About Car Hire in Málaga Airport

Málaga is an ultimate feel-good destination. A getaway to the wonderful Costa del Sol, a historic city with stunning Moorish fortresses and scenic Old Town, a culinary stronghold offering a tasteful food proposition, this city sure knows how to impress and give you the best of times.

As Málaga Airport is right next to the beach towns Torremolinos, Benalmádena, and Fuengirola, the car hire is represented by many well-known brands such as Hertz, Avis, Sixt, Europcar. One of the main advantages of the airport is very close proximity to the city of Málaga and the famous Costa del Sol resorts which makes navigation very easy and stress-free.

Keep in mind that Málaga Airport is among the busiest air gates in Spain so the car hire offices can get pretty crowded after arriving flights. Avoid long waiting times by choosing your car company in advance and hunt for the cheapest options on holidaycars.com. Find the vehicle of your choice with the specifications that you need in advance.

Hiring a car in Málaga

As a rule in Spain, you find the highest concentration of car hire companies in and around the railway station within the city. Such local car hire suppliers as Prima and Larios can be found in the city centre. Going with independent car suppliers may give you better deals so explore your options beforehand.

Driving in Málaga

First of all, Málaga is not a big city so getting around by car here is generally very relaxing and hassle-free. However, this doesn't take away the necessity to be attentive at all times while on the road, carry your driving license with you, and park properly in specially designated areas. Spanish fine is the last thing you want while savouring the delights of Costa del Sol so use common sense while driving.

Chances are you will be using ultra-picturesque seaside N-340 road between the resort towns. Keep in mind that during the high season in summer it can be quite congested so plan your journeys accordingly. Centro Histórico in Málaga can be quite stressful for first-time in Spain drivers because of the confusing signage, windy roads, and limited parking so be aware of that too.

Some extra tips to help you when driving in Málaga:

Car Hire Agencies in Málaga

There are several areas in and around Málaga Airport where car hire offices are located. First comes the Baggage Claim area where you find such as Avis and Hertz, for example. If you pick up keys here you will then go to the airport parking and the vehicle will wait for you there. Also, you've got car hire suppliers in an off-airport area next to the terminals, there are both international and local companies like Helle Hollis, MalagaCar and Marbesol to choose from.

Helle Hollis, in particular, enjoys great reviews and an affordable fuel policy that many tourists noted when hiring with them. Still, the best way to find the deal just for you would be to use a comparison on holidaycars.com and avoid unpleasant surprises after arriving at Málaga Airport.

Top Road Trips from Málaga

Costa del Sol is all about scenic car trips, you're always accompanied by the sea panoramas as you go from Málaga to Estepona through Marbella. Stop for a quick dip at one of the numerous sandy beaches or give yourself the pleasure of sipping a cocktail in boardwalk bars. Visit Marbella for luxurious nightclubs and a pleasant Old Town with a distinct Andalusian flair.

Go in a different direction and you'll find a gorgeous rocky coast near Nerja that is famous for its picturesque coves with blue waters. Next to Nerja is a spectacular Sierras of Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Natural Park. Drive to the traditional mountain towns of Cómpeta and Frigiliana boasting authentic culture and bombastic natural views.

For a slightly longer journey, Granada is a Spanish jewel that can be easily reached from Málaga by car. In less than 2 hours you're getting a chance to see one of the most iconic ancient fortifications in Europe, the awe-inspiring Alhambra, a legendary Moorish castle towering over the city with snowy peaks of Sierra Nevada range in the distance.

Around town, very narrow streets are common. Get the smallest car you can tolerate. On the highways, lane discipline is important (thankfully). Stay out of the left lane unless you're actively overtaking. If you're in the left lane, overtake as quickly as you safely can, and keep an eye on your rearview mirror. If another car is coming up fast, get out of the left lane as soon as you safely can. Speed cameras are not super common but they are there, and they are not marked.

Check your distance from the hotel to Malaga and also local transport; a car was a necessity for us but we didn't know that until the day after so we lost out on some cash Malaga down to Gibraltar has some great destinations that a hire car will allow you to explore within a day; we went from Malaga to Gibraltar and then Portabanus (spelling). We followed that with trips to Torremelinos, Fuengirola and Marbella Get a car with satnav or android / apple compatible car to connect your devices to make it easier to get around; it's still tricky judging the turn offs! There are also a reasonable number of tolls so you can use the satnav to avoid tolls; it cost us 20 euro to get from Malaga to Gibraltar and then nothing coming back Make sure you have credit cards and drivers licences for all drivers

At Marbesa you need a car. There is only one supermarket open in the area: Eroski, quite ok. In dunas de Artola there are nice senderos. Go to the east from Urb Marbesa. You can also walk at the beach for many km. There are only few restaurants in the area. The asian restaurant at Eroski has very tast cousine; called Tasty corner. Nearby is also Camping Marbella Playa.

Very efficient at passport control on arrival. Baggage reclaim easy to find and baggage was quickly on the belt for passengers to find. Going home - leave plenty time to book in and get through security. They are very thorough! Lovely duty free shopping area with very friendly helpful assistants. Car return - signage confusing due to ongoing upgrade of building. Give yourself time. One employee collecting keys and paperwork - very courteous and helpful in directions to departures.

Malaga airport is over avarage, pretty large. With google map you can easily find car rental return. But even there is only one praying room area it was locked and it took about an hour to make it open, because the key was in customer service which was 2 floors up. Besides it is clean, have many duty free shops. For Tax free, do not forget to scan your bills before security control in the airport. If not it is also possibile to go back, scan and pass security again. Tax free part is working pretty good.

Be aware of the pick up spot for curtesy pick ups for rental cars before you hit the airport. If buying souvenirs or gifts you can rely on the shops at Malaga airport so factor in time to shop . Duty free did not have any menthol cigarettes on our trip so don’t rely on airport shopping for those. Food halls and cafes quite extensive. My wife’s mobility is poor and she was well catered for at the airport. The jet 2 baggage handling in particular from out experience was very efficient at Malaga airport.

Our flight got cancelled and the personnel was nice and understanding about it. My reservation was still honored even tho I was 12 hours late. The pick up was fast and hastle free. When I had my flight cancelled, I tryed 15 times to call but no one answered to explain the situation. Luckly I had a friend that went in person and that helped. The route to pick up the car, for us, was a bit unintuitive. Maybe the route could be better marked.

Local clothing brands such offer something different you can find at home to bring with you are memory and fashion addition to your wardrobe. No need to carry cash around as majority of places accept credit card. Always choose tapas instead of any international cuisine to experience real Spain.

Sometimes the smaller car hire firms are cheaper and provide a better service.

We have travelled to Malaga several times over the years. Airport is clean and has all facilities you need. Plenty of seating both in and amongst the travelers as well as being able to find a quiet corner. An area for improvement would be in the luggage security check area. I would suggest a visit to Gatwick to view their set up which has had major improvements and is now extremely efficient and means you can be through to lounge in no time at all.

Renting a car is a good idea, as long as you rent it with the right company. Then, take one day at a time to visit each of the city of your interest. The harbour area was nice and clean. Car is not a very good way to move in Malaga since the parking spots are not that easy to find. I recommend public transportation.
