About Car Hire at Tenerife South Airport

An island of perpetual spring, Tenerife may well be one of the most stunning places in the world. The landscapes here are awe-inspiring and diverse. In a spare of an hour, you can see golden beaches, volcanic craters, rugged mountains and cascaded coastline. It is home to UNESCO-protected colonial cities like La Laguna as well as extra-picturesque mountain villages like Masca.

There are two ways to get to Tenerife by plane. Tenerife South Airport is usually used by those who will proceed to the famous resort towns of Costa Adeje, Playa San Juan, or Los Gigantes. It is located right at the southern edge of the island and is easily accessible by the TF-1 highway. Another way is through the Tenerife North which is next to La Laguna and Santa Cruz. Although the Canary Islands are next to the African continent, the road infrastructure here is on par with mainland Spain so you can expect excellent conditions.

As for car hire, there is a wide range of companies to choose from. The natural attractions of the island and great weather all year round guarantee millions of tourists. That’s why all universally-known brands like Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Sixt are represented. You have a wide choice of vehicles and various hire options. Booking in advance gives you a chance to save time in the airport and find the cheapest hire.

Hiring a car in Tenerife

Quite typically for an island, Tenerife features loads of big and small car hire companies that can be found both in the Southern and the Northern cities. For instance, you can find many local offices in the popular resort Playa de las Américas. The general rule is to know what you're looking for in a car exactly and carefully study all the additional charges (like insurance, card deposit, damage waiver, GPS). Local companies tend to have cheaper prices but their fleet may be quite outdated.

Driving in Tenerife

As Tenerife terrain is very diverse, there are different driving conditions across the island. Highways and major roads are quite easy and very well maintained. However, if you decide to go to Teide volcano, or Masca village expect lots (we mean it) turns at high altitudes that can be quite a challenging drive for newcomers. Those visiting magnificent Anaga Natural Park in the North should be prepared by a narrow cliffside road with cars signalling each other and stopping next to a turn to let the incoming traffic go.

In the Southern resort towns parking can be a challenge during the high season. Nevertheless, except for extreme mountainous areas, Tenerife driving is generally comparable to the rest of Spain. Just prepare your trips beforehand, know your route and follow the road signs. And certainly avoid speeding at high-risk mountainous areas.

Some extra tips to help you when driving in Tenerife:

Car Hire Agencies in Tenerife South Airport

Hiring a car straight from Tenerife South Airport is a really straightforward process as there's only one terminal and you can easily find the right company. The majority of agencies have offices on both floors of the building ( except Europcar and Topcar that only have it on Floor -1). If you book in advance using holidaycars.com, it's possible to save time in the queues and have the keys straight away. Also, this way you will have a chance to thoroughly study the proposition and avoid hidden costs.

The bigger companies like Sixt and Hertz may offer more cars to choose from and more flexible options. CICAR is a great choice of a local supplier with many offices around Tenerife and a chance of leaving a car at the airport at a checkout. Be aware that costs for an automatic car in Spain are higher than the European average.

Top Road Trips from Tenerife

Few places in the world can compete with the grandeur of Tenerife. Being on the road here means driving through the incredible landscape that constantly changes bringing more and more awe-inspiring panoramas. In the South, driving to Spain's highest mountain Teide is an absolute must. Stop at many miradores (viewpoints) along the way.

Another fantastic journey filled with unrestricted beauty would be a trip to Masca and Garachico. Featuring some of the windiest roads on the planet and wonderful panoramas everywhere you look, it's the best thing to do while you're in Tenerife and looking for a natural escape.

Driving from Playa San Juan to Acantilados de Los Gigantes not only allows you to enjoy the coastal vistas but also take a dip next to Tenerife's most striking attraction, the mighty Los Gigantes cliffs.

Frequently asked questions about car rental Tenerife South airport

What is the best area to stay in Southern Tenerife?
As there are many destinations to choose from, the best would largely depend on what you're looking for in a holiday. For luxury and glitz choose Costa Adeje with its many five-star hotels. The problem with TFS is that you have to leave the terminal building when you arrive with your luggage and then you follow the signs to InterRent and they send you back to the terminal building because the office is inside the building. This should be explained on the voucher.

