About Car Rental at Rome Airport

Rome-Fiumicino Airport, also known as Leonardo DaVinci International Airport, is Italy's main airport, serving more than 40 million passengers each year. The airport is located in Fiumicino, only about 35 kilometres from the historic centre of Rome, so it is the one chosen by those who want to visit the wonderful city. This proximity makes it ideal for those who prefer to rent a car at the airport, and start their trip freely through Italy from the beginning.

You have over 14 car rental agencies to choose from at the airport. You have the multinational ones such as Alamo, Enterprise and Sixt, and other ones that are exclusive from Italy such as Maggiore, Noleggiare and Sicily by Car.

In all of them, you will have an unlimited miles service so you can take the rented car all over Italy without any problem.

Downtown Car Rental at Rome

The prices to rent a car at the airport are usually higher since tourist and international prices are handled, but if you take the time to wait and rent the car in downtown Rome, then you can get great deals and better service.

Here you will find the same companies that are at the airport, as well as a large number of local agencies. Something good about renting those that are also at the airport is that sometimes they let you return the car at the airport, so you can enjoy it throughout your trip. However, local agencies are usually cheaper than the others.

At the end of the day, the important thing is that you choose the one you feel most comfortable with. In both, you will find a great variety of cars and similar benefits.

Driving in Rome

Driving in Rome is quite easy, the only drawback that you can find is in the roundabouts, but if you are patient then you will not have any problem.

Something that you should carry with you all the time while driving is your driver's license and the proof that your car is rented, since otherwise you will be fined and you will also have to pay extra money to the car rental agency (in most of the cases), but having those documents with you will avoid all the problem.

Some extra tips are:

Car Rental Agencies in Rome

In addition to the agencies already mentioned, other car rental companies undoubtedly get all the praise. Here I will name two that stand out above the rest since they have great reviews, the greatest amount of benefits and means of payment, and a large fleet of cars from which you can choose.

Crent Roma, belonging to Crent SRL, is one of the agencies that stand out above the rest. Something that makes it unique is its wide variety of vehicles available to subtract, from minivans to SUVs, small cars for couples, and even scooters for those who want to experience an authentic Italian experience.

The other is Noleggio Auto di Lusso, which is from Primerent, an exclusive car rental company. What makes it stand out is that you can rent ordinary cars, or even luxury cars to visit Rome in style. They recently added electric cars from different companies to their fleet, from Tesla to Porsche, Audi and Jaguar. So if you want to feel comfortable and drive a luxury car, now you can also do it in a car that takes care of the environment and will save you money on gas.

Top Road Trips from Rome

Only in the city of Rome, you will find hundreds of destinations to visit that you cannot miss, and that going by car will be much easier for you to reach all of them.

If you go to Rome you must visit the Roman Colosseum, The Pantheon of Rome, the Trevi Fountain, as well as the different imposing Churches that fill the city of Rome with a unique energy.

If you travel early, you can also get away from Rome and take a road trip to other parts of Italy. The other major city that is closer is Naples, and you can reach it in 2 hours. The other big cities like Milan, Venice and Genoa are trips that can take you from 5 to 7 hours, but if you like to drive and have the time you should definitely do it.

Frequently asked questions about car rental Rome Fiumicino airport

What's the best area to stay in Rome?
The best area to stay in Rome is the historic centre or downtown Rome since there is a wide variety of hotels to choose from, from the most luxurious to hostels for backpackers, so you will easily find one that suits your needs.
What is the cheapest time to go to Rome?
If you avoid different holidays such as Christmas, Easter, among others, then the prices are mostly the same. September and October are usually a little cheaper since they are low tourist seasons and there aren't many holidays.
What is the best time to go to Rome?
The best months to travel to Rome are April, May, September and October. What these months have in common is that the climate is mild, so you will not have an oppressive heat or a winter cold that makes you want to stay in your bed. This is mainly because in summer you do not have many places to cool off, and the queues to see the monuments and different historical places are done under the full ray of the sun.
Can you get around Rome without a car?
Of course, although you will not have the same freedoms as if you make the trip with a rental car, you can also get to different places. Public transport works wonders, and the airport offers the Leonardo Express service, which is a train that takes you from the airport to Rome's Termini station.

Stay close to the Coliseum, and by close I mean a block walking distance. When booking hotels, make sure they have parking onsite for parking is the street is the WORST!! Wasted so much time driving around looking for parking. Recommend booking a small car, Italy was built for small cars only.

Absolutely worth paying a bit more to rent a car at the airport itself from a major rental company instead of offsite car rental. Especially with Green Motion, which scams you with unexpected very high fees. Plus they have very slow pickup times. The airport itself is very navigable. If you have a code shared flight with Alitalia, you may need to check in at the Alitalia terminal rather than with the other airline. If you don't rent a car, highly recommend the Leonardo Express to get to and from Rome -- it's cheap and even faster than driving / Uber.

