OAK is compact and has easy access to the whole Bay Area. In terms of delays, OAK is much better than SFO; no delays for early morning at OAK. It's worthwhile to consider rush hour traffic on the 880 in the afternoon, say after 4:30 when returning.

I my experience, the best time to book a rental car is 1-2 weeks before. Look up Google map on your routes before pickup the car. And do the same before return. Check google map on gas station near by return point so that you can get full tank of gas when return car.

Oakland airport is small and very easy to get around. Check in is a breeze with lots of ‘check in machines’ and the airline employees seem to be waiting to help you. The TSA security is quick - but have your things ready. I wear slip on shoes, not a lot of jewelry, my liquids are already in a plastic bag, my iPad is easy to slide out. Arriving at OAK: luggage is waiting for you downstairs, and you can step outside to the car rental shuttle, taxi or your own ride. You gotta love it!

Do not overpack, you would be surprised how little you really need. Most hotels or if you’re staying with family have a lot of the essentials that you need. When you pack a lot of clothes it actually makes traveling more frustrating. For one, you will need to move that heavy luggage or multiple bags around a lot, second, it takes more time on making a decision on what to wear and at the end of the trip you’re re-packing all the clothes you didn’t wear!

Pick up your car on time. Return your car on time. Fill up your car on your own before returning. Drive safely so no damage occurs to the car. Park in lighted areas to avoid break-ins and theft. Don't pick up hitch-hikers unless they are drop down gorgeous. Don't exceed your credit card limit when you place the car on it. Happy travels

The airport was quite good. Security went relatively quickly, which was nice. I did notice that there were not enough female TSA agents to “pat” the girls down so that caused the line I was in to stack up a little, but nothing outrageous. I loved the living wall there so I admired the plants while I waited my turn. I also loved the cool vending machines, especially the Benefit Cosmetics. So charming. I guess my only criticism would be that the restrooms could use more frequent attention. Otherwise, it really had everything you needed.

OAK is a big airport hence account for additional time in your transit. It takes at least 15 minutes to get to the rental car center. The driving around the city is a little rash, so have insurance. Some of the rental companies are not open 24/7, please check your contract before proceeding. There is tolls on the freeway but only while going to SF city. Getting out of the city has no tolls on either bay bridge or the golden gate bridge.

Whenever you travel into or out of the Oakland or SFO airports be aware of the time you are arriving or leaving the airport. If you are close to rush hour or going the wrong direction on the Weekend you are going to be stuck in traffic for a while.

Leave space in bag for personal belongings, as you have to empty all pockets while going through custom check. Be prepared to remove belts & shoes too. Ask for list of eateries at different Gates. Packed food & drink allowed on board. Not to be at appointed gate too early before boarding time as seats are limited. Many electrical sockets for charging, so charger along. But trolleys are hard to find.

The counter staff was very helpful and clearly explained all of the important information that we needed for the trip. The shuttle bus driver was friendly and welcoming.

Make sure to give yourself plenty of time to get from shuttle to airport. Have all you documentation ready when getting to the counter. Use your insurance coverage through a reputable bank/credit card company. Don't always prepay gas, sometimes cheaper to buy locally. Check the gas prices before committing to prepaid gas.

Always use your map apps when traveling around and through Oakland airport. It is busy. Highway 880 the main road traveling North and South is under construction causing slowdowns and some confusion as to what exits off the highway are maneuverable.

Be early to everything. It is taking a lot longer at TSA. Their secondary checks will cause you to miss a flight. Wear socks!! Use alternative airports when possible. Sometimes they are cheaper when you factor in rental/ Uber/ Lyft/taxi costs.

OAK has very short TSA lines and enough staff to keep on top of lines. Unlike SFO, Oakland airport does not get fogged in. I have experienced very few delays, cancellations or rerouting when flying into or out of OAK. Ground transport is quite good at OAK, particularly since the BART connector has been completed. Expansion of the cell waiting lot and more frequent buses to rental lot have made driving in and out of OAK a breeze. Good choice of restaurants in both terminals! Strong coffee is always available at OAK.

Book with Fox. The check-in lady was friendly & helpful. The car was in good condition & ran well. The return in Oakland was easy. The lady that greeted us & checked the car in when we returned it was very friendly. We had a successful & excellent experience.

Shuttle service from the car rental pick up/ drop off is prompt. No matter what time of the year get to the airport a good 15 minutes on top of the recommended time suggested by the Oakland Airport. This is a busy airport with many conveniences yet with lots of foot traffic.

Visit Oakland's wonderful parks up in the hills, and drive along Skyline Boulevard for some of the best views of the Bay Area. Also, take a stroll around Lake Merritt and relax under the willow trees surrounding it.

Knowing where you are traveling to and which way to go is important. I also visited other areas in the Bay area: Vacaville, San Jose, and Santa Clara, California.

The traffic is a headache at times, but there is so much to do. My sister and I went to San Francisco which is near by. Oakland has many fun activities and it is conveniently located to other cities that also have many fun activities to partake in. ENJOY!

The vehicles from Fox Car Rental have fast Trak... If you will be traveling around the Bay Area, try to stay ahead of congestive traffic. 880 can have heavy traffic around 4 pm. 580 is bad after 4 pm going towards Richmond. Traffic was good headed towards San Francisco befor 5 pm. Good Luck.

The airport and car rental center is not a problem to get into or out of those locations. But the city of Oakland makes me want to stay clear of it and not to stay in the city because of reviews and crime etc.

Oakland itself seemed dirty and not very safe. We didn't spend much time there, just flew into airport. Most of the vacation was spent seeing the Redwoods, coastal area, and San Fransisco.
