In 2014 the name of the airport changed from Madrid-Barajas to Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas, a tribute to a former Spanish president who died in 2014. It’s the biggest international airport of Spain and is also used for military operations. More than 53 million passengers arrived on- or departed from the airport in 2017. Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas is located 7.5 miles / 12 km northeast of downtown Madrid.
