Most people stay in their resorts and go out by boat, but if you rent a car you’ll see another Mauritius. The people are very friendly. We hired a special car (an open buggy in flaming red) and through every village kids and elderly waved at us when we passed by. We went to public beaches where large families ate and played petanque (a french custom). That car made our holiday unforgettable.

Mauritius is a paradise on Earth. Brace yourself for the 2 hours border control queue though. Once you're through that, you'll have access to all the wonders of the island. I can guarantee that you won't see all of them in a week's vacation. Staying on the west coast gives you heart melting sunsets, while the east is for rural experience. The north is for party animals, the south for posh lovers. If you're up for hiking, hire one of the guides as the trails are not well signed and you can easily get lost. Make sure you visit one of the public beaches on a Sunday and mingle with the locals, they're all super nice people. You can try the local food stands, everything is safe to consume for western stomach. Although the cities are not as well developed as a modern western one, they have hidden colonial treasures in every other corner. Open your eyes and see those gems. Whatever your program is, do give yourself a few days to just get roasted on the sun under the palms. You'll definitely feel you're in one if them kitchy posters. If you've rented your car from the airport and staying in the north, note that the last gas station is about 20km from the airport. Make sure you fill your car there to avoid a detour before you drop your car. Leave 3 hours at the airport as it can get really busy.

Beautiful beaches are private at 5 star hotels, public ones are mostly narrow, overcrowded with local people and with no palms; I recommend LeMourne, beaches there as well as climbing the mountain.
