Car Rental in Thessaloniki

About Car Rental at Thessaloniki

The Thessaloniki-Makedonia International Airport is located 15 kilometers from the capital of Thessaloniki. Despite its proximity to the capital, which is a great advantage compared to other airports, it does not have a large annual passenger flow (on average about 3 million per year). However, there are numerous plans to expand the airport building to increase this number to 9 million – especially since the COVID-19 pandemic started in 2020.

Using this airport is great if you want to be close to the city, but it is still a good idea to rent a car at the airport, so you can enjoy your time right away. If you rent a car, you will only have to drive 20 minutes to get to the center of Thessaloniki.

Inside the airport, you will find different car rental companies, most of them being well known worldwide, so you know you are getting a good service. Among the companies at the airport, you will find AVIS, Budget, Hertz, and Sixt.

Car Rental in Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki offers a wide variety of car rental services, so if you didn't find one that suits you at the airport, you can look for in the city.

An advantage of renting a car outside of the airport is that the prices are typically cheaper, and there is a wider variety of companies to choose from. Here, you will also find a greater variety of cars, from SUVs for families and groups, to smaller cars.

If you have made the decision to rent a car, we always recommend booking well in advance, to avoid high prices or lack of choice when it comes to choosing your vehicle. At the airport, you should be able to use any currency to pay for your rental car, but booking ahead means you can use whichever currency you want.

Driving in Thessaloniki

When driving in Thessaloniki, you should pay close attention to motorcycles, as they are everywhere and can be difficult to see at times. Fortunately, the roads and streets are in good condition, so you can focus on driving instead of worrying about damaging your car. We would also recommend getting yourself a GPS (most car rental companies offer these at an extra cost), as getting lost here can be quite easy.

Here are some extra tips that will also help with driving in Thessaloniki:

Car Rental Agencies in Thessaloniki

Apart from the car rental agencies already mentioned, which are located in different countries, some agencies are only found in Thessaloniki and are praised by the locals.

A popular car rental company here is Capital-Rent. It holds a certificate granted by The Greek Rental Car Association (STEEAE) and it has been open since the 90s, so you know that experience and quality is guaranteed. The car fleet includes different varieties of Ford cars, such as Ford Focus, Maverick, Galaxy and many more to choose from.

Another popular one is Automotorental. This rental company is particularly unique in that you can also rent a motorcycle, which is ideal for those travelling alone, or travelling light. Another bonus of this company, is that they offer 24 hours pick up and drop off – so you never need to worry about when you can drop your vehicle off.

Top Road Trips from Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki is a great place to take a road trip, because there are so many interesting and beautiful places close by. For example, you will find Kalamaria, a city located 7 km from the center of Thessaloniki, that is part of the Greater Thessaloniki Metropolitan area. It has interesting museums and historical places to visit, that every history-lover will be in awe of.

Frequently asked questions about car rental Thessaloniki airport

What's the best area to stay in Thessaloniki?
If you want to find cheaper accommodation, you can look outside the historic center. Although the hotels won’t be as luxurious, they will be comfortable and far more affordable. The peninsula of Chalkidiki or Halkidiki is an excellent option to stay if you want to visit as much of the island as you can, enjoy the beaches and spend time in nature. Of the three peninsulas, you can only stay in the first two: in Cassandra, which stands out for its nightclubs and hotels, as well as spa establishments that organ
What is the cheapest time to go to Thessaloniki?
The cheapest time is during its winter, in January, February and the beginning of March. December is not so cheap, because people head here for Christmas and New Year’s celebrations. However, a disadvantage of this time is that you will miss spending any time on the beach, since the waters will be very cold (unless, of course, you want a cold-water swim). It is an ideal date for those who want to explore the history of Greece and the city.
What is the best time to go to Thessaloniki?
The best time is during the summer, with June being the most popular month, since the heat isn’t unbearable, but you can still visit the beach and be comfortable. Do keep in mind, however, that this season is usually one of the most expensive, especially since it coincides with the school holidays.
Can you get around Thessaloniki without a car?
You can definitely get around without a car of your own, but you will need to take into consideration that most public transport signs are in Greek – so you might want to learn a little before you arrive if you don’t plan on renting a car.

Avoid moving downtown by car. Park somewhere near or at the International Fair of Thessaloniki venue and enjoy walking in the centre of the city. Promenade by the sea is a must. Even better is a view from the sea, if seen sailing with one of the three boats available for a short time (30 minutes) sea travel.
