The city is bursting with old-world opulence and a vibrant nightlife - the mix of the French culture with the Mediterranean sun make it unlike anywhere else.

The city has its own airport, Nice Airport, which is just 15 minutes by car from the centre. A tram could take you into Nice, but the best way to get around is by car. The French Riviera has so many towns, villages, beaches, and private coves dotted around, and hiring a car means you can easily see it all. At Nice Airport, there are several globally recognised car hire agencies to choose from. You’ll spot Hertz, Enterprise, SixT, Avis, Europcar, and more. It’s no secret that Nice can be pricey, so if you’re looking for something lighter on the wallet, agencies like CarJet and Budget offer a cheaper option. Alternatively, you could be looking to turn on the glamour. It is Nice, after all. The airport has plenty of luxury car options for higher budgets. FindUrCars, Luxury & Services Rent, Olinid Luxury Car Rentals, are all smaller than the big names, but with many high class cars to choose from.

Hiring a car in Nice

Hiring a car at airports tend to come with additional fees. If you want to avoid that, there’s even more option for hiring a car when you head to the city. Right in the city centre, close to the Nice-Ville train station, you’ll find a similar collection of big-name car hire agencies. They’re all in the same area, so you can easily shop around for the best deal. Or, treat yourself to something special. Head to the promenade for a host of specialist, luxury car hire companies. Particularly Rent A Classic Car, which does that it says on the tin. Glide through the French Riviera behind the wheel of a Porsche, Mustang, or a Cadillac. Vintage glamour at its best. You’ll also find Europe Luxury Cars and Elite Rent-a-car nearby, where you can hire something modern and sleek, like a Maserati or a Ferrari.

Driving in Nice

If you can get used to its crisscrossed roads, detours, and local drivers, then you’ll enjoy driving in Nice. Its roads are narrow and windy, particularly downtown. Plus, like any big city, there’s going to be traffic. That’s unavoidable. It’s a popular destination so pedestrians will be on the roads, just watch out for them. The real draw to driving in Nice is the accessibility to the rest of the French Riviera. Driving the Corniches is a pleasure - smooth roads hug the coast with plenty of places to stop on the way.

Don't be afraid to ask, politely; if staff speak your language. But do it with a smile. Even if they can, still try to speak at least some French. It is just common courtesy. If they do speak your language, remember for them it is still foreign, so speak slowly, clearly and use easy sentences. The airport is easy to navigate, car rental very easy to find. One really good thing is Nice airport is smaller, than other International airports, so the queues are much smaller, and the staff seem less stressed!

Even though we had a car we stayed near the Menton train station to easily get to Cannes and Monaco which are easy to walk and see sites. We also stayed in Tourtour at the Bastide de Tourtour where part of the film ‘The Day of the Jackal’ was made. The views here are great. Then on to Lorgues to dine at Chez Bruno the one star truffle emporium of the South of France. The boiled potato with a truffle cream sauce is worth the trip. The to Bonnieux, Cucaron and Gordes to see sites where a ‘Good Year’ was filmed. Actually tasted some CP wine and bought a bottle home. One day left in Nice in the old city— plenty of history and Italian food.

Nice is a wonderful town, particularly the "old town" where there is a myriad of tiny streets, filled with interesting shops selling an infinite variety of local produce and artworks in particular. Of course, Nice Airport is the gateway for all the other magical towns and villages dotted along the Cote d'Azur, including Antibes, Cannes, Cap d'Antibes, and in the other direction, the village of Eze, Villefranche sur Mer, Beaulieu sur Mer, Menton and of course, the Principality of Monaco. A fascinating region with breathtaking views, wonderful local food and culture, and of course, beautiful weather most of the year. Certainly worth more than a short visit.

Go to the Alpes - Auron or Isola 2000 over the day for some skiing just 1.5 hour from Nice, be back in the evening and have a dinner by the sea in Nice, Antibes, Cannes or just have some wine and relax. Second day play golf at Saint Donat Close to Cannes, a nice and challenging golf cours. In the summer time go to the Esterel Mountains/area, nice and calm beaches. Do not miss PLage Mala in C'ap Dail (close to Monaco). Do not forget to by local fruits and vegetables on the daily markets in the region!

Nice is a beautiful cosmopolitan city with many high quality restaurants and hotels. The Hotel Negresco on the sea front is very high quality and worth seeing, even if it is too expensive for many to stay there. There are many other good reasonable cost alternatives. The harbour is very attractive and close to the town of Villefranche where historic meetings between the royalty of Savoie and of France met in former centuries. The catacombs in Villefranche are very interesting, attractive and filled with appealing shops. The art museum in Cimier houses an excellent collection of paintings by Chagall and Matisse. North of Nice, there is an amazing Chapel called Notre Dame des Fontaines where a 15th Century artist painted outstanding frescos which display colours as vibrant as the day that they were painted. West of Nice, 20 kilometres or so away lie the historic and elegant cities of Antibes and Cannes. Both of these have links with Napoleon and the village of Golf Juan nearby was the site of his landing when he escaped from Elba in 1814. The attractive ancient walled town of Mougins, which resisted the Saracens centuries ago, lies very close nearby and has excellent restaurants. Picasso live here during World War 2. The walled town of Vence lies about 30 kilomtres inland and contains a spectacular chapel decorated by Matisse. Further west, one comes to the 12th Century Cistercian abbey of Le Thoronet which has austere grandeur with amazing acoustics of a 14 second echo.

Regarding car hire, the cheapest, using the same filters, US not necessarily the best. I'm travelling to Nice again on Tuesday and, because of the queues, will not be using Keddy. I have no problem with the staff, who were courteous and professional, but queuing for more than an hour is an experiance not (knowingly) to be repeated. Budget are €1 more than Keddy and last week, they had no queue.