I have used many car rentals. Booking online is cheap, but there are always additional conditions. The insurance was doubled, but the first Hertz car rental at Rome airport was different this year. All the conditions were convenient for the user to choose. The car was also cleaned up as reserved. First of all, I want to thank the friendly staff.

Try Booking in advance, that would speed up the process. If you need to get to the city center (Rome) the cheapest way is to get by bus, and it is pretty fast. If you are renting a car, make sure you research parking. Always rent the car Full to Full, it is cheaper, just don't forget to fill up before you return the car. I have rented cars in the past year all over Europe, and Goldcar was the best option for me. Every single time I had a great experience with the, so I will definitely rent for them next time I need a rental.

Do be familiar with your route before you enter the country and have printed plans in case Google Maps isn't working. Be observant of everything taking place around you and try to adapt to the driving culture of the place you are visiting. Doesn't mean you have to be as reckless as some drive, but make sure to not be in the passing lane if you aren't indeed passing. That, by far, would be my biggest tip! Oh, that and save up for the benzine cost and be grateful that in the US we don't have to pay so much for gasoline.

The area is difficult to navigate around the airport, without GPS. We recommend you have a map of the return to Green Motion on-hand for when you come back. Or buy the GPS. This was the only thing that was somewhat difficult.

My first suggestion comes from personal experience. Read the supplied instructions for where to find the rental car facility. I assumed Centauro would be located with the rest of the on-airport counters to only find I had to go to a location for pick up by their shuttle bus. My mistake on that one, otherwise I found Fiumicino airport to be easy to navigate with ample signage to get a traveler to their assigned ticket counter and gates with ease. It helps to learn a little Italian prior to making the trip.

Driving in tourist hot-spots is best avoided as streets are narrow and parking is expensive. The motorways are fine but expect a lot of toll payments (they take card as as well as cash). October is surprisingly pleasant in terms of weather and it is less busy, a good month to visit. Most restaurants will open at 7pm so try to adhere to the local lunch and dinner times. Gelato is very good and relatively cheap. Most coffee/hot drinks come in sizes smaller to the rest of Europe.

This tip is specifically for Rome Fiumicino airport, but actually is pertinent for most international airports worldwide. There is just the one cafe in the departures hall before security and it's pretty average. If you have friends or family dropping you and staying a while to keep you company in the long wait after check in make sure they clear their bag of ( unfriendly) objects at the car so they can come through the first security point with you to the much better choice of food and drink venues inside.

Make sure and pace yourself. Try and stop wherever you can where there are markers along the highway describing things to see. Fiumicino is a bit chaotic, but the newly renovated/built areas are quite nice. The best option for killing time is eating up on the mezzanine level in the international terminal. The lounges were somewhat underwhelming, but had some decent food and wine. Take the train for sure if going to downtown, otherwise a rental car is generally fairly affordable and access is great. It is a fine airport overall.

Fiumicino is a great place to stay before a flight at FCO. You have the beach. Great restaurants, and inexpensive lodging. Easy to book a hotel with shuttle . Take the tam bus or terravision bus into downtown, cheaper that the da vince train and you get a nice visual tour on the way in. I suggest the Pantheon, especially at night. See the view from the Villa Borghese park at night. Spend time in Piazza Novona. Walk by the Vittoria Emanuel building at night and see the ruins on the way all lit up. Piazza Poppolo is a fabulous spot to relax and “people watch.

A little confusion finding the rental area, but I'll attest that to an 8 hour flight and some grogginess upon debarking. Just find the the little sign of the car with the keys over it and follow that. Was a little jammed in the rental area. All rental agencies lined up in a circle. A bit crowded getting to the back where Hertz was. The airport is really easy to get in and out off. You exit on a direct road into Rome. If you're heading North, like we did, it's a simple ramp to the SS1/E80.

Start your search for a car as early as possible to get a good price. Make sure you have the dates right and make sure your credit card will cover you in Italy. If you don't have an international drivers licence you should get one as you can't get a card in Italy without one. Plan your route in advance. Learn a few phrases in the language so you can get what you need, although most people do speak English. Use your phone navigation system, particularly when returning to Rome. It is not that easy to return compared to leaving.

I would definitely recommend Europcar Fiumicino. The staff was very helpful and made the experience positive for the most part. I would recommend picking up & dropping the car off at the airport. It was very convenient and easy to do. I brought the car back with a full tank of diesel (your best option). However, I was still charged for the full tank option. Not sure what happened there. Anyhow, I was happy with the service and hopefully Europcar Rome Fiumicino will adjust my overall charges. I will definitely be renting from your company next time I'm visiting Rome.
