About Car Rental in Denver

The capital of Colorado, Denver is a city brimming with culture and adventure. Whether you’re there to explore the thousands of acres of parks that grace the city’s landscape, or you want to visit the famous Denver Zoo and Botanic Gardens, every day you spend in the Mile High City will be jam-packed with experiences you’ll never want to forget. And, to top off your adventure you can follow the Denver Beer Trail, where you can enjoy the city’s famous local beer culture with a sample or two from some delicious local craft breweries. What more could you want?

With so much to see and do in this magnificent city, we would highly recommend renting a car as your first port of call. Driving is really the only way to experience everything Denver has to offer, and, with the city being such a great base for exploring further afield around Colorado, it will give you the opportunity to widen your horizons even more. Because of this, renting a car is a highly popular option, so there are plenty of agencies available for you to choose from. Do your research prior to your trip so that you can find the best company for you, based on location, vehicle types, and time.

Downtown Car Rental in Denver

You may want to skip the hassle of hiring a car at the airport and head straight to the city. This is no problem, as there is an abundance of car hire agencies in downtown Denver. If you are erring towards an international company with plenty of five-star reviews under their belt, we recommend checking out agencies such as Budget, Enterprise, and Avis. These companies all have plenty of experience, and will be able to provide you with everything you need to make the most of your visit to Colorado’s capital. However, it may be worth looking into some of the more local agencies available. Mile High Car Rental is a great example, proving incredibly popular with tourists and visitors to the city. They have the same level of fantastic customer service as their worldwide competitors, but by choosing them you have the additional benefit of supporting a local business.

Driving in Denver

Denver is an eclectic city full of the most beautiful sights you will ever see. Whether you’re driving through the urban streets or cruising along the open roads with the Rocky Mountains as your backdrop, you’ll be sure to have an amazing time behind the wheel. But, to ensure your time is happy and safe we recommend doing your research on the local laws prior to hiring a car, especially if you’re not used to driving in Colorado.

Tips for driving in Denver:

Car Rental Agencies in Denver

There is a truly huge selection of car rental agencies in Denver, so, although you definitely won’t struggle to find one, it may be a bit overwhelming trying to decide which one to choose. If this is the case for you, we recommend doing plenty of research prior to your visit. Compare car rental agencies using websites such as Kayak or Travel Supermarket to find out which ones have the best deals and vehicle options for your needs. Many will also have different options depending on when you book them too, so be prepared to spend some time going back to websites if you want to find the best deals possible. It is also worth noting that, if you’re planning to visit Denver in the winter, road conditions can be quite difficult, so check that your car rental agency has benefits in place to ensure your safety on the road when booking.

Top Road Trips from Denver

Known for being the ‘Gateway to the Rockies’, Denver has a landscape that is bursting with natural beauty. The city is the perfect starting place for a number of road trips that take you on a journey through this incredible scenery with National Parks, mountains, forests, and so much more to discover. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, you can even drive to Las Vegas along a route that shines with beautiful views around every turn.

For a truly iconic road trip, we recommend taking the six-hour route North of Denver to see the historic Mount Rushmore. Located in the Black Hills, these giant, carved faces of America’s most famous presidents are a once-in-a-lifetime sight. Or, for a shorter trip, head over the Rocky Mountains to Glenwood Springs, where, in approximately three hours, you will find the largest hot spring pool in the world.

Also the representative we went to was Dan, he was very helpful in guiding us in what to do in the area and what places to visit. All in all we had no problems and everything went smooth. Definitely will book with holidaycars.com in the future! Looking forward to our next rental! Thank you!

Denver Airport is a ways from Denver. If you need to use the bathroom, do so before leaving the airport. Check out the art in the airport. It's pretty good. Drive up into the mountains, or at least to Red Rocks. There are some nice hiking trails there. If it's winter, be sure to get 4 wheel drive. You never know when snow may come. If you are unfamiliar driving in snow, you definitely don't want to be caught unprepared.

It was super simple to rent a car through Holiday Cars, and the people at the rental counter were very friendly and helpful. They kept the customer's interests at the top of their list and helped us get on the road quickly and efficiently. If you are driving out to the mountains from Denver, make sure you have an all-wheel or 4-wheel drive vehicle - Ricardo told us that there are new regulations on the highway through the Loveland Pass that prohibit vehicles without all-wheel or 4-wheel during the winter months. We are so thankful for his advice, otherwise we would have gotten a ticket, or worse - stuck in the ditch! We would highly recommend taking a drive through the mountains and checking out the many ski resorts in the rockies. In addition to skiing and snowboarding, you can visit incredible hot springs, rent snowshoes or snow mobiles, shop the finest outdoor retailers in the world, and so much more.

