Vigo, in northwest Spain, is a popular city to visit for both locals and tourists. Found in the autonomous community of Galicia, it sits on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean and is only a few kilometres from the Spain-Portugal border.
The easiest way to explore Vigo is by car. Whether you want to see the sights of the city or take longer road trips further afield, the best way to do so is by hiring a car.
When driving in and around Vigo, and in Spain in general, there are several rules of the road which must be adhered to. Ensure that you familiarise yourself with these rules before setting off in your hire car and exploring the local area.
The historic Old Town is one of the main attractions in Vigo, characterised by its narrow streets and medieval Spanish vibe. There are also lots of quaint bars, cafes and restaurants within the Old Town where you can enjoy some authentic Spanish food and drink.
Monte do Castro is another major attraction in Vigo. It is a huge hill which overlooks the entire city and harbour, offering spectacular panoramic views over the city.
Samil Beach is a good beach to visit for families, especially in the summer months when the sea is warm enough to swim in.
For a more relaxed way to experience the city, walking along the Port of Vigo is a great way to spend an afternoon or evening, naturally stopping at several bars on the way for a few drinks and something to eat.
Several Portuguese cities can be reached from Vigo, making for a fun road trip, and to tick off two countries in less than a day. Braga (an hour), Porto (an hour and a half) and Lisbon (four and a half hours) are all doable in a day from Vigo.
Plenty of other Spanish destinations can also be reached in a day from Vigo: A Coruña is around an hour and a half away, while the central Spanish city of Valladolid is around four hours away.
