Zurich Airport

Zurich airport (ZRH) is the largest international airport of Switzerland. The airport has three terminals: A, B and E. Terminal A is only used for Schengen destinations, terminal B for both Schengen and non-Schengen and terminal C only for non-Schengen. Yearly about 29 million passengers fly from and to Zurich airport. At the airport you can find ‘the circle’: a brand new centre containing a medical centre, office spaces, a convention centre, two hotels, art, shops, restaurants and much more.

After a fifteen minute drive from the airport you’ll find yourself in Zurich: the largest city, and capital, of Switzerland. All the important banks and stock exchanges are located in the city, which makes it the economical centre of Switzerland. The city was even named ‘the city with the highest quality of life’ in 2006 and 2008. One of the main factors for the high quality of life is wealth, the Swiss capital is one of the world’s wealthiest cities in terms of GDP per capita.
The old city centre of Zurich (Altstadt) is very atmospheric with coloured houses, numerous shops, old churches, bars and much more. If you have seen the old centre, you can go the the Lindhof Platz, a nice square in the Schipfe district. Here you can enjoy the 90 linden trees and a nice view over the river Limmat. The main sight of the city is the Grossmünster Cathedral, a beautiful 12th century protestant church.

Check the weather before driving to snow pistes. 4x4 is the best to have in the mountains! Be careful that you don’t drive to fast, especially in tunnels, because the camera ‘s for speeding tickets are everywhere!

I greatly enjoy driving in Switzerland. Particularly the mountain passes such as Julier, Albula, Splugen, Bernina, Maloya, and Stelvio are breathtaking. And with a well-tuned and well-maintained vehicle, it is doable even for drivers who tend to stay away from the sometimes narrow roads. Be careful to watch your speed. Speed limits change constantly in Switzerland. and they are strictly enforced with many "metal cops" (Speed control cameras). The fines are steep. Best is to use the GPS as it shows the permissible speed limit.

When booking through Thrifty, don't be alarmed at needing to go to the Hertz desk. They will be waiting for you and very happy to assist. Having the car location number written on the documents made collecting the car very easy.

If you're taking the train to City Center ask someone, signage is not very clear on how to make that trip. It only takes 10 minutes to Central Station and you can transfer to any other route from their. Otherwise airport is very nice and clean, plenty of clean restrooms along the terminals. Most Swiss are very friendly and happy to help so don't be afraid to ask anyone for directions around the airport.

Very easy airport to find rental car desks. They are located at top of escalators and once you have given details, rental car carpark is directly outside.

Golf in Klosters off high tee boxes overlooking the beautiful mountains was an awesome experience. Swiss Epic mountain bike race was extreme, thrilling and breathtaking taking us through 3 regions, Bettmeralp, Grachen and Zermatt. The largest glacier in the world above Bettmeralp was breathtaking but also sad to see how much it has receded over the last 140 years. As it was autumn when I was there, I loved seeing the cows and sheep being brought down from the mountains with their bells ringing. You have to try raclette - delicious and a very social way to enjoy a meal with friends!! Whether I travelled by train / bus / car the views were always breathtaking.

For sightseeing, you can only spend one day in Zurich that you can visit all attractions in walk distances. I rented the car for visiting Interlaken and surrounding areas. It is a good experience to drive in Switzerland.

Zurich was just the airport I arrived at, my destination was Lake Constance about an hour north on the Swiss, German and Austrian border. Well worth a visit and definitely one of the most beautiful areas in Europe. Any time of year will show of this area in its full glory. If sailing is your thing then its a must.

It is a very nice European city. You need to experience the very long tunnels along the way to Italy. It was not safe driving at night even at the speed limits because of the ice forming on the roads. Too expensive for anything. But worthed to see one time only in the lifetime. But very nice for skiing.