Plan plenty of time if you are checking ski/snowboard equipment and travel during non-peak times. Know where you are meeting your party as there are different places that commercial/personal vehicles are allowed. There is not a cell phone waiting lot for non-commercial traffic. Bars and restaurants are quite crowded, so plan accordingly.


says:
Unless you know 100% that you will not have any delays at all (due to your fault, the airline or mother nature) do not book thru a third party agency. You must prepay and should your travel plans change you get a classic catch-22 runaround. The third party booking agency says refunds/exchanges will be handled by car rental agency, and of course car rental agency says all issues must be handled by 3rd party bookers. They both claim that prepayment is handled & held by other entity. While it is true that comparison shopping can save your money consider the unknowns, and potentials for trip changes, when booking rental cars before making prepayments. The hassles you encounter are not worth the few bucks you save by going through the rental car company directly.

The airport is very easy to navigate. The security TSA checkpoint is clearly labeled and the TSA agents were very friendly and thorough in the information and instructions they gave. I would recommend to be sure and check your airline's policy on bags and bag sizes. Make sure ahead of time that they are the right size and that you have paid for them if needed. Paying ahead of time is much cheaper than paying at the gate. Also be sure to check the TSA website for items you can and can't pack. This will save you a lot of time getting through security. Last, if you have a work badge on you and have to remove it for the scanner, don't forget to get it back out of the bin!!! :)

DIA is modern and efficient but... also big. If it’s your first visit/trip then review the airport map and find out where your points of interest are. This helps a bit when you arriving tired or departing stressed. First time timers should also read up on what you’ll be asked to do in the security check with TSA. This will spare your nerves as well as the nerves of the people behind you. Don’t arrive last minute! You never know what will pop up. Also, if you’re a US citizen arriving home from abroad then consider using the E-Passport app on you phone. It really expidites your time clearing customs.

Always use Vaseline or other to coat nostrils to avoid airborne sicknesses. Always check 3rd party, ie autonrental or airline, websites from promotions that you could avail of. Be nice to all staffing as they already have too many irate customers and a smile goes a long way. Especially counter and TSA folks. Be prepared for security checkpoints and don’t wait for the last minute. Pack yourself a lunch/ snack, no dressings or liquids above 3oz. Will save you a fortune, and you’ll also know what you’re getting. If you like to order alcohol on the plane, pick up some of the plastic miniatures at your local liquor store. You can carry as many as you like. :) Wear loose fitting clothing, sweats etc. the day of dressing up to travel is gone and the more comfortable you are, the better you’re experience will be. Don’t forget airplane compatible headphones too.

First time to the US, Colorado was our favourite place of the whole trip. We went for a hike in the Rocky mountains, there was snow in November but we didn't get cold, it was awesome. Red Rocks amphitheater was very cool and there's a short hike to do. Larimer street was also very picturesque with quaint shops; and we also did the Street Mall in the same day (I think it was 16th Street). I would also highly recommend Vail or Brackenridge when there's snow, they are phenomenal towns, absolutely stunning and fairy-tale like. I had to promise my wife that we'll go back one day to spend Christmas there. There are so many ski slopes in that area if you're keen on skiing.

For the Denver airport be prepared to arrive early for the security lines, unless you have TSA pre-check. The airport layout when you get off the flight I found to be a little odd as well; you will need to take 3 escalators to get to ground transportation/ rental car shuttle service. Also please make sure you leave yourself at least 15-20 minutes extra for the shuttle to make it's round to the airport, all car rental companies are off site. There are a few good restaurants located within the airport however be prepared to spend the traditional mark up for onsite eats. One would believe that the airport is near the city, however the downtown Denver is 35-45 minutes without traffic. The airport is also located about 10 miles down the airport exit off the major highway so please allow enough time for parking and rental return.

If you are trying to get from DIA to one of the many hotels near DIA, you don't have to wait for the shuttle that takes you to the exact hotel you are staying in. You can pretty much take any of the shuttles, because all the hotels are going to about the same place. If you want to optimize this, you can look online first and see which hotels are very near yours. Then you can take any shuttle that goes to any of the very nearby hotels. It looks like the shuttle driver does not ask you for a reservation, so you will not get in trouble doing this. This trick may save you the hassle of waiting a long time for your hotel shuttle. I think that this same trick ought to work when you want to get from DIA to the rental car offices because those are also all in about the same place.

The people who work at Denver airport are amongst the best you could find anywhere. The layout of the airport is a bit sprawling. The restaurants are good with a lot of choice. If you have purchased fast food it was difficult to understand where to sit, I went to my gate to sit down and wait. I have traveled in and out of Denver many times in the past several years and have never had any issues. The airport is large and requires times to get through it, but there is a system that works. I prefer to book with airlines that use Terminal A as I do not have to use the underground rail system to get to my terminal. I also use the outside curb check for my luggage as there is often no wait and the bell caps are always very helpful. The standard back check and check-in can get very busy on high travel days. Denver is a very popular tourist destination and the airport is very often busy. Plan extra time to get through the airport and know that there are some extra steps to get in and out of the airport due to the size of the facility. The airport is also a good 30-40 minutes from the downtown and it is necessary to plan the additional travel time when coming too and departing from Denver. Hope this is helpful.

