Long walk to Car Park 4. Once there the Auto Rent minivan came quickly. There was only us in it. Office not far from the terminal. Quick service at the pick-up desk. A supermarket is round the corner in case you want to get supplies there and then! Some local cafes too for food and drinks.

Download Googlemaps offline for the area you're visiting before you leave home. Identify toll roads by road number in advance and plan you're route to avoid them. Look up Airbnb or similar while you're on holiday if you'd like to check out different/better located apartments/hotels etc in the area for your next stay. Visit them while you're there so you see exactly what you'd be getting.

My best travel tips are: Sao Vicente, Rio Alvor (Quinta da Rocha), the golfcourse near Pera/Albufeira, Ludo and the golfcourse Quinta do Lago, Santa Luzia/Barril, Sopursal and the Island of Tavira, Castro Marim in The Algarve. And of course Mertola in Alentejo. I am a birdwatcher and I do visit these places and areas, looking for birds. In 6 days travelling around, I did see 110 species of birds, which is very good!

Do not get bullied into over the counter additional insurance. Do take pictures of the car scratches, etc before signing. You may need this evidence if they accuse you of damage later which was already on the car

I just love the western part of Algarve with all the cliffs and narrow beaches mixed with wide ones. Lots of small picturesque towns and villages. A great place for active people like golfers, or people just like me, who want to feel the native nature and traditional way of living in all the small fishing villages. A nice place to grew older in for grown up people. I did so for the last six years with great assist of HolidayCars.com whom frequently assisted me with car rentals enabling me to easily move around achieving new great Algarvean experiences!

The old town is worth a visit. Go up the tower by the cathedral(Se) and you get a good view of Faro and the airport and beaches. Faro is well located for travel. you can get a train to either Villa Real do Santo Antonio and a ferry across to Spain or, in the other direction, to Lisbon and beyond to Porto at reasonable fares. The church of bones(Capella dos Ossos) in Faro is a bit macabre but worth a visit.

Definitely worth exploring further along the coast and hiring bikes for a cycle around Formosa. Kids loved Aquashow water park that has added a few more slides, beach and restaurants in Quinta do Lago, Dunas Douradas are great, although the beach restaurants can be a little pricey for lunch but the views are well worth it

When in Algarve, rent a car at HolidayCars - because they have best prices - for a week and drive through the whole coast from the Southiest point St.Vincent with huge cliffs at the sea, then Lagos; walk along the strand promenade, come to the old harbour in Portimão and try some fantastic fish restaurants, stay overnight in Albufeira at "Falesia Hotel - Adults Only" and visit their Casino. Then visit the "Disneyland of Algarve" VILA MOURA, maybe playing golf there. Have a lunch in Alvor in some of the riverfront restaurants. Finally, visit the great Camping of Olhão, where you meet lots of people from the whole Europe and learn about camping as lifestyle by talking with some veterans there. Finally, leave your car back at HolidayCars and let their shuttle bus take you back at the Airport of Faro, free of charge.
