Renting a car in Edmonton

As distances are vast in Alberta and the roads are excellent, renting a car would be a perfect idea to get around with peace of mind. If you choose the airport rental, you can pick it up and drop it off at the same location, on the P1 level of parkade where all the rentals have a designated area for that. It's also possible to choose from the several car rental offices in Edmonton Downtown, although the airport would be a more convenient option.

Driving in Edmonton

With the location in the heart of the Canadian northern prairies, Edmonton is a great place for driving. Both the city proper and the outside areas are a pleasure to cruise through with amazing infrastructure, lots of lanes, and easy traffic. Moreover, renting a car would be an ideal way to navigate freely between different neighborhoods of the city.

Being in the North brings some issues too. Winters here are cold, it can get really snowy, and frozen slippery roads are not unheard of. Edmonton is a smaller airport and was extremely easy to navigate. Luggage arrived quickly and we didn’t have to wait very long. The rental car company, Routes, has a shuttle that picked us up in only a few minutes. Overall, we were off the plane, had our luggage and were on the toad on our rental car within half an hour. I will definitely book with Routes again. Even returning the car was seamless and there were no hidden surprises.

Their office is not located at the airport, and there are no signs telling you where to find them. You need their phone number or else they won't pick you up at the airport

Always let the car rental company know what time your flight is landing, give it another hour for delays and baggage pick up. Call for the shuttle when you see the baggage belt moving, the office is about 10 minutes drive from the airport. They offered to get a baggage trolley for me., so don’t worry about handling too much. Costco Gas Bar is right beside the airport for your return gas refill. The rental company stayed open longer for my arrival, but pre arrange this. When it is snowing they double check the car has a snowbrush inside. Try to avoid rocks on the windshield from Big trucks, they charge lots $$$ for chipped glass. .
