Make sure you have them explain the car to you like lights. Wipers. Remote control etc. what is the difference between filling the tank yourself or having it filled? Is it cheaper to do one or the other.

In winter, try to fly nonstop! If you cant, give yourself plenty of time for layovers at airports, especially JFK and O'Hare, and especially in winter, when weather can cause massive delays. If you do need to make connections in winter, try southern airports like Atlanta or Dallas, where local weather is less of a factor. However, even there the ripple effects of weather events in the north and east can create delays. Just in case, I always bring work or a book with me to do if I'm stuck in an airport. If missing a connection stresses you out, find a nice restaurant, think positive thoughts, and try to relax! You'll get there eventually.
