Take time to get used to your car. Beware that you are going to travel on the right Have a snack or coffee at the excellent restaurant Use the shuttle to the cars and don't try to walk there Follow the signs carefully that direct to the car hire parking Allow plenty of time to return the car before taking a flight Find out where the nearest petrol station to the airport is before leaving home to go to the airport Leave extra time for the possibility of holdups on the autostrada Be prepared to take a little time in taking photographs of any dents or damage to your hire car

Have €2 ready for luggage trolley at Pisa Airport. Large luggage pieces such as baby cot, car seat etc have to be checked in at separate check in area have enough time for that. Do rent a car as it gives you a chance to see so much more of the country you are traveling in.

That grade is for Pisa Airport, however the noleggiare office is not at the airport, but across the busy street with no clear path or crosswalk.

Always buy your car hire insurance policy before you leave the country, this way you don’t need to pay for additional insurance at the desk. Download a sat nav to your phone before you travel saving your money. Do your homework about where you are visiting making sure you know where the company is situated on leaving the airport. Take a map of the area as backup. Take an in car charger for your phone for the sat nav. Always check over the vehicles properly before setting off. Make sure u have enough space on your credit card for the deposit. Don’t forget your driving license. Print out 2 copies of your voucher.

If you want to visit any historic buildings in Italy buy your tickets in advance before traveling in avoid queues. Research carparks and ZTL zones in major cities, Florence has an excellent tram system. Must see areas are Chianti wine region and scenic drives between Florence and Siena.

It's really worth using Google Map / Street View to familiarise oneself with the airport layout etc, especially as at Pisa, the Joyrent (etc.) car hire compound is some distance away from arrivals 750m/9mins walk according to Google Map, although it felt less). There is a courtesy bus, but if there is a large queue it's quicker to walk. The bus stop is the far side of the bus park, outside arrivals. Google Map / Street View is also great for familiarising oneself with all aspects of any journeys you need to undertake. Route plan preparation takes a lot of stress out of the holiday, even if you have Sat Nav. Expect a tedious wait at the car hire desk. then if there isn't one, you'll feel pleased. This applies to both at the beginning and the end of the holiday. In fact, as with any airport, always expect and give yourself time for a lot of queuing at check in, security, pass port control and finally in the departure area.

Go to visit other cities in Tuscany which are beautiful but less known than Pisa. I recommend to visit Pistoia, Arezzo, and Pienza.
