About Car Rental at Naples Airport

Naples is the most populated city in southern Italy, and year after year it attracts millions of tourists. In fact, UNESCO declared the city a World Heritage Site, thanks to its rich history that traces back to some of the most important historical moments in human history.

Naples Airport is used by almost anyone who wants to visit southern Italy – with approximately 9 million passengers passing through the airport every year from all over the world. Many people choose to rent a car at the airport, since it's pretty accessible from all over the city thanks to the ‘Capodichino’ exit of the Tangenziale, which is the urban highway (A56), that connects the city of Naples to the rest of Italy.

There are more than 10 car rental agencies that you can choose from at the airport. Among them are those known worldwide, such as AVIS, Budget, Sixt, Alamo and Thrifty. These agencies offer a wide variety of cars – so you can find the one that best suits your needs.

Renting a car in Naples

Renting a car in Naples is a great idea, especially if you want to save a bit of money. In Naples, there are several smaller agencies that don’t necessarily offer the variety of cars, but they do offer a much more accessible price than that of international agencies at the airport. It is important that you not only look for the best price, but also the best deal for your money – for instance, you want to make sure insurance is covered, so you don’t have to cash out on getting your own short-term insurance.

Driving in Naples

Traffic in the different parts of Naples, except in the suburbs or rural areas, is quite uncontrolled. Of course, the locals know how to handle this, but for tourists, it can be a little overwhelming. Don’t let this put you off, however. So long as you stick to the speed limits and pay attention to the roads, you will be okay driving in Naples.

When you’re driving, remain calm and stick to speed limits at all times – drive with confidence, but accept that other drivers will know the roads better than you and might try to encourage you to speed, or even overtake you dangerously. As a general rule, just ignore these people and drive in a way that makes you feel safe and secure.

Some extra tips to help you when driving in Naples:

Car Rental Agencies in Naples

Some of the best-known agencies in Naples are Enterprise and Hertz. The advantage of renting from these agencies is that they generally let you return the car at the airport, so you can use it until right at the last minute. Apart from that, there are other agencies in Naples that offer a great service. One of them is Morini Car Rentals, located in Via Generale Francesco Pignatelli, which has one of the best online ratings. What makes this agency stand out is the affordable price, the employees, and the different insurances they offer that allow you to travel comfortably and safely throughout Naples.

Another agency that, although small, is chosen by a large number of tourists and locals are Napolirent - Rent Scooter and Car. This agency is particularly great if you want to rent cars and scooters – as they have a selection of classic bikes to choose from.

Top Road Trips from Naples

The San Paolo Stadium (now also called Diego Armando Maradona Stadium) is a place that you must visit, especially if you are a sports fan. In this stadium, the matches of SSC Napoli take place, who are the soccer team that represents Naples in the Italian Soccer League. The stadium also used to be the place where Diego Armando Maradona, the best soccer player in history, played.

Another place you must go to is Centro Storico, known mainly for its churches, such as Gesù Nuovo, which has a stone façade and an opulent Baroque interior, and Santa Chiara, with a cloister full of mosaic columns. The area includes trattorias serving dishes, such as pasta and seafood – or, alternatively, you can choose from many of the different pizzerias in the area.

If you are looking to explore a bit more of Italy, Rome is only 2 hours’ drive from Naples – which is full of Italian culture.

Still not sure where to stay? If you aren’t keen on the nightlife scene, or are looking for more of a relaxing trip, then staying in Chiaia will be a better option for you. This ancient village, that dates back to the 16th century, has now been modernized thanks to the new stores that have set up shop. In fact, it is one of the most luxurious shopping areas in all of Italy.

Frequently asked questions about car rental Naples airport

What's the best area to stay in Naples?
Staying near the Plaza del Plebiscito is a popular destination among tourists. If you choose to stay here, you will be staying in the heart of the city, which is a stone's throw away from most of Naples' tourist attractions. In this area, you will find many hotels at affordable prices, not to mention a bustling nightlife.
What is the cheapest time to go to Naples?
The cheapest time to visit Naples is in the low season, from November to March, except for Christmas, New Year's Eve, Carnival, and Easter, when the prices do go up. The weather isn’t as good during these times, although not especially bad either. If you are looking to spend more time exploring the history of Naples, you could save up to 30% by visiting during these months.
What is the best time to go to Naples?
Although the high season is July and August, we wouldn’t necessarily recommend visiting at this time, because it can be crowded and extremely warm. We’d suggest visiting during the months of April, June and September, where the weather is pleasant and there are hundreds of festivals to go to.
Can you get around Naples without a car?
You can get around the city by bus or metro, but the majority of the signs on both are in Italian. For ease of travel, we would always recommend renting a car, but you can get around the city without one.

the airport is quite small and compact, there's not a lot of walking required. The signage is not great so be vigilant. On arrival we had a few issues finding the bus stop for the courtesy bus to the car hire area, it's a bit lost in the many road works going on there at the moment (feb 2020). On departure, get the duty free/airport shopping done before you head through to your gate. At the gates for Ryan Air a small bottle of water set us back €2.50. There are lots of shops/restaurants in the main airport before you need to venture to the gates (5 minutes walk away).