Make sure to hire from a company based at the airport - it's a complete pain to take the shuttle buses required for some companies. Go with full-to-full as the island is pretty small and it's hard to run down your tank unless you're planning to drive most days.

1. Value for money if you get a top class car in Tenerife - good attention 2. The road conditions are great - especially in highways. Get a fast car if you’re a speed devil 3. Get the full experience, rent the car, get to mount Teide and watch the sunrise. 4. The whole island is only 2 hours drive and take the shortcuts through the mountains and get the full scenarios. 5. Rent a car is definitely worth the value. 6. Public transport is good but better of to rent a car of take the taxi, if you want to get around and experience the beaches, The zoo and the waterpark

As always in Spain the road network is well maintained. Very easy way finding (due to the mountains, only few roads are there...) Mostly very careful drivers, probably british! I did bicycle the Teide mountain road, somewhat too busy with tourist cars, but still safe Cool/cloudy in the north, but more spanish and classy feel Warm and sunny in the south, but no flavor or atmosphere, puby and sangria bowls..

Budget's fleet is based just 5 minutes bus ride from the airport with a complimentary shuttle bus put on. I would encourage people not to be put of by this as the service and cars are excellent. Most of the budget team speak English and are very helpful. Time spent picking your care up is really quick and you are soon on your way. I always return fuel to the level you picked your car up at, as this avoids any unexpectedly high fuel bill at the end of your hire period. Cars are generally new and in good condition with a wide range of vehicles to choose from. I rented 6 times from Budget and never had a problem.

Can't imagine why anyone would go to the beach/water park with the mountains there.

The scenic island of Tenerife could be said to be on the crossroads of the historic trade route to the new world. Here you can find reflections of free enterprise among both the ancient tiered vineyards and the modern 24 hour tourist strip at Playa Las Americas. Sedately respectable colonial towns in the north of the island accompany the Barcelona like capital Santa Cruz which inherits most of the Spanish administration. To the north of these is the vertiginous rain-forested peninsular of Anaga, with winding roads to just a few isolated communities. Superb for hiking! Tenerife beaches are not world class, but certainly good enough for a days lounging, with adequate, if slightly aging, facilities and clientele. These are better appreciated in the south on the Costa Adeje with its generally warmer climate and resorts. There are also some good beaches at Puerto Cruz and also Playa de las Teresitas although here you have to look at some oil stations drilling just offshore. The east coast is mainly rocky but Candelaria has some nice restaurants for seafood. In the middle of the settled Spanish north of the island and the package holiday south, is a volcanic desert which includes 2.3 mile high mount Teide. This sterile wilderness stunningly contrasts the other aspects of the island and sets a fascinating geological backdrop above the clouds. Pristine pine forests can be found on some of its lower slopes which can be explored on a trail network.

I spent 10 days traveling across Tenerifa. My best suggestions: Masca, Barranco de Infierno, mountains around Teide , Anaga mountains, Whales ( traveled from LosGigantos Port) , Jungle Park what is more quiet then Loro Park ( also interesting) , Garachico- "pools" .

Good warm and dry weather in the Southern part of island, unlike the Northern areas where winds and rains can be heavy and much more frequent. Very competitive prices in most areas and fields, e.g. food, restaurants etc. (except real estate ways too inflated for such remote place)

See the beaches and the Teide mountain. It's easy to get around Tenerife if you drive on the right side of the road. People are friendly and helpful.

Avoid the touristy beaches and explore the island by car. Visit the top of the mountain, but don't forget to take a winter coat. Take a small sailing boat to see dolphins and whales. We used big smile luxury charters, which was great!

Mount Teide, Loro Parque and Pyramids of Guanmar. And generally the mountainous nature is fantastic, and if you are fit to walk: Numerous possibilities! I will also recommend the gourmet restaurant El Rincon de Juan Carlos in Los Gigantes. Fantastic food for special occasions!
