Car hire for exploring Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City is the capital and the most populous municipality in the U.S. state of Utah. It is located in a larger metropolis known as the Salt Lake City–Ogden–Provo Combined Statistical Area. Due to its proximity to the Great Salt Lake, the city was originally called ""Great Salt Lake City""; however, the word ""great"" was dropped from the official name in 1868 by the 17th Utah Territorial Legislature. Salt Lake City has since developed a strong outdoor recreation tourist industry based primarily on skiing, and hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics. It is the industrial banking center of the United States. When you have your rental car, you can drive to different skiing spots whenever you want.

Climate in Salt Lake City

The climate of Salt Lake City is commonly claimed to be semi-arid, but in theory the Salt Lake City has a hot-summer humid continental climate with hot summers and cold, snowy winters. The primary source of precipitation in Salt Lake City is massive storms that move in from the Pacific Ocean. In mid-to-late summer precipitation mainly comes from afternoon thunderstorms caused by monsoon moisture moving up from the Gulf of California. Although rainfall can be heavy, these storms are usually scattered in coverage and rarely severe. Be very aware of the climate in the period when you plan to visit.

Rent from one of the companies on sight at Salt Lake airport. Make sure to visit Zuppas and Vessel Kitchen for great food. Big Cottonwood Canyon is gorgeous. Antelope Island has lots of Buffalo. It is also a great place to experience the Great Salt Lake! If you are in downtown Salt Lake check out CityCreek Mall. Make sure to eat lunch at the Blue Lemon!

The SLC Airport is so clean and fun! There is lots to do there and beautiful scenery out of every window. Staff is efficient. Prices are fair. Agents are friendly. (We were late and agents from other counters were cheering us on as we ran to catch our plane.) SLC is the calmest airport I have ever been in,! Thank you for such attention to detail.

I would determine if the airline had an APP that could be downloaded to a smart device. By doing this, you can download your boarding pass to your phone. The app will also tell you when you need your pass by where you are in the airport. Just remember to turn your location on while in the APP. The boarding passes are stored in the wallet of your smart device. You can text passes of your other travels if one person completed the booking.

I guess I will not be winning the prize. I cannot think of any travel tips in relation to the airport. The airport is well laid out for both arrivals and departures. The rental area for both agents and car pickup is close enough to arrivals and luggage pickup. The only failure is that the pickup and return area for Dollar and other cars is way in the back of the rental lot and is not well marked. The whole area should be reorganized to have all companies facing front and not parallel to each other.

Temple Square with the Christmas lights was beautiful. The missionaries there are helpful and kind. Take in a Tabernacle Choir concert! City Creek shopping center has great food options. Parking at City Creek is convenient and inexpensive (or free with purchase). Gateway shopping center has fun options for food and shopping with great parking. Museums on Temple Square are fun too. Skiing close by. (Visited in the winter)

Avoid early morning travel. Busy! Arrive early and pay close attention to signs when driving; it's a lil crazy now with new construction. Don't be afraid to rent a car off property. Off-property car rentals are FAST. The time you think you'll save renting on-property is lost because those companies are sooo slow. Seriously! If you or someone with whom you're traveling have any difficulty walking, request a wheelchair or the ride service to go to the gate. It's a looong walk!

While visiting Salt Lake City we found a lot of fun and interesting things to see and do. One of the main city attractions is Temple Square, it is very unique and a busy see in SLC. I would also recommend Red Butte Gardens, they were beautiful and show some of the natural beauty of the area. We also enjoyed the downtown, lots of shopping and restaurants. Our favorite meal was at Taqueria 27, really delicious and interesting tacos. We also enjoyed a day in Park City, the adventure Park/slides were fun for the whole family!!

No need to to go 'up * over' the walkway - if you have hand luggage only you can safely cross the lower road to the car rental offices. Convenient garage to refuel when returning a car at the airport. Easy return sequence - took less than 5 minutes.

Quick pick up and return cuts time needed to make your flight. TSA is pretty quick. Airport is small enough to enable fast navigation. Airport was nice. Door 7 and pick up area 7 are in two completely different spots so check with the person you are picking up to clarify. Best to wait in waiting parking area which is off site. They wont let you sit at pick up area for more than a minute or so and will make you drive the loop.

