The airport is easy to navigate. The rental car shuttle area is just to the right of the pick up/drop off area if you're walking there from baggage claim.

Be considerate of other road users. Check price of fuel if possible en route to destination. Have a good navigator with you. Only stop at places that do not impact other travellers when viewing scenery. Remember it is not a race.

Very well maintained airport. We were on a domestic flight and everything was very smooth and easy. Luggage collection was quick even with oversized items. Car hire was easy to find. A very clean and organised airport.

Good airport. Its size means quick processing through passport control and security. Reasonable amenities. Like that there are showers in the toilets.

wonderful amenities for food, travel information, and souvenirs. It was clean and well run/organized. easy to drive into and drive out of with little to no competition for the road. The grassed area out front was nice and relaxing with wonderful artwork, bean bag chairs and a playable piano. I would highly recommend flights into and out of the Christchurch airport!

1) Plan ahead if it's the holiday season at your destination. 2) If it's not the holiday season then don't plan ahead and see where the wind takes you! 3) Do not use plastic bags to pack your things in if you will be sharing a room. 4) Always take a pack of cards. 5) Talk to locals where possible then you can find the good spots! 6) Do not cram to many stops into your trip, its about "what you see where you go" not "how many places you went to"... it's the experiences that you will remember. 7) Always keep the gas tank full, water bottles full, snacks in the car and a first aid kit - save yourself unnecessary stress. 8) Turn your phone off when you can so that you stay present and connected with your holiday. Finally, If you want to live the dream … All you have to do is follow your heart - GO WHERE YOU WANT GO, NOT WHERE OTHERS WANT YOU TO GO AND NOT WHERE YOU THINK WILL LOOK GOOD ON FACEBOOK. :)

Unfortunately I wasn't in Christchurch for long I was literally there for a day for work and had to return to Australia, so I can't give any recommendations about highlights and things to see and do, however if you're looking for cheap accommodation close to the airport I would recommend JUCY snooze

Drive beyond Lake Tekapu and take your photos at the next lake, beautiful! If heading to Queenstown or Wanaka note the road is windy and allow 6 hours for a relaxing trip.

If concerned with the checkout auto inspection; take pictures (from phone). But in my experience Hitch was not critical at all. Leave plenty of time to clear customs. NZ asks more questions that nearly every other country.

I traveled the entire south island and would especially recommend the mountain regions. Abel Tasman Park was nice, but I particularly enjoyed the drive down from it toward the Pancake Rocks. Queenstown is absolutely lovely. Dunedin is nice. The glaciers (Fox, etc.) are lovely and really, the best portion of the trip was the drive to each destination. You never know what you'll see and each sight is spectacular.

Get a 4x4! I had a mid sized saloon but New Zealand has a fair amount of unpaved roads, particularly if you are looking to visit some of the more remote sites. So if I returned to New Zealand in the future I would definitely have booked an off road vehicle.
