The line for Vatican isn't too long if you wait but the guided tours is probably a good idea. The line took us about 30 minutes in the morning but there is no wait by late afternoon. Rome is filled with many exciting activities and places so make sure you spend weeks here! We made the mistake of spending a few days but it was still fun.

taxi in Italy are ridiculously expensive. rent a car immediately from the airport locations one taxi ride was worth more than the rental of the car for a week

A little confusion finding the rental area, but I'll attest that to an 8 hour flight and some grogginess upon debarking. Just find the the little sign of the car with the keys over it and follow that. Was a little jammed in the rental area. All rental agencies lined up in a circle. A bit crowded getting to the back where Hertz was. The airport is really easy to get in and out off. You exit on a direct road into Rome. If you're heading North, like we did, it's a simple ramp to the SS1/E80.

Rome is a great city of course. Even the beach isn't too far away which we enjoyed at Lido di Ostia. We walked up all the steps up the cupola of St. Peter's Basilica for amazing views of Rome and enjoyed wandering round the Pedestrianised roads in the centre

Start your search for a car as early as possible to get a good price. Make sure you have the dates right and make sure your credit card will cover you in Italy. If you don't have an international drivers licence you should get one as you can't get a card in Italy without one. Plan your route in advance. Learn a few phrases in the language so you can get what you need, although most people do speak English. Use your phone navigation system, particularly when returning to Rome. It is not that easy to return compared to leaving.

I would definitely recommend Europcar Fiumicino. The staff was very helpful and made the experience positive for the most part. I would recommend picking up & dropping the car off at the airport. It was very convenient and easy to do. I brought the car back with a full tank of diesel (your best option). However, I was still charged for the full tank option. Not sure what happened there. Anyhow, I was happy with the service and hopefully Europcar Rome Fiumicino will adjust my overall charges. I will definitely be renting from your company next time I'm visiting Rome. Thank-You Europcar Italy!!

Good airport to rent a car, despite of ZTL zones in Italy it is still convenient and cheaper to rent a car, and you can park the car just outside ZTL zones. Try to rent smaller cars, as it will be more convenient to drive on the cities.

Rome is an absolutely amazing city. It has food, culture, history, ice cream, fashion, the Vatican, architecture, you name it. However the organization, traffic and cleanlinesses of the city is a bit low standard unfortunately. Otherwise the city would be probably the most amazing city in the world.
