Since the renovation, the airport is now almost flawless. The only complaint is that most car rental agencies are either in car park 4 (a longish walk) or offsite. This can lead to delays on pick-up and drop-off of 30 minutes or more.

Always choose car rental companies that have a "Full-to-Full" fuel policy, as that way you don't accidentally spend lots of money on extra fuel that goes towards the car company. Pine Cliffs Resort is the best hotel and resort in the Algarve and one of the best in the world. Well worth a visit. Faro airport is clean and queues are short. Security check-in is quick and easy. I flew TAP Portugal and that is the national airline - it's legroom is huge and they are very comfortable flights.

Do use Firelfy by just walking from terminal building to their office. Where possible they will keep your info on record which avoids re-typing it all on arrival. Do check for damage but they have never ripped me off on any dents or scratches that I hadnt spotted when collecting the car. On returning drop your passengers and luggage at airport terminal and you can walk back after dropping the car. Always worth discussing the options of mileage and motorway tariff if you think you will need it. They will normally offer an upgrade and rate at the desk which is reasonable depending upon what you require and number of people etc.

There are wonderful marinas where you can hire boats and wooded forests which can be explored by segway. It is the perfect destination that mixes nature with a fun and fast paced nightlife.

Shop around for the best car rental rate using a search site like Holidaycars.com Make sure that you always have the same currency setting if you use more than one search site. I like to use Euros since that is the most common currency. Check how the cost per day changes with the number of days as it can increase dramatically once you get past 31 days or sometimes even just 28 days. To get around this limitation, you can use multiple bookings. So a 60 day rental could be made by combining two 30 day bookings. Compare the rates between different rental agencies for addons such as the toll transponder and additional drivers. Check the fuel return policies of the different rental agencies: Out with full tank/ return full tank is best, but return with same tank is also good. Stay away from fuel pre-purchase arrangements. If you will be returning to a different location than where you started and you have a long rental, It could be better to start with a short rental (one or two days) with the rental agency that has the lowest different drop off location charge and then switch to the rental agency with the lowest daily rental charge. Rent a car with standard transmission. The rates are much lower and the selection of available cars is much better for manual transmission. If you don't know how to drive a manual transmission, get some lessons at a local driving school before you rent. Finally, if you expect to do a lot of driving, consider renting a diesel.

Coffee is very expensive and the traditional pastal de nata (like custard tarts) are also expensive. Tip take your own cake and splash out on a coffee. We paid 11euros. It’ll feel awful though after the cheaper prices in Portugal. Clean. Good loos. No water fountain that I could find. Friendly staff. Good service everywhere.

1.Save yourself money by not using toll roads. 2. N125 takes a bit longer but enjoy the scenery. 3. Lots of great restaurants to choose from. Our favourites this trip were Braganca Mar in Vilamoura and Casa Pituxa near Vale Do Lobo. 4. Dover Sole au meuniere at Braganca was the stand out meal of the holiday. 5 If golfing think about hiring electric trolleys from Blue Sky Rental as much better value then hiring buggies for each round and you get more exercise! 6. Stayed in hotel this trip but if it's a family holiday can highly recommend Villaplus for a Villa based holiday and pick up fresh fish from Quartera market early morning for great value.

Be patient with staff - some things they cannot control. Have a relaxed attitude when travelling, it will reduce your stress levels. Make sure you understand the rules of the airline you are using, it could save futile arguments. Take precautions with your valuables. Have passports, boarding passes, wallets, book, phone etc all in a pre-determined position, and return them to that position after use. Give your fellow passengers respect and courtesy, they will repay in kind. and finally, enjoy the experience, you have paid for it!

Faro is a nice, modern, friendly and convenient airport. It is a short drive from several resorts nearby. The check-in went smoothly with plenty of available desks. Clearing security was also quick and problem-free. The selection of casual restaurants in the departure lounge were very good. The airport could benefit from a table service restaurant for travellers eating their evening meal there. The range of shops was good. There were plenty of seats in the departure lounge. The cleanliness of the toilets needs to be significantly improved - they smelled strongly of urine.

If staying in the Algarve region a visit to Silves is thoroughly recommended. Other places of interest are Loule and Tavira. If you like beaches then the one at Falesia is enormous and has some very striking red coloured cliffs. The roads are in general much quieter than the UK and Spain and no-one seems to be in too much of a rush.

Be ahead of time to Faro Airport. The departure area can be very busy at any time, although security is automatized you must expect long waiting lines to get through. At least 1h 30 ahead if flight. If you have an animal or special luggadge I also recommend being 2 hours ahed of light. Many cheap hotel sourround the airport for those who fly early and want to wake up at last minute Airport is newly renewed, very modern and many services available. Do not forget to get a coffee as soon you exit arrivals. As in Italy and Portugal are the only countries where proper expresso Arabica coffee is served.
