About Car Hire at Faro Airport

The Algarve is known for its rugged caves and cliffs, gold sand beaches, turquoise waters, and laid back vibe. It’s become one of Europe’s top holiday destinations, and for good reason. The capital of the region, Faro, has a distinctly Portuguese feel. The city is bursting with history and culture, and the perfect place to start your Portuguese adventure before heading further south towards the beach towns.

The region’s only airport is Faro Airport, which is very well connected to the rest of the Algarve and just a short drive to the centre of Faro. The Algarve has so much to offer, including picturesque cities and historical sites, that hiring a car is a great way to get around and see it all. At Faro Airport, you’ll find plenty of globally recognised car hire firms. There’s loads to choose from, including Enterprise, Avis, Europcar, Hertz, National, and SixT. Popular on a budget, but still widely recognised, car hire companies are available too, including Alamo and Budget. Alternatively, you could opt for a local and smaller Portuguese car hire company. These are typically priced at much lower than multinational agencies and while they operate out of the terminal, they don’t have a designated desk. Brands like Guerin, Autorent, Visacar, Airauto, and Luzcar, are just some examples of the Portuguese suppliers available.

Hiring a car in Faro

Given the vast selection of car hire choices at Faro Airport, we think that’s the best place to find a hire car. That’s where you’ll find most of the big, global names. To explore even more local, Portuguese car hire companies, there are several located in the city. Given that hiring a car at the airport tends to come with extra charges, finding a car in the city might be more preferable for those on a budget. Locally owned Enjoy Car Hire Faro is just a bit further than the airport, and offers great deals on a wide range of cars. When you get into Faro, you’ll also find Drive4Miles in the city centre.

Driving in Faro

Driving around this beautiful city is relatively quiet compared to larger cities in Portugal, like Lisbon or Porto. With low levels of traffic, smooth roads, and clear signage, driving around Faro is a breeze. Despite the dramatic and rugged landscape, the Algarve roads are relatively smooth, too. You might find windy, narrow, unkept roads in rural areas, but that’s all part of the fun. Just make sure to slow down around these bits. There’s nothing like driving down the open road, windows down, with the Atlantic Ocean to your side.

Tips for driving in Faro

Top road trips in Faro

Road tripping around the Algarve is the best way to explore the region. While there isn’t designated road trip routes, we think you can comfortably see it all in 7 days. Glide through sleepy fishing villages and surfer towns, stopping off at one of the regions 150 beaches and exploring the golden limestone caves. Wander around the picturesque village of Ponta Ruiva, go surfing in Sagres, bar-hop in the lively Albuferia. Explore rural towns with minimal tourist influence, like São Brás de Alportel.

If a 7 day road trip isn’t up your street, you can take day trips to visit the area’s beaches, surfing hotspots, and historical attractions with Faro as your base. You could even drive to Spain and back within a day! The beautiful, vibrant city of Seville is just a two hour drive away. Spend the day marvelling at the unique architecture and the enchanting flamenco dancers. It's a special city, well worth the visit.

If you’re using Faro as your base while you explore the Algarve, or want to stay here for a few nights, then downtown is the best bet. The streets are paved in the beautiful Portuguese calçada style, and you’ll find plenty of trendy cafes, eateries, and bars. I think that an information booth directly in front of the arrival doors would be useful. When we arrived we had to hunt around for a representative to guide us to our car rental booth. After a long flight one doesn't want to spend much time searching for help. When I did find help they seemed to be guessing as to where we should go. I then had to leave the arrival area to investigate where I was going. When I found the information I needed and tried to get back to arrivals where my wife and cousin were the security questioned me as to where I was going. I explained the situation and he let me through. It wasn't a warm and welcoming feeling which a traveller is always hoping for.

Masterkings is in P4, not with the other rental car offices! It is in a little white shed in the parking lot - look for the shed. Once there, its a piece of cake to get the car and unlike other rental car agencies, Masterkings doesn't do any hard selling, even letting you bring back the car with just a quarter tank of gas! I would recommend using them if you are in Portugal.

Rent at the actual airport so no heaving heavy cases to go offsite. Good signage to help you around the airport. Personable and helpful staff and if you explain your plans to those at the rental counter they will make suggestions to help your trip be more enjoyable. Know that there is free parking at most beaches. Do not go into the city centrum with car. It is very narrow, lots of possibilities to scratch the car. The farther to west, the colder the water. You can take the car up to Sintra, if there are more people in the car, it's worth to skip the bus

If they're busy the driver might be taken first, but don't worry, they'll collect the rest of the family on the next run! - make sure you have all the required documentation with you: drivers license, booking information and a credit card with enough balance left!! Not everyone did when we were there so they didn't get to drive away! - Pin the location of the Surprice Offices before you take your car. You'll need to return the car there before you fly. - Fill the car up with a quarter tank of fuel before returning. - Accept a lift back to the airport from the Surprise minibus.

