About Car Rental at Las Vegas Airport

Known as The City of Lights, Las Vegas will dazzle you with its endless abundance of casinos, galleries and epic parks to discover. There truly is something for everyone here, from the world-famous Las Vegas Strip that gives the city its title; ‘The Entertainment Capital of the World’, to plenty of spas, malls, boutiques, and museums for those looking for a unique trip that’s a little more low-key.

The main airport in Las Vegas is the Harry Reid International Airport. Previously known as the ‘McCarren International Airport’, it was renamed recently in February 2021 and both names are still often used, so don’t mistake them for being separate airports. Generally, it is widely recommended that the best way to get around Las Vegas is via car. There are plenty of globally recognised car rental firms located at the airport. Among the agencies offering their market expertise and great deals include Thrifty, Enterprise, and Sixt, but keep an eye out for some more wallet-friendly brands like Budget and Payless Car Rental too as these are just as reputable but often offer much cheaper prices.

Downtown Car Rental in Las Vegas

It’s no secret that Las Vegas can be an expensive trip, so to save money where you can you may want to avoid the extra fees that come with renting a car at the airport. Instead, you can find the same host of big-name brands dotted all over downtown Las Vegas. Many of these can be found in popular places such as on the strip, outside hotels, or near casinos. However, if you plan on splashing the cash whilst living it up in Las Vegas, we recommend keeping an eye out for some of the more independent, local car rental agencies such as LVC Exotic Rentals, as many of these have a large variety of luxury cars and vehicles for you to choose from.

Driving in Las Vegas

Whizzing around the City of Lights is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that you will never forget, but before you get too excited make sure you prepare yourself prior to jumping behind the wheel. As with any new country or area there are certain things you should be aware of to ensure the safety of yourself and others around you. For example, be prepared for lots of visual distractions. This is especially true at night when all the bright lights and flashing colours can become dazzling. Also, do be extra vigilant about pedestrians as there will be a lot of them and many can be unpredictable.

Tips for driving in Las Vegas

Car Rental Agencies in Las Vegas

If you’re looking to rent a car at the airport, all of the agencies are available at the McCarren Rent-A-Car Center, which is actually 3 miles south of the airport. There are no booths at the airport itself, however there are regular shuttle buses that will get you to this Rent-A-Car Center efficiently. It houses ten reputable car rental companies and also has good access to the main strip.

On the other hand, if you’re after car rental somewhere downtown, Hertz has sixteen pickup locations dotted all over the city, and they also provide great information on their website about how to make the most of Las Vegas by car. Regardless of what company you choose, however, you can rest assured knowing that you are guaranteed the highest quality no matter who you go with.

Top Road Trips in Las Vegas

Although the Las Vegas Strip is a must-see, there is so much more to this incredible city than blinding lights and thrilling casinos. Make sure to save a few days for hopping in the car and heading out for a road trip to some of the jaw-dropping places that are on your doorstep in the state of Nevada.

A trip to Las Vegas isn’t complete without a road trip to the world-famous Grand Canyon National Park. In just over two hours you can find yourself on another planet, discovering the incredible natural landscape that has been carved from the red desert rock.

For more natural desert adventures, ensure you set aside the time to visit Hoover Dam and Death Valley too. These two bucket-list essentials are the perfect destination for nature lovers and thrill seekers alike, just don’t forget to pack the sunscreen.

What’s the best area to stay in Las Vegas?
The best area to stay in Las Vegas is arguably the South Strip. It will put you right in the centre of the action as it is within walking distance of almost everything that Las Vegas is known for. But, for a just-as-fun but more budget-friendly option, we recommend staying downtown.

The cheapest time to go to Las Vegas is December (before the Winter holiday season) or January. These times will get you the cheapest accommodation and travel.
What is the best time to go to Las Vegas?
We would recommend going to Las Vegas around the end of April to the start of May. This is when the weather is warm but not humid, the pools are open, but the Spring Break crowds haven’t arrived yet.
Can you get around Las Vegas without a car?
Buses are available in Las Vegas, however they tend to have very particular stops and vary in frequency depending on the day, so if you want flexibility and no long waits or walks to and from bus stops, we would highly recommend renting a car.

at the risk of naming brand names, i'd recommend airbnb for lodging v.s. just booking a hotel if for more than just 1 day. make sure to read reviews and the description and don't settle for less. you can specify a private entrance, a private bath, a whole condo or house, a pool, location, etc. you can find a shared bedroom too for those on a tight budget (but privacy is optimal for us). renting a car can be tedious (the best car, service, price, etc). the name brand rental companies are usually more costly (but not always). i find a company that offers full refunds up to the beginning of the rental. then i book what "i think" is the best price after shopping for coupon rates, etc. then i watch periodically for the same scenario on my booked rental and if i find a rate better by several dollars or more, i consider re-booking with the same refundability and just cancel my previous rental. again, the lesser brand rental companies won't necessarily have the rental you booked. as i said previously, i once rented a compact car and was given an 8 passenger van. more later...