The airport is very clean. I love how it is decorated! It is small compared to the other major hubs like JFK so going through security is a bit faster. People that work there are always friendly. The directions are clear on where to stand to get picked up in the free car rental shuttles by company. The ride to the car rental is about 10 minutes. Great experience!

Plan extra time for the trip to the car rental as a shuttle is needed. Security lines are long and time should be allowed but overall one of the more organized airport security experiences. Definitely check in ahead of time and use the bag drop line if possible. The food court is fairly affordable for an airport. The free water stations have decent water so you can save on buying that. They have plenty of phone charging stations at the gate, which was a relief! If you have extra time, there are plenty of Denver historical kiosks to peruse.

Denver is not too far away from Colorado Springs where we spent the majority of our time. There is a ton of stuff to do like the Garden of the Gods, Mt. Cheyenne Zoo, Focus on the Family Center, as well as downtown Denver. We had a great time and the entire state is beautiful and somewhere I would like to live some day. Definitely go to Denver and Colorado Springs you won’t regret it and you’ll love being able to just look outside and see all of the beautiful mountains. Advantage did make it easy to get a rental car, but they also gave us an upgrade to an SUV which was great for the whole family and made it easy and fun to get around the area! We will be back to Denver and Colorado Springs and will be using Advantage again. Can’t wait to get back there and enjoy the Colorado views, skies and beautiful scenery as well as the clean air!

Denver airport has multiple pick up locations because we were on the last stop it took us over an hour and twenty three minutes to be exact to be picked up to take us to the car rental location. Maybe try sending a van to each location so that the first stop won’t fill the van each time. It is very cold in the winter to stand with children. We called customer service and we were told that we just had to wait. They could not connect us to the local pickup center for an ETA because, “they do not work on that issue, amend we just needed to wait.”

Best travel tips regarding car rental: 1. Know that you may end up with a vehicle you really are not happy with - it just seems to go that way. 2. Pack lightly so as not to be disappointed with the storage space of your vehicle. 3. If you rent a midsize car, be careful when driving in the snow/ice. You will slide. Best travel tips for visiting Denver or the surrounding area: 1. You must visit Denver Biscuit Co. They have the best cinnamon roles ever. And the rest of the food is good too. 2. If you are skiing, consider Winter Park. It is a great mountain and not crowded during the week. 3. Visit Frisco - great town with lots of shops and restaurants.

But once we checked out upstairs, it opened a lot more options. We were fortunate and the baggage claim was in our terminal, so we didn't have to take a train anywhere. Since lunch took a little longer, they ended up unloading our bags for us and setting them aside. Since there was customer service there, they were eager to help us find our luggage. We got a cart. What a vacation winner! Let’s combine purple mountain majesties . . . HolidayCars.com. . . and . . . Budget Rent A Car System, Inc. Planning the perfect trip requires expertise and coordination. What better way to see the purple mountain majesties of the western slope of Colorado than to fly into Denver and rent a car to explore the Front Range Mountains and cities. My first suggestion is to plan well in advance. Use the internet to find the right price . . . this I found at HolidayCars.com. I never expect all things to work smoothly but I do expect professional help from the chosen company should a snafu arise. When I double checked the finalized car reservation, there was indeed a snafu and HolidaysCars.com took care of it . . . quickly and professionally. Thus, my second suggestion; double check information received well ahead of your intended departure date. I was also prepared for long lines at Budget in Denver . . . Denver being a popular place for Colorado adventurers to begin and knowing the reasonable rental rate available from Budget. I was not disappointed; lines were long. However . . . Budget had many associates behind the checkout counter and the line moved quickly. Budget associates were knowledgeable about rental option add-ons but not pushy if they were declined. Being an already harried passenger after a long flight this speed and professional ism was appreciated. So, my third suggestion; be prepared to be treated professionally by personnel in

Signage for gas stations along the highways is non-existent. There must be a law against large signs you can see from the road so make sure you use your GPS when you need to fill up.

I am a native of Denver, so there were no surprises. On the night we arrived May 26), there was a snow storm just outside of Denver, leaving a spectacular view the next morning with mountain peaks up to 80/90 miles north and 70 miles south to Pikes peak covered with glistening new pure white snow. These mountain peaks are anywhere from 13,000 to 14,300 (or more) feet in height, so such a view under such conditions is truly memorable.
