About Car Rental at Bucharest Airport

The Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport (more commonly known as Bucharest Airport), is Romania’s busiest international airport. It is situated in Otopeni, a town approximately ten miles north of the Romanian capital city, Bucharest. It has been and is currently being expanded due to its popularity, as it has many connections to destinations all over the world.

As soon as you’ve landed, you’re going to want to get to the city centre to start exploring. We recommend renting a car to do this. Luckily, the airport has made it easy for you, as they have over six different car rental counters to choose from, located on the connecting corridor between the Departures Terminal and the Arrivals Terminal. With household names like Hertz, Enterprise Rent-a-Car, and Sixt, you will have an easy time finding an agency that is right for you.

Downtown Car Rental in Bucharest

Don’t completely rule out hiring a car in downtown Bucharest though. There are plenty of benefits to waiting to rent a car until after you’ve left the airport. Not only are there more options for you to choose from, but you can also avoid the costs of airport taxes if you decided to rent downtown too.

We recommend finding out what car rental companies are available in downtown Bucharest ahead of your visit. That way you will be able to look at all the options available to you and see which car hire agency has the best vehicles, selections, and benefits for your trip. Additionally, if you make your choice ahead of time you can even save a little extra money by booking and paying for your car in advance.

Driving in Bucharest

It’s safe to say that driving in Bucharest is an adventure. Romania as a whole is incredibly scenic, with plenty to see and do, so hiring a car is your best option for the freedom to get the most out of your time here, but do be aware that driving in Bucharest can become rather congested, and there are many restrictions on parking. Because of this, you may want to plan your journey in advance and use public transport or walk when travelling around the inner city.

Things you should know about driving in Bucharest:

Car Rental Agencies in Bucharest

You will find all the best car rental agencies in both downtown Bucharest and at Bucharest Airport. If you choose to shop downtown you have the choice of many different companies, including plenty of local options. This variety means you can afford to be picky and shop around until you find somewhere that has exactly what it is you are looking for. On the other hand, if you decide to rent a car at the airport with an international brand such as AVIS or Europcar, you can guarantee that you will be paying for the very best quality. For example, internationally renowned car rental company, SIXT has a diverse selection of luxury and practical vehicles for you to choose from, and they offer a competitive service that is second to none.

Top Road Trips from Bucharest

Bucharest is an animated city with plenty to see and do, but there are many other fantastic destinations to explore outside of the city as well. Luckily, Bucharest makes for a convenient base to travel from if you want to explore more of Romania.

We recommend taking a day out to go on a road trip to Peles Castle if you want to feel like you have waltzed into a fairy tale for the day. A truly exquisite piece of 1800’s architecture, you can go on a tour of the castle where you can explore both the stunning interiors and grand views of the exterior.

Or, if you’re more interested in traversing the glorious, Romanian landscapes, take a trip to Piatra Craiului National Park. This beautiful, protected area of nature is the perfect scene for hiking, rock climbing, and even horse riding.
