Shannon is a very convenient airport for me or anyone traveling to the west of Ireland. It has a great lounge with friendly staff. It’s very well stocked with drinks and healthy snacks. Also you can grab water for your flight. The duty free is amazing. I always spend my left over euro there. Quite often there are some great art displays. The security staff are friendly and don’t yell at everyone to take their shoes off etc. they helped me with the bins etc. Shannon is the most hassle free airport in Ireland in my opinion. Easy to get to and easy to get out of!

we found everything easy and had no hassles at all. Even the plane took off on time! Worst part are the seats in Departures-they are like concrete.

Shannon airport is wonderfully located with many nearby places that will be loved by fans of history, culture, great food, scenery and nature as well as welcoming children. For history, scenery and great food, head to Cashel, traditional home of Irish kings and bishops with restaurants in the Michelin guide including Chez Hans and wonderful views of the surrounding countryside from the Rock of Cashel itself. You can go further back in time by visiting Cragganowen in Co Clare. Travel even further back to prehistoric times by going to the Aillwee caves, also in Clare and see where bears used to hibernate followed by a drive through the unique lunar landscape of the Burren. Continue onto Doolin for traditional Irish music and award-winning food in pubs and restaurants there. From there, you can easily reach the spectacular Cliffs of Moher and O'Briens Tower on the Wild Atlantic Way. These are just a handful of the huge variety of places to see and things to do just a short drive from Shannon airport. You'll leave wanting to come back.

This was my first time driving in Ireland, so several pointers to others taking this plunge. First, spend some time before you arrive thinking about what it will be like to drive on left side of road. If you have a standard, it also means mentally preparing to shift with left hand. Be ready for roundabouts with traffic flows to the left- this was not easy getting used to. I found it incredibly helpful to have a family member ride up front responsible for navigation and reminders to stay left (especially on unmarked roads or taking corners at first). Make sure to have GPS service on phone or via rental to minimize distractions of trying to navigate. My trip went fine, but having GPS, a designated navigator along side, and some mental preparation beforehand was very helpful. Also, be ready to drive back on right side when you return! You will likely be tired and in airport traffic in your home country, and it may be difficult to switch back at first. Now that I've done it, I have no qualms about going back and driving the rest of Ireland by rental car. It allowed us to see things and go places no tour bus would provide.

We did not stay in Shannon as we were travelling to meet friends in Galway. However, it's location is very accessible to the motorway and in particular the Wild Atlantic Way which we used to see the Cliffs of Moher on the way to Galway.
