Good airport, fast security, nice shops. But, the airport runs on "island time" so don't expect to show up 2 hours before your flight and expect things to be open.

Many places to have a meal of snack in the terminal gate area. Can sit near gate but away from it because public announcement for final boarding is clear and easy to hear. Bathrooms have baby change fold down shelf. Travel early morning or late night flight to avoid crowds. Arrive 30 minutes before anticipated flight checkin to return rental car so as not to miss 1 hour before departure check in, since shuttles can take time to get to your checkin area. Check for liquid in bottles in carry on so as to avoid slow down at TSA security check. Return rental car 1 hour before anticipated flight checkin so can calmly look at various displays of Hawaiian culture in gate areas.

The airport is a bit confusing, but everyone was helpful. Leave a bit of extra time when flying out since you have to go to multiple places to check in, check bags, then line just to get through security, then security, then another agricultural check. It’s a nice airport - obviously has been added on to many times so bit of a maze. We got to our flights on time regardless of all this!

Arriving was easy, but departure was a nightmare. Plan for very long lines at security as they aren't designed to handle large crowds. We barely made it through in time before they closed the door to the airplane. But then we sat on the runway for a whole hour because there were so many planes trying to take off.

Go early and enjoy. Plan ahead and check the weather forecast if it is raining. Had some of the most beautiful sunrises/sunsets, rainbow at Diamond Head, and awesome food. Check out all parts of the island, and do at least one beach, one hike, and eat at a local Resturant outside of Waikiki. Also, Kokonuts Shave Ice was my favorite thing on my trip.

Didn't realize the separation of International and local flights. Returned the car, then had to walk a long ways to reach the other part of the terminal. More publicity about that might have kept us from that error.

Do try to do all of the water sports available, its totally worth it. Plan well ahead in case something occurs. Make sure you wear lots of sunscreen before heading out. The Sealife park Dolphin encounter is an amazing experience! Make sure to swing by Me's BBQ if you're in Waikiki, the food is great. The Fireworks show at Waikiki friday nights are spectacular too.

Oahu allows for fun and relaxation. For fun you stay in Waikiki where there is an abundance of restaurants, shops and bars. The beach can be crowded and noisy but that’s what you sign up for in Waikiki. To get to a peaceful experience head out of Waikiki and you will find more of the resort serene experience.

Dont be afraid to ask around! The people of Hawaii are friendly and willing to assist you in any way. The laid back demeanor sometimes works against you, as catching a cab from Waikiki can take you longer than you think to get to the airport. Make sure you plan ahead for transportation. You won't find anyone "lei-ing" you at the airport, but there are convenient vending machines that offer them. Also, we saw a line of lei kiosks just outside of the airport that make it super convenient to grab one on the way to the city. I wish we could have seen these vendors on our way OUT of the airport instead of on the way IN at the end of our trip. We cant wait to get back to Hawaii, you won't regret your trip.

Rent a car if not staying in Waikiki. Use GPS or google maps as many roads are not clearly marked. If time, drive the island. The North Shore and around is worth the time (about 1 1/2 hours)

Respect is the number one thing when visiting the islands. It is important to show respect for the land, the culture, the ways of life, etc. There's nothing worse than visiting someone's home only to feel like it is being invaded on. When you show respect, you get respect and a smile back. The aloha spirit is a strong force. Show it when you visit, and it will be shown back to you.

There will be thousands of tourists in Waikiki, so expect crowded beaches and restaurants. Bring comfortable shoes and plan to walk a lot. Arizona memorial is free but busy, get your tickets on line 8 weeks before for a $1.50 fee. If they are "sold out" more tickets are released the day before. Read attire and bag policy before going. Hiking to the top of Diamond Head for the sunrise is spectacular, but you must get there early. The day we went, there were already 200 people there, presumably dropped off by a tour bus that didn't stay in the small parking lot. It's also not too hot first thing in the morning.

Get a book on the island you're traveling to. We purchased the book "Oahu Revealed" which is very comprehensive. If you're into snorkeling, Hanauma Bay offered the best (that we found), although you have to get there before 7:00 to avoid parking and entry fees. We found snorkeling elsewhere on the island, although not the variety and number of species.
