Short-term parking right at the airport is free for 20 minutes! I took advantage of that twice picking up other travelers and had no trouble getting in and out. There are only two exits from the gates when you arrive, A and B, so connecting with friends or family is not difficult. The walk between A and B exits is not long. The airport is not overly large, but the shops and food vendors are more than adequate. Customs and security are fairly easy to navigate. The lines for non-EU travelers are naturally longer, though I can't say I was delayed or that the process was overly taxing. Overall, the Athens airport is was far better than average.

Spend the extra money and use the toll roads if you have to get from one place to the other in a hurry. The roads are in great conditions and once you get out of Athens they are not very busy. Fuel prices can vary so shop around. A diesel powered rental car is a great bonus and saves you a lot of money. Make sure you have a GPS or your smart phone set up so it will assist you getting around. After island hopping we drove to the North and enjoyed an area with the most fantastic beaches in Greece. We leave it up to you to guess where this is :) Happy holidays

An ordinary airport, fairly crowded but not overly confusing. A trip from there to Athens requires a 45-minute taxi ride costing about 45-55 euros or a ride on public transit for 10 euros a person that is likely to take well over an hour, including time spent waiting for the train. This is awkward if you want to spend a day or two in Athens before renting a car, since car rentals in the city seem to be more expensive and not very convenient; since we had decided to spend time in Athens both before and after touring the country we ended up making a total of four trips between the city and the airport. Some smaller car-rental companies, like ours, also lack a desk at the airport, so you have to find their representative standing somewhere near a crowded exit door. We did this fairly easily but I can imagine some people having problems if they don't arrive on time or if there is any confusion about the meeting place. (We were misinformed by a Hertz representative about where our agent would probably meet us, evidently because the location changes from day to day).

Efficient airport, works well for both arriving and departing and car rental. STB (satellite terminal building) is a long walk from the MTB (main terminal building) through an underground tunnel with moving walkways. Cafes OK and not too expensive, but don't go through passport control until you have to as no facilities beyond there and can be crowded waiting to board. Toilet facilities clean. Good takeaway cafe in arrivals at right hand side (looking out) - good for sandwiches and pies for onward journey.

Arriving and/or leaving at night has advantages and disadvantages. The main advantage is that the airport is empty at the wee hours. All services are accessible and even the road to the airport is free. The main disadvantage is that the duty free shopping is limited. As to car rentals, renting a car from one of the big companies gives you a younger car (less millage) that is better kept.

If your flight is arriving late, don't go with an offsite budget rental company. They could leave you completely in the lurch as Goldcar did to me and several other people. Instead go with a budget version of one of the major companies.

The departure gates often change with little notice, so always confirm and reconfirm the gate. Always prepay and book your car rental ahead of arrival. Don’t use currency exchanges at the airport; withdraw cash from bank ATMs (at the airport), instead. Better exchange rate. Duty-free shops charge tax, so you are not getting a better deal with the inflated prices.

There are no road maps of any quality available in the petrol stations. Probably use a GPS. In this respect Greece needs an upgrade. Did not have time to see whether there were any bookstores with good maps in them at the airport, but on return there was nothing of quality in the bookstore in the Departures. Athens airport should also upgrade this. Can't drive in Greece with the maps they have. Roads are marked on maps that just don't exist or do very funny things. However, my driving experience in Greece over all was real fun, and the country is astoundingly beautiful. The archaelogical sites are amazing.

I had a great time in Athens, Greece. No problem, the people of Athens speak several languages and they were very nice to tourist. Parking space are hard to find, but not impossible, so I suggest when renting a car, to rent a small car or you will loose many opportunity for parking in a free parking. Garage parking are expensive, but I did not need to use them.
