I just love the western part of Algarve with all the cliffs and narrow beaches mixed with wide ones. Lots of small picturesque towns and villages. A great place for active people like golfers, or people just like me, who want to feel the native nature and traditional way of living in all the small fishing villages. A nice place to grew older in for grown up people. I did so for the last six years with great assist of HolidayCars.com whom frequently assisted me with car rentals enabling me to easily move around achieving new great Algarvean experiences!

We were staying at Praia da Rocha and only flew into Faro. But the entire areas of the Algarve, east and west of Faro are stunning with excellent restaurants and hotels. Nice and quiet in January and February. Highly recommended.

The old town is worth a visit. Go up the tower by the cathedral(Se) and you get a good view of Faro and the airport and beaches. Faro is well located for travel. you can get a train to either Villa Real do Santo Antonio and a ferry across to Spain or, in the other direction, to Lisbon and beyond to Porto at reasonable fares. The church of bones(Capella dos Ossos) in Faro is a bit macabre but worth a visit.

Definitely worth exploring further along the coast and hiring bikes for a cycle around Formosa. Kids loved Aquashow water park that has added a few more slides, beach and restaurants in Quinta do Lago, Dunas Douradas are great, although the beach restaurants can be a little pricey for lunch but the views are well worth it