Be sure to bring all reservation paper work with you. Also check with your credit card and auto insurance for car coverage. A lot of pressure at rental counter to purchase extra insurance you may not need. Also look auto over before leaving for dents and scapes , may also take pictures with phone to show damage if any. I have never had a problem with damage to car but it is wise to have proof. Also they like to have you. Pre pay for fuel and then bring back empty, but very very seldom do you bring back a vehicle bone dry on fuel so what is left in tank is your. Loss when you return it.

Ask questions when in doubt, security guards will get you to the right place. Make sure you pay attention to all your belongings. When you rent your vehicle, make sure that you check your gas amount and car, so that you can return everything the same. ALSO make sure you know the Car Rental place's hours so that you do not go when it is closed.

Leave plenty of time when picking up and returning your vehicle. You need to take two shuttle buses to get to and from the airport. Although there seemed to be adequate staffing, both the pick up and return processes moved slowly. And, the exact make and model of car you receive probably won't match what you booked. Ours didn't and we had only two cars to choose from when we arrived at 9:15 AM. Otherwise, we were satisfied with our rental from Fox on this occasion. Get out and see Las Vegas and the surrounding sights. Not everything is inside a casino! Enjoy!

Holiday Cars is the best deal to rent from. I have referred someone else to Holiday Cars and they got a better deal. If your rental car comes from a company in the rental car center you only have to take 1 shuttle bus. There are off site rental car companies but they may not have the best deal. You have to ride a second shuttle bus to the off site rental car companies. I have always returned the car with the same fuel level (usually full) which cost less than the "prepaid" fuel they try and sell you as an add on.

If indeed you are new at renting in Vegas, you will find that the centralized pick for most rental cars is very friendly and easy to get to and get out of as well as return. Once you pick up your luggage, there is bus transport to the rental center which makes for easy pickup of your car. Make sure you have all the documents stated in you rental agreement and if needed buy rental insurance should your own insurance not cover any damages. Double check with your carrier! Carefully note any damages to the vehicle you receive prior to leaving the terminal lot. I find it cheaper to buy gas off site prior tp returning the car. Advantage wanted eleven dollars a gallon if they had to ill it upon return. ($11.00) And just a sidenote: If you have never driven in a city like Vegas make sure you stay alert and always drive as if your life was important. I am not sure where everyone is going but they love to toot.

*Always print your itinerary, even if it is on your phone. Double check before you leave the house that you have keys, wallet, phone, passport/identification, any documents for travel all in a carryon bag. *Utilize good packing skills- prepare each outfit for the day, have one spare and one nice outfit. Try to coordinate all your clothes to two pairs of shoes- one practical and one nice. Don't be afraid to use laundry services, and remember if you forget something: There is always a Wal-Mart for that. :) *Hydrate before traveling, make sure you have any medications you need. If you feel sick, take a mask. Don't risk germs, especially if you are headed to vacation. And frankly, no one really cares what you look like on the plane. *Wear easily removable shoes for security and comfortable clothes to fly in. If you don't have a neck pillow, a rolled up sweatshirt will do the trick in a pinch. *Leave a some extra room in your bags for your purchases while you are on vacation. OR be prepared to ship things home to yourself. I often bring back my purchases and mail home my clothes- because I have plenty of clothes at home. It keeps me from dealing with too much luggage, and it's usually a simple stop at the USPS, UPS or FedEx locations. And it often costs me less than checking or carrying on my luggage. *Research where you are going. Look for things that interest you. You may find a fun event or concert, a museum exhibit, a carnival or who knows what! Enjoy!!

The Las Vegas airport recently changed to require check-in 45 minutes before your flight. It used to be 30 minutes. I found this out the hard way. I had a situation where on-line check-in was not allowed. Then they moved me to the special services line, but there was no one attending that counter. After an additional 10 minute wait with no one showing up, they moved me back to the normal line. By that time it was 43 minutes before my flight so they would not check me in. I missed the flight and had to overnight at the airport and fly stand-by the next morning. Do as they recommend and arrive 2 hours before your flight.

SIXT is actually not in the car rental center, they are just a half block away. What this means is that you take the shuttle from the airport to the rental center then a shuttle from the rental center to SIXT. That's probably why their cars were cheaper. While I was annoyed at the idea at first, it was actually very fast and they run shuttles about every 5 minutes so overall, it wasn't a big deal and I liked the savings. So there's that...