Security lines were long but moved very quickly compared to other airports. Be ready to get your stuff into the bins quickly or you’ll be holding up the line. The rental car signage sucks. One sign inside with an arrow pointing outside. Once you’re outside, you have to play where’s Waldo to find the second sign—across the street. Don’t forget to check the weather forecast and bring a little umbrella. It was a lifesaver for my laptop in my carryon.

The hours were 5 am to midnight. EZ is an 8 minute shuttle ride from the airport so not as convenient as companies that are located at the airport but the shuttle worked out well, no significant waiting times. It was worth it because I found much better rates. If you want to get a room near EZ for the night there is a low cost Airport Inn just around the corner, within easy walking distance. Also some higher priced places such as the Radisson also easy walking distance away. There is not much else around within easy walking distance, no stores or restaurants.

Bring an empty water bottle to fill once inside security while traveling. Remember nuts are easy to pack and great for extra energy. Make sure to do the temple tour downtown, it's free and very interesting. The grounds are gorgeous. Visit the City Library when you just need a break or place to catch your breath. The architecture is beautiful and they have the best little shops and coffee/tea booths outside of the 'book' section. It's very calming and lots of natural light. Sundance ski resort is easy to get to and amazing scenery. The ski lift is open year round. Its a treat to ride up and enjoy the view, then hike or ride back down. The Olympic Park in Park City is very interesting. You can enjoy zip-lining or tubing down the 'ski-jumps', and check out where the snow boarders practice. They have a freestyle show where the ski jumpers show some tricks, and land in a pool. Also there is a ride where you can experience the bobsled.

Overall the airport is easy to navigate. I recommend booking rental cars well in advance because I overheard people saying the few rental car agencies on site were sold out. You may have to wait a while to find the shuttle and then wait for it for off site rental car companies. There was a decent food court once you got past security, with several food options and lots of seating. When going through security, be prepared to take out all electronics and toiletries or they will search your bag. I didn't realize that and ended up having to wait to have my suitcase opened and my toiletries checked.

The trick to getting to know Salt Lake City is understanding how they have named the streets. It all centers around the Temple in the heart of the city, along with the state capitol building. You will find North Temple, South Temple and West Temple. The there is West and East 600 South Street. They are divided by Main Street. There are many great places to eat in the center of town along with wonderful shopping. Benihana and the Blue Iguana Restaurants are tucked away in an alley across W Temple from the Salt Palace. I recommend reservations. If you are looking for Trader Joes, Sprouts or Whole Foods they are all off of 700 E within a few blocks of each other.

SLC is renovating the airport. It will be spectacular when completed. Now, it's just mediocre. However, the people that work in the airport are nice and pleasant to deal with. Our AA agent was great! The Salt Lake area is replete with outdoorsy things to do. You will have to try very hard to be bored. We ski. We get hurt. The health care facilities are great, specifically St. Marks ER. When you leave a city and its airport not known for tourism (Charlotte,NC) and go to a city that is (Salt Lake City) you will notice a stark contrast.

Do remember that advantage rental cars are not on the airport grounds when returning your vehicle. I was so exhausted from hiking all week, I forgot that key piece of info. Do use SLC airport to go to/from Moab, it gives you time during the drive to finalize last minute hiking/biking/guide details so you can maximize your time in Moab. The drive back to SLC is good for sharing the best things about the trip as a family and what you want to include in your trip next time you come. If you do the "grand circle" consider a flight in to SLC airport and a flight out of Vegas. It will save some drive time, but it's more planning ahead of time. Southern Utah was the most beautiful place I have been on this planet!! Do Not miss it!

SLC is a very easy airport to navigate. The PA system for all the airlines is great. I had no problem hearing the announcements from the attendants at the podiums. I would like to see more restaurants on the post security check point side. Terminal A has very little to choose from while you wait. I like that a lot of the car rental businesses are on site. But even the off-site ones have enough vans to get you to their locations seamlessly. Passenger pick up is very easy as well. The waiting lot is easy to find and easy to exit to pick up your passenger.

I was staying in Embassy Suites which was moved from down-town to south-west (built a few years back). They did change the original design of Embassy Suites from large opened middle area and rooms around it, into a standard hotels' layout. Still a good service and really, really great FULL breakfast. Skiing - Brighton is my favorite - least expensive and the least crowded (if you are advanced skier). People are mostly saturated around green lines. Once you get higher, it takes less than a min to get back on the lift. It does not have gondolas or facilities at the tops of the mountains (like Snow Basin does). If you are a sucker for luxury, look elsewhere (Dear Value).
