Simple small airport. Very quick baggage process. Limited food options when travelling home but unsurprising given the size of the airport - just take some snacks. Basic cafe food can be bought in the airport.

Sofia airport is divided into 2 terminals which are 2KM away from each other. When booking a car, make sure your rental company is at the terminal that your flight lands. There is a free shuttle bus that passes every 30 mins that connects the 2 terminals. Last bus leaves at 23:00, after that you'll have to take a taxi. Even if an EU passport holder, be prepared to go through identity check when you land. Most airport staff speak good enough English.

Read everything to do with the car rental double check terms and conditions and Mileage etc and at the minute I would only by the basic car online in uk and not purchase any insurance until go out to Bulgaria that way you definately only pay once. I believe this to be happening to a lot of customers I have met at least four on my two previous trips.

Plenty of seating when waiting for check-in. Food and drink quite a lot more expensive than out and about on Bulgaria. But, good prices in the duty free. Also reasonably priced cafe available after going through security. Not easy to find drinking water source after security - worth asking for directions. Fairly short walks to gates in terminal 2.

Very easy to navigate through. The signage for the rental cars return is confusing. I resorted to parking in front the building. Fortunately the rental company stuff took over immediately. No hastles after all. The subway is extremely convenient too. It links the airport directly to the railway and the central bus station. Plenty of taxis around too, though some drivers take advantage of their customers - so be careful. The taxis can't load much luggage as most have LPG bottle in boot already.

I would suggest book well in advance, pay in advance if you can. Get yourslef the full insurance as well, as roads in Bulgaria can be challenging. Don’t expect too much of the airport as it is a small one. In general do not expect much of the service in the country - not their strength. Not everyone speaks Emglish there especially when you go outside of the capital. Menues of the restaurants also can be a bit off as the translation could be rather inaccurate. I would ask for tips from peiple that has been there already or are from Bulgaria. And do not trust all the taxi companies - you might pay more than you should!

Make sure that you have an up to date sat nav. Keep a good distance from te car in front. Warm the car up well inside if in snowy winter conditions.

If you use the local taxi, ensure he switches the meter on or stop the vehicle and exit the car. There is also a restaurant called "Happy Grill" food is very good.
