in Departures. Best to stay upstairs in Departures as long as possible as holding lounge has no fee WiFi and limited seats. Change Manx currency to English at the information desk before you go to departures. Scenery is spectacular in the hilly centre of the island so recommend driving Douglas to Ramsey via the mountain road (but beware of motor bikes in summer). Visit The Sound to view The Calf of Man, you may see seals or perhaps even puffins at the right time of year.

Do get organised. Do keep printed copies of all your documentation to protect against mislaid phones or flat batteries. Do check your licence requirements ie do you need an International Driving Permit as well as well as your licence. If your licence is old and doesn't have photo id have your passport ready. Do be polite to staff even if you have a problem it will help to resolve any issues quicker and more stress free. Do take photographs all the way around the car and the more accessible under body parts to protect yourselves in case of damage claims.

I'm from the island originally, so I'm biased because I think there's loads to see and do! For example: Take a trip on the tram or the steam train. Top tips - Ramsey, Laxey or Groudle on the tram, where you can visit the Mooragh Park, the Laxey wheel, or the Groudle Glen railway. And on the train, Castletown for the castle and Scarlett nature trail, or Port St.Mary/PortErin for a longer walk to Cregneash, or Port Erin for Bradda Head. Or take the car and visit the west coast - Peel, again for the castle, but also Corrin's Folly, the tower overlooking the town, or the House of Manannan museum or to take a tour of the kipper factory. Then there are the glens, all of which are worth a visit. Glen Maye, on the west coast, and Groudle and Dhoon glens, on the east coast, are particularly pretty. And beaches - pebbly ones like Laxey and Groudle, sheltered sandy ones like Peel and Port Erin, or long sandy expanses with sand dunes all up the west and north coasts. Depending on the time of year it does occasionally get warm enough to paddle, or swim if you're really brave! In Douglas, the camera obscura on Douglas Head and the Manx Museum are both worth a visit. And finally, if you enjoy walking, there are hundreds of miles' worth of footpaths, all around the coast and across the island, with plenty of things to see on the way – and of course loads of cafés and pubs to top up your energy levels. And all that's not even to mention the TT races in May/June!

The Isle of Man is a beautiful Island. It is worth going a bit 'off track' to see the Islands best beauty sights. Manx Heritage do a fantastic job with all their attractions, and they are all worth a visit. If you are thinking of something more adventurous, you can always book a Kayaking trip with Adventurous Experiences. We did this and it was one of those events that I will remember for ever.

Walk one way along Douglas promenade, get the horse tram back, do the electric railway from Douglas to Ramsey (time it right to also do the steam train at Groudle Glen). Get the tram from Laxey upto the top of Snaefell for lunch on a nice day for views of Scotland, England, Wales and Ireland!! Drive round the TT course. Make time to travel the island, especially Port St Mary's and Castletown. Find hidden gems in the north too like Glen Helen, Sulby Glen, The Cronk, RAF Jurby and Bride.
