Raleigh-Durham is a great airport. I got in and out of there in a flash with no issues. I drove my little Hyundai Accent rental all the way to Asheville where we visited the Sierra Nevada Brewery and had a great time. The town of Boone is also not to be missed. North Carolina is much like my native state of New Hampshire in that it's got it all--beaches, mountains and lots in between! I'm looking forward to going back for another visit. Next time I'll stop by the Fat Tire Brewery in Asheville!

The website and google and some prepay sites say that the car hire at Durham closes at 12. But I heard that it is open to 2am. The shuttle bus is frequent. Finding the drop off is a little complicated and although there are signs it is not that easy, left turns onto a busy road. Make sure you return the car full of gas, or pay in advance. THEY NEVER ANSWER THE PHONE! Please pick up the phone.

For the price this was absolutely a great rental experience!! Drop off early in the morning was so smooth. I was going to empty our trash and the worker was like, “don’t worry about it, I will do it.” Those little details matter. I would rent again if I’m in the area. I recommend them.

If you were going to go to the beach, I would suggest staying overnight. We went to a few beaches, but really liked Carolina beach. The town has a lot of little shops and a boardwalk. Some of the reviews made us second guess our original choice, but so glad that we did. Lots of the hotels or motels are convenient so you can walk to the boardwalk. There are a lot of airport hotels in Raleigh if you have a really early flight. We were able to drop the rental car off and have the hotel shuttle pick us up at the rental car location.

Explore all of RDU's surrounding cities! We loved walking around downtown Durham, the Duke University campus, and the local parks. We also enjoyed touring Chapel Hill - walking around the campus and trying out the popular local restaurants and coffee shops. Downtown Wake Forest is a favorite of ours as well; the historic district goes all out with the fall decorations! If you're renting a car at RDU, know that you'll walk across the street to the shuttle bus area, and you'll have to watch for your specific company's bus. They don't have marked spaces for each company, so you have to be alert to spot the right one. They move a lot of people in and out quickly, so the process works quite efficiently as long as you're quick on your feet.

I would tell people to prepare your bookings in advance online as it is easy and just. When you get to your destination, Budget was there to receive you and bring you to the rental depot to pick up your car.

1. Check your luggage, it's worth the freedom through TSA, airport and the plane loads faster. 2. Have only one person wait in line at the car rental counter. 3. Have all rental documents, credit card, driver's license ready. 4. Know if you want car insurance, prepaid tank of gas gps units or car seats. Prearrange them on your reservation when possible. 5. Take pictures of all sides of rental car before and after renting the car. 6. Get to know your new rental vehicle, set up gps etc prior to pulling out of the parking space.

Rdu is very easy to access. Signage gets you to where you need to be. Glad the speed limit is slow. Very helpful that the car rental had 24 hour access. Friendly service through out airport. Pick up and drop off for flights is a very easy process.

Always verify the type of rental you're getting - if the rental agreement says 7 passengers, make sure the vehicle can accommodate 7 people. I think some rental agencies will try to give you a smaller vehicle if you get a super low rate on a larger car. That happened to me on a previous rental - I wouldn't accept anything smaller than what I rented.

Travel light if possible. Bring headphones as most airlines have movies to watch on the plane. Bring a book in case of the delay and no online connection on the plane during the delay. Bring an empty water bottle to fill at the airport, most airports have water stations now. It will save you money buying water at the airport. Dress in layers when flying. It can be either hot or cold on the plane. Take the best advantage of the time you have flying to catch up with movies, news, emails, etc.

If renting a car from Raleigh-Durham, regardless of what the advertisement says, there exists NO car rental in-terminal. There are convenient shuttles to take you to where the car rental places are and they are frequent and convenient for getting to the car rental company of your choosing and getting you in your rental quickly to enjoy what Raleigh, Durham, or any other surrounding city has to offer!

It's a medium sized airport. All the rental car agencies require a bus shuttle to a rental car area. All the companies have locations there. It's not far, but you have to wait outside. North Carolina roads aren't perfect, but they're pretty easy to drive on. For real Southern NC-style barbecue and fantastic hush puppies, try Bullock's barbecue in Durham - it's been there since at least the 1960's. They close early, though, because it's a family restaurant and that means the people who work there should be able to get back home to their families too. You gotta love that

Make sure you do a thorough walk around and note any damage. It's only been a couple days and I haven't heard anything back from Budget claiming I damaged their car, but still better to be safe. I did a walk around initially, but didn't notice the rear bumper for some reason. It had a big hole in it where someone backed into something. There's no form for existing damage, so I suggest making notes and take it to the counter. Might even be good to make two copies and get a signature. That being said, they didn't check the car for damage when I returned it so maybe they're just concerned about damage that would incapacitate the vehicle.

Rdu is easy to navigate. The staff all are very professional. There is a good restaurant with sports in the southwest terminal. The other Restaurant has better beer prices, but less of a view. The security checkpoint wait is usually very short. If you fly Southwest, there are self check in kiosks at the far end of the counter that are working when the closer ones are down.

The airport is clean and well-signed for the most part. The rental car shuttle and lots are very close, though a sign/list of which rental car companies use the shuttle and which ones share shuttles would have been helpful. It was the easiest security check point I have ever been through, so that was a big plus.

Raleigh, NC is centrally located, 2.5 hours from the Atlantic Ocean and 4 hours to the mountains. Plenty of places to dine and shop, no matter you budget. Charlotte, NC is only 2.5 hours away. A nice day trip if you are not staying in there. Summers can be hot with typically mild winters. If your destination is Raleigh, NC in the Fall, take the 4 hour trip to the Blue Ridge Parkway. get a hotel room while there. The Blue Ridge Parkway is the most scenic route in America. It will not disappoint. 8 of the 10 highest points east of the Mississippi River (including the highest) are in North Carolina.