The best travel tips I feel was very helpful to me is soon as you know you are traveling checking early for flights and car rental. This way booking early it's all done and already paid for and even get better deals compared to waiting last minute and paying more than you intended. Then you do your home work Google online the destination you're going to and put in "things to do" all kinds of fun things will show up than you can pick and choose what you want to do and add it in your itinerary. Then your vacation is all set and now you can sit back relax and have fun.

Holiday cars provided the best value for a rental car at LAS. We received a diesel VW Jetta - and were very impressed with the MPG. We hardly had to add much gas during the week that we had the vehicle. The only suggestion I would have would be to provide customers with a paper map on how best to exit the city from the rental location. Not everyone is skilled with a smart phone or has one adequately charged. A basic map, or basic directions to get to the interstate would have saved us lots of time and trouble as we were not familiar with the city.

The juxtaposition between Las Vegas and it's magnificent hotel structures that are always busy with fun and the Silence of the Zion National Park canyons, made a big impact on our hearts. Because you are not allowed to drive in the National Park, we only used One tank of gas from Las Vegas to Springdale and back. What a bargain that was! Head to Rosita's in Springdale, the newest Tex Mex place nestled in an apple orchard. Their food is authentic and delicious. You can have alcohol there, beer is on tap and margarita's are their own mix. If you want a real treat, take the Ranger Shuttle Bus 90 minute tour offered in Zion National Park daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Sign up at the Visitor's Center at the first Shuttle stop. We went on a rainy day and it was interesting and fun to see some "secret" spots in the park shared by our Ranger. You really must stop at the Bakery at the Bumbleberry Inn and have a bumble berry pie hole....or 6. They are sweet and delicious. I had to take a dozen home! Las Vegas we will use Holiday Cars again when we fly back. First rate service.

The las vegas airport is nice and clean. One thing I would suggest when you travel is to make sure you are over 25 or they will charge you more. For families traveling with a car seat, be sure to order a car seat stroller from Amazon or the like. Beats having to lug a heavy car seat around if using it on board. If you can afford it, purchase a lounge pass and relax in a quiet and unhurried environment. It really relieves the stress from being in overcrowded gate areas. Consider Priority Pass although it can be expensive if you don't find discounts. Perhaps the best travel tip I can recommend is applying for TSA Precheck. It is the best $85 investment for travelers. You are vetted ahead of time and once approved, you can avoid removing your shoes and belt, and removing your laptop from your carry on at security check. You also go through an express lane that will cut down time immeasurably. Lastly, avoid renting from Avis. The only way to send a signal to companies who provide dreadfully bad service is to hit them at their profit margin. If they are smart, they will fire the CEO, bring someone new, and immediately work toward improving service and their product. Customers are smart and we do not buy into slick ads. We quickly become loyal to good businesses and avoid bad ones... and take the time to warn other customers about the bad ones. Repeat: Avoid Avis.

The most important tip is to find your car in Holiday cars! You can find the best deals on line. Definitely, having a car in Vegas gives you the opportunity of visiting a large number of places in less time. I would advise to look for the parking spots that are free, because some hotels charge 7 bucks or more for an hour. However, there are some places free of charge, where you can park and walk to several places from there. Having a car also gives you the plus of visiting the two outlet malls near Vegas. If you have enough time take a trip out to Hoover Damn! Hertz rent a car is VERY AFFORDABLE, and was one of my best investment while there. I will be renting from them in the future.

A great place to rest and relax away from home. Lots of golf courses to choose from, and entertainment galore. When you land at the airport, make sure you ask which terminal you are deplaning at, and which terminal your baggage will be taken. I went to Baggage Claim at terminal 1, and my luggage went to baggage claim at Terminal 3. The trams can be confusing if you are not familiar with the airport.

Always plan your trip when driving. Know your route before getting in the vehicle. When you are unsure where you are going, Don't be embarrassed to ask!! Practically everyone is willing to help you out. Always follow directions that use streets names and freeway designation numbers (not names) and exit numbers. Never use points of interest. They always change.

I go to Las Vegas quite often. But if you were a tourist. I would suggest getting on groupon to buy discounted meals and show tickets and other attractions such as the Grand Canyon. Tix4tonite is also a good place to get up to 50% off on show tickets. Stay away from buffets. Are you really going to get your money's worth at one. Kahunaville Hawaiian restaurant at Treasure Island is one of my favorites. Normally for a price of $34 to $45 on groupon I get dinner for two which includes an entree, salad and drink .

The old part of Vegas on Fremont is far more interesting and colorful than the "new" Strip area. However, many of the hotels on the Strip are a must to see, including the Bellagio, Caesar's Palace, and even Circus Circus if you want some old-fashioned entertainment. We ate at an awesome brewery/restaurant called Chicago inside one of the old casinos on Fremont (above the Hugo restaurant). Amazing food and service. The bus is definitely a good way to see the city and very reasonably priced, but don't use it if you're in a hurry. Overall, we had a nice time.
