I would suggest that if you have family to where your traveling for them to be your tourist guide. Explore outside the main cities. Eat in places you normally wouldn’t. Find free tours that you can experience with kids or by yourself. Ask the locals for suggestions where to go and eat. Shop around for the best deals.

Not a bad small airport. Taxi line outside, with dispatcher, is a good idea to set arriving traveler's minds at rest about getting a fair fare. Departing travelers must scan bags at agricultural scanner just inside door, which was not clear to this traveler. They seemed to be inconsistent about what scanned; I had to get my small backpack scanned but person ahead of me with larger backpack did not. Seemed a bit short of "grab and go" places to buy a sandwich for on the plane. I was in a hurry and found one such place with limited selections. There were bigger restaurants that might do take-out if one had the time. All-in-all, a decent airport, close to town, with convenient rental car locations in terminal.

Pack light. Be flexible with tropical weather. Por favor and gracias are two expressions that go a long way. Bring sunblock. Make sure to bathe in mosquito repellant when outdoors around dusk. Make friends. Smile. Don’t worry. Be happy!

Tips: The "maleteros" know their way around the airport and can give you tips on how to do things. They also know the staff and can get you checked in, find a taxi quickly for you or even take all your luggage to the car rental office or back from car rental return. They made our trip with children so much more pleasant.

We were stationed in Humacao, which was a very nice location to take advantage of many of the highlights of the island. If you rent a car, you have access to the many beautiful beaches and food huts that are spread throughout the coast. If you can find a tour to take you to some of the historic sites like Old San Juan and its historical forts, and the phenomenal natural sites like the El Yunque Rainforest, you are in for a treat. A fantastic way to spend your days. Also, some of the best international as well as local eating joints are right in the Palmas del Mar complex, offering superb dining and excellent and professional service. Delicious food at reasonable prices and plenty of it!

When you book your car online, you should avoid booking at airports, avoiding airport taxes and additional fees. You will need to pay for a taxi but overall it would round up cheaper. We were happy to see the choices of car we had at the airport.

I love Puerto Rico. My trip started in San Juan and I went all over the island. From San Juan to Luquillo, to Rincon, to Aquadilla and then back to San Juan. I went to some of the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen. The car was comfortable, ran great and was economical.
