Good airport to rent a car, despite of ZTL zones in Italy it is still convenient and cheaper to rent a car, and you can park the car just outside ZTL zones. Try to rent smaller cars, as it will be more convenient to drive on the cities.

Car is recommended if you wish to travel outside Rome or in outskirts. Within the city, perhaps the subway may be more advisable.

Don't go into Naples or Rome by car - find a parking spot outside the town centre. Try to avoid Fridays afternoon out of Rome. When in Rome - spend 2-3 days Try Spaghetti a vongole - pasta with clams - really good.

Using a GPS is a good idea but it may not work as well as it does in Canada. It is always good to have a road map for reference. Diving in the Italian countryside is fabulous.

Rome is an absolutely amazing city. It has food, culture, history, ice cream, fashion, the Vatican, architecture, you name it. However the organization, traffic and cleanlinesses of the city is a bit low standard unfortunately. Otherwise the city would be probably the most amazing city in the world.