Do use Firelfy by just walking from terminal building to their office. Where possible they will keep your info on record which avoids re-typing it all on arrival. Do check for damage but they have never ripped me off on any dents or scratches that I hadnt spotted when collecting the car. On returning drop your passengers and luggage at airport terminal and you can walk back after dropping the car. Always worth discussing the options of mileage and motorway tariff if you think you will need it. They will normally offer an upgrade and rate at the desk which is reasonable depending upon what you require and number of people etc.

Shop around for the best car rental rate using a search site like Holidaycars.com Make sure that you always have the same currency setting if you use more than one search site. I like to use Euros since that is the most common currency. Check how the cost per day changes with the number of days as it can increase dramatically once you get past 31 days or sometimes even just 28 days. To get around this limitation, you can use multiple bookings. So a 60 day rental could be made by combining two 30 day bookings. Compare the rates between different rental agencies for addons such as the toll transponder and additional drivers. Check the fuel return policies of the different rental agencies: Out with full tank/ return full tank is best, but return with same tank is also good. Stay away from fuel pre-purchase arrangements. If you will be returning to a different location than where you started and you have a long rental, It could be better to start with a short rental (one or two days) with the rental agency that has the lowest different drop off location charge and then switch to the rental agency with the lowest daily rental charge. Rent a car with standard transmission. The rates are much lower and the selection of available cars is much better for manual transmission. If you don't know how to drive a manual transmission, get some lessons at a local driving school before you rent. Finally, if you expect to do a lot of driving, consider renting a diesel.

Give your fellow passengers respect and courtesy, they will repay in kind. and finally, enjoy the experience, you have paid for it!

we have used faro airport for some 30 years, each time there has been some improvement to the layout,it is now one of the best places to fly in and out of. there is more than enough things to do if you are delayed, and more food outlets each time we have gone through this airport.

Use the toll device they put in the car and take the toll roads. Your trip will be much more pleasant if you aren't backed up in traffic.

My wife being of limited mobility - we found that the walk from drop off to Airport itself was more than a little difficult - it's a very long walk for someone with a disability & whilst I appreciate that there is a charge for vehicles to drop off closer to the entrance, I for one would be more than happy to meet this payment.

Hey - it's an airport! Clean, tidy and well managed. Don't vote for Brexit and you'll probably have less queues! Get a trolley if you're hiring a car - it's a walk to the car check ins Nothing more to say - good luck with the competition

Be ahead of time to Faro Airport. The departure area can be very busy at any time, although security is automatized you must expect long waiting lines to get through. At least 1h 30 ahead if flight. If you have an animal or special luggadge I also recommend being 2 hours ahed of light. Many cheap hotel sourround the airport for those who fly early and want to wake up at last minute Airport is newly renewed, very modern and many services available. Do not forget to get a coffee as soon you exit arrivals. As in Italy and Portugal are the only countries where proper expresso Arabica coffee is served.

Long walk to Car Park 4. Once there the Auto Rent minivan came quickly. There was only us in it. Office not far from the terminal. Quick service at the pick-up desk. A supermarket is round the corner in case you want to get supplies there and then! Some local cafes too for food and drinks.

Download Googlemaps offline for the area you're visiting before you leave home. Identify toll roads by road number in advance and plan you're route to avoid them. Look up Airbnb or similar while you're on holiday if you'd like to check out different/better located apartments/hotels etc in the area for your next stay. Visit them while you're there so you see exactly what you'd be getting.

My best travel tips are: Sao Vicente, Rio Alvor (Quinta da Rocha), the golfcourse near Pera/Albufeira, Ludo and the golfcourse Quinta do Lago, Santa Luzia/Barril, Sopursal and the Island of Tavira, Castro Marim in The Algarve. And of course Mertola in Alentejo. I am a birdwatcher and I do visit these places and areas, looking for birds. In 6 days travelling around, I did see 110 species of birds, which is very good!

I just love the western part of Algarve with all the cliffs and narrow beaches mixed with wide ones. Lots of small picturesque towns and villages. A great place for active people like golfers, or people just like me, who want to feel the native nature and traditional way of living in all the small fishing villages. A nice place to grew older in for grown up people. I did so for the last six years with great assist of HolidayCars.com whom frequently assisted me with car rentals enabling me to easily move around achieving new great Algarvean experiences!

The old town is worth a visit. Go up the tower by the cathedral(Se) and you get a good view of Faro and the airport and beaches. Faro is well located for travel. you can get a train to either Villa Real do Santo Antonio and a ferry across to Spain or, in the other direction, to Lisbon and beyond to Porto at reasonable fares. The church of bones(Capella dos Ossos) in Faro is a bit macabre but worth a visit.