Upon renting a vehicle, make sure to take a ticket as soon as you arrive to get your service number established. always try to arrive 2 hours early for any flights outside of US b/c one never knows whats around the corner. Customs, check-in, passport check, luggage check, all this stuff takes time & then you never know what kind of additional ground transport you may encounter to actually get you to the gate, ie, trams, buses, subway, conveyors, etc, etc, especially if you've never been to that particular airport.

The shuttle bus to the car rental zone is a small minibus. We were lucky and got there early. By the time we were boarding the shuttle the queue was huge, and you would have to wait for several buses to come and go before getting a ride. Possibly better to walk in those circumstances. After landing the person driving the rear steps to the plane had a nightmare, and everyone had left by the front doors before he managed to line up correctly with the plane. More funny than annoying though!

do take money out at the airport. do use the atm there. don't exchange cash--the rates are a little exhorbitent, and it's better to take thew couple dollar hit on the atm withdrawal. do, if you are hungry and have a bus or something you are waiting for, get the pizza at the end of the road--cheap, solid napolitano pizza. do feel free to use the wifi while you are in the airport. do arrive early for your flight--even though it's a small airport, a lot of the airlines don't have check-in kiosks, and i've waited over an hour on the line to check in.

We visited three places: Altamura, Matera and Naples. Altamura it's a small city, with beautiful Old Town and known as a capital of Italian bread. Matera doesn't need any recommendation since it has place on a unesco heritage list. This is the most outstanding, intact example of a troglodyte settlement in the Mediterranean region. Finally Naples is unique thanks to it's history, monuments, museums, but also thank's to it's kitchen. Naples has the greatest number of accredited stars from the Michelin Guide of any Italian city!

Arrivals is fast, and not a lot of waiting time for your luggage. Car rental is well organised, there is a van that awaits and brings you swiflty to the car rental place where all the companies are based. Also drop off after the car rental is efficient and the van brings you outside the main terminal for departures. Departures: check in quite fast, love the family line when gojng through security. Naples has really invested in their airport in the recent years and they have everyrhing well organised incl check in using your phone. There is a varied range of shops and food and drink and some places to relax. Boarding was fast and on time. All in all a very good experience.

Do ‘t Be conned into extra insurance by car hire companies, do your own research and know what your cover is and would recommend taking excess insurance cover out from UK behind for peace of mind especially if driving in Italy. Make sure you embrace diversity in cultures and remember that is part of what travelling and exploiting new places is all about. Also try and learn a it of the local language, it goes a long way and you will get a lot more from a country and their people.

Remember to download Google Maps offline before your trip. And make sure all documents required for your route are downloaded to be accessible offline on your phone. Check your mobile operator roaming service charges. In 2018 some operators provide roaming services even cheaper than you would find a local sim card. This will help to keep a peace of mind.

There is a free shuttle service to the car rentals. When you come out on the main doors of the airport, you have to keep to the right and follow the car rental signs. It will lead you to the pick-up place, a shuttle bus will pick you up with your luggages. Naples is a quite busy city, the roads are quite full of cars, buses and mopeds, and road paintings are often missing. Do not worry, you just need to feel the rythm of the traffic and there will be no problems. Watch out for cars from side roads, they do not wait much to come out in front of you. To visit the Amalfi coast, Pompei and the Vesuvio a car rental is a must. Do not forget your credit cards, some people had difficulties with debit or some simpler bankcards. Have fun in Naples, it is a great place!

Naples proved, beating the many unpleasant stories of the city, to be a welcoming site to a family of 5 going on a holiday. The staff at the airport are helping and easily answer in English (a different story if you travel further into Italy) and the shuttle services were quick and easy to locate. Among many other locations to arrive at, only Naples boasts an infamous active volcano and a world renowed once buried city of Pompei which are visible over your plane windows and even more grand up close. Do not forget to visit the old parts of the city as it is blooming with Italian spirit. Glittering shops, colourful buildings and narrow streets are a real attraction. If you choose to travel to Naples, renting a car may be a good idea since Southern Italy is blessed with awe-inspiring beaches, often coped with small towns of equal beauty. Would travel again!
